    Back to Gloria

    Ahem. As we were saying...

I'll agree with many of the others and vote for Gloria's "Turn the Beat Around" as one of the worst remakes. I'm sure there are many much worse, but few as high profile as that one was. Gloria just sounds way too uptight to sing that song, like she said "I'll sing this the way Anne Murray would." None of the pure joy that Vicki Sue expressed so effortlessly. Side note: where the heck is that Vicki Sue hits CD that was supposedly being put together after her death? Whoever now controls the masters from RCA's disco days ought to be ashamed. In addition to Vicki, I'd love to see CD's for Faith Hope & Charity, Choice Four ("Come Down TO Earth"), later Peter Brown ("Baby Gets High"), Cory Daye's "Cory and Me" LP, Baciotti, Buffalo Smoke, and I don't know how many others.

Oh, and I really didn't care for the usually wonderful Hannah Jones's rackety take on "Was That All It Was."

The owner of the biggest music radio in France, NRJ, is also the owner of the Rugby french champion, the "Stade Français".
This man, Max Guazzini, has had the fantastic idea to create a music group called "hermes House band" with players of the team.

They made two abominable covers of disco songs : in 1998 they covered "I will survive", that was the french soccer team anthem.

Then They covered "Can't take my eyes off you".

Their last "hit" is a cover of Opus' "Live is life", which is unlistenable.

Listen to those songs, there are really good outsiders for the title of worst disco remake.

Geez, I only meant that born2disco is a very witty and quite amusing poster. His totally original emoticons have cracked me up!!! (especially the "violin" after a particulary weepy post!!!)

Love his snarky sense of humor. That's all.

No offense to anyone else. I'm a lover not a fighter. Unless provoked. :D

Well there's countless number of shitty-arse modern remakes of disco songs which really drive me insane. Here's a list of ones off the top of my head:

Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way 1987 (I don't care much for this version at all. BTW they really remind me of Bronski Beat too. Anyhow whilst there's American Idol, there's also Australian Idol over here which the judges are Mark Holden, Marcia Hines and Dicko. Anyhow they are HARD critics and one nice young lady sang "Don't Leave Me This Way" and she did an EXCELLENT job at sounding close to Thelma's voice which she got fantastic ratings and she hasn't been singing that long. Now let's see what happens when the lead singer of the Communards audition for Aussie Idol, put it this way he would not make it past the auditions, they'd most likely have a laugh and tell him to piss off      . Goes to show that you don't have to be talented to rake in the cash. Lastly the clip is annoying too especially that balled bloke with the circular sunnies and moustache.)

CDB - Let's Groove 1996 (This group is some typical girl-groped Australian boyband who did an absolute talentless :x shitty  version of EWF's "Let's Groove" which their version sounded very similar but their voices were shithouse compared to EWF and the video clip is boring and nothing compared to the fantastic EWF clip that has the cool video effects)

Cake - I Will Survive [late 90s] (They did the absolute WORST version of "I Will Survive" which the clip is some bloke in some mini one seater truck driving down singing with a crap voice. This song sucks plumbers crack  !!!!!!)

Hail The Sunshine [new version] (Some modern pop/techno group did a bloody terrible remake of 5th Dimension's 1969 hit "Hail The Sunshine". 5th Dimension's version was fantastic, this new version sucks plumbers crack! Main reason is this HORRIBLE choppy looping of the lyric "hail" which it goes "hail...hail...hail...hail...etc" which is absolute shithouse editing :x  !!! Fair dinkum, even I can do better sound loops than they can using just Goldwave and I've had no DJ mixing experience whatsoever  !!! Everytime I hear this new version at work on radio I always sing "hail where the sun don't shine" or "hail the moonshine". Talk about lack of talent, whoever the group is whom did this disasterous remake, they absolutely killed a great 5th Dimension hit :( !!!)

N-Trance - Stayin' Alive (Fair crack of the whip, does some 90's group really have to do a tasteless rap version of this song? Well these blokes did and when I heard this song back in 1995 when doing rolleskating as a high school sport I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED it  :x !!!!! If anyone hates "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees (which I don't) then they'll hate this song 100 times more!!!)

Frank Bennett - Let's Make Lots Of Money (This Australian bloke did a lousy Frank Sinatra style cocktail lounge version of a Petshop Boys hit "Let's Make Lots Of Money" which I don't care much for at all. And the clip is at some Aussie casino. It would be about as entertaining as watching some middle aged bargearse female yobbo playing the pokies at some RSL or leagues club while smoking a ciggy and swearing and cursing everytime she loses money.)

Kym Mazelle - Young Hearts Run Free 1996 (Yet another typical techno remake of a 70s disco song. What really makes it bad is the fact it's a theme to movie "Romeo & Juliet" starring Leonardo De Crappants. Watched the movie once, it sucked crusty **** because all the scripting is straight from the original Shakespeare play which don't at ALL fit with the modern times this movie is suppose to be set in. They could have easily used todays slang and kept the storyline the same but they didn't, they must have been on a tight budget I guess  . Honestly I rather watch Richie Benaud commentate cricket than watch this movie. Also I hate Leonardo he simply just gives me the shits    !!! And the song was rather tasteless too.)

Moulin Rouge - Lady Marmalade (Honestly it doesn't matter how hot the girls look in the clip, they killed a great Labelle hit by making it sound pop-oriented and commercial. Therefore I give this song the thumbs down.)

Well those are some I can think of off the top of my head.

    hi,
Quinny mentioned somewhere on this topic that covers of old Disco songs bring those old music to new generation. True in some way,
but the reason behind is obvious - let's make some sure money!
And if new generations should learn about this songs- than I don't see any argumented reason why THE ORIGINALS should't be played instead of this eat-**** covers, made by adolescent wannabe singers!

Funky I disagree with U on the Cake's version of I will survive. I think they didn't do it seriously. the video clip was pretty funny.

I don't like this track but it's a cover that doesn't upset me.

They sound similar because Jimmy Sommerville was lead singer for both. He started Communards after leaving Bronski Beat. :)

What about the 1991 remix of "Keep On Dancing" by Garys Gang? It is featured on Kenny Dopes Disco Heat much to my dismay. 5 years ago, I was 14 and a friend of my mothers sent a tape with the original 12'' on it, and Slicks "Space Bass" and Edwin Starrs "Happy Radio". The tape melted in the sun and I'll never have that recipe again..until I can find it in Australia. Why did he put this on there? Its tacky!!
