If you think brazilian music is only "samba" or "bossa nova"... you're quite wrong! Check it out (if possible to you)some of the following songs. I think that some of it are available in Audiagalaxy.

Banda Black Rio - Miss Cherryl (this song

was made in honor of Cherryl Lynn - on tour in Brazil by that time)

Tim Maia - Racional Culture (awesome funky)

Tim Maia - Descobridor dos Sete Mares (horn driven funk)

Tim Maia - Sossego (mid-tempo horn driven funk)

Tim Maia - Vale Tudo (Disco, disco!!!)

Gerson "King" Combo - Mandamentos Black (quite funky - a James Brown "wannabe")

And many more. I'll post more in the future. I hope you enjoy.

    Peace,

    Blaxman

Your answer is not. The tracks listed in my post are very similar to american disco. Banda Black Rio and Tim Maia are looks like Earth, wind and Fire/Kool & the Gang songs. I like azimuth too and... hey!!! I'm going right now check your song. I have some song

that I write with a friend (now living in london), it's instrumental minimalist funk.

    (Drums,bass,guitar and some samples)

    Peace,

    Blaxman

P.S. If you can, hear the listed songs. It's a must!!

    Hello Blaxman!

These artists you mentioned where 70's soul artists. As the time passed they were respected as musicians and had credibility.

But there were others who were not the case: we also had our disco stars: female singers/groups like Lady Zu and Frenetica... and many others, too efemeral to mention who were slashed by the media of the time as "pop overnight passing sillyness" (they were indeed).

Most of the good soul bands Blaxman mention had their 70's albums released on CD for the first time in 2001.

    Were are you from Blaxman???

I.m not too familiar with Brazilian music, but whatever I've heard, it is good---not to say that all of it is, but what I've heard.

By the way, the Chocolat's first album is very Brazilian sound oriented and it's correctly titled "Brazilia Carnival". The Chocolat's is an European group made up, I guess, of Spaniards, Cubans, and even Brazilians---I guess. I don't know much this group's history but I like their sound a lot.

    To Fantomas:

Well... the song listed in this post are not typical (regular) brazilian songs, but american style songs (with "musical accent" of course). However, no "carnivals" or no latin rythms are present on it. Some of it has lyrics in english (as seen on the title) and others in portuguese naturally.

Again, I recommend. Listen. They are worthy.

    Thanx and peace,

I'd like to add also, in my opinion, a good brazilian funk (in part disco oriented)lp i own..it's a 1977 same album by Uniao Black. Among the track i prefer Geracao Black, Black Rio and Laco Negro.

    Yeaahhh, coolcut!!!

Do you know Uniao Black!! Awesome band, the track Black Rio rocks. Great instrumental track. It's a very obscure band even in Brazil where the Banda Black Rio is much more famous and recently was reactivated by the son of its late bandleader.

Brazil also contributed the singer Gretchen. This woman put out euro-flavoured disco tracks "Freal le Boom Boom" and "Me Gusta Le Cha Cha" and sounded just like she looked like, a mating of Charo and Max von Sudow.

Brazilian 60s/70s jazz/funk seems to be very sought-after in my town. There's a shop here that sells these records for huge sums of money; i.e. $100 - $400 Cnd per LP.

Thanks for your response Paulo, here in POA me and more six friends created a black music collectors club called "Senhores do

Groove" ("Lords Of The Groove" in english and we made a couple of meetings and record trades between us time by time.

I got me an album made by "The Vamps". The cover is very spooky. I thought it was a metal group. It has a couple of songs worth to listen.

During the seventies and eighties I listened to Rita Lee, Deodato, Peninha, and my favorite Xuxa, whatever happened to her.

Also Two Man Sound had an infectious tune called "Disco Samba", a potpourri of well-known brazilian songs.

    Hi Guille,

I dont know The Vamps so much, Rita Lee it's Ok, Deodato outstanding, Peninha so-so, but Xuxa?!? You must be kidding!!!

She's not really a singer!! She's a children entertainer. Her music it´s a kind of child's play. I dont know if you know it?

About Two Man Sound. I'll take more info about it.OK?

    Peace,

Of course I was kidding about Xuxa. She is OK as a barbie doll with no brains, but that's it. Besides, I don't think she is really blonde.

Two Man Sound is not a Brazilian group. They were from Holland. They recorded songs in portuguese using some of the well-known carnaval anthems.

I have to add some more names to my list: Sergio Mendes, Gal Costa, Roberto Carlos, etc. They didn't make disco or anything, but they have some nice pop tunes. I don't think there was somebody who represented disco as an artist in Brazil. It might be because of the ever-present machismo in Latin America.

You cant imagine my relieve(about Xuxa). You're right!

About the others artists you're right again.

About the disco artists....well, we have some of them, they aren't essencially disco artists because in Brazil the "musical accent" is quite strong, but many of them made some discoish acts, such as:

    Lady Zu (Brazilian disco Queen)

    Tim Maia (brazilian disco King)

Deodato (As producer for Kool & the Gang)

    Fernanda Abreu

    Freneticas (A female disco group)

and other minor acts with local hits I cant remember right now. I'll post it in the future.

Thanxs for your response. Good talk here.

    Peace,

    Blaxman

I remember Rita Lee's "Lanzaperfume" was a disco hit in Argentina back in the day. Hello Brazil!

About Two Man Sound's "Disco Samba", I have a sad story to tell. This "song" I have learned to hate because all Argentine DJs put it on wedding parties. It's always in the middle of the party, something called "Carnaval carioca" and it goes like this: someone hands the guests masks, silbatos and serpentinas (I don't know how it's said in English), "Disco Samba" is on in its entirety, and suddenly all people act like they're really happy. You Brazilians know we in Argentina are a bit melancholic, so by this time one have to drink a lot to put himself "in the mood" or wait seated until this overexcited mood stops.

Sorry, doesn't have anything to do with music, but I wanted to tell it because I know you Brazilians will find it fun.

    See you in Corea!
