I've been registered on this forum for a while but rarely post - partly because I find it pretty unresponsive compared with other forums. Maybe there just aren't enough users.... hence this call to arms...But yeah.... often it's days before I receive a reply to a post, if at all... *shrugs*
Also there's a pretty intimidating crowd of "old-skoolers" who make us young'ns (i'm 30 :o ) feel a bit stoopit coz we weren't around the first time around.... but I swear my mother blasted her belly with Donna Summer when I was in the womb.....

born2disco,
The fact that you took some time to write down your thoughts is important as it helps me, the moderators and everyone else be more responsive. Normally we don't know how others feel about certain htings cause they choose not to say anything.
You make some valid points and admittedly there is room for improvement. That being said please don't take the lack of a speedy response to your post as a sign of disinterest by others. In the case of song IDs it is merely that many are actually going through their record or CD collections trying to check for you. It's happened to me when I see a request or topic and feel I might have something to contribute, but need to confirm my info. EXAMPLE: when I get home later to actually check my records...
Occasionally there are posts that we ALL make that goes nowhere or takes a while to garner a response. Just look at the topic objectively and see if could have been written a different way... or even respond yourself to bring the post back in the limelight. As much as I pay attention I do miss topics. A good and descriptive SUBJECT line makes a world of difference so avoid subject lines such as "Help Me" or "What Do You Like?."
On the issue of old schoolers making newbies feel stupid or the like I must say that we are actually a very understanding group and have welcomed many newbies and their requests. Forum members actually enjoy having new faces and converts to Disco and do quite a bit to make everyone feel welcome. Many here have gone out of their way to help newer posters develop playlists, locate similar records and even offered free items to have mailed to them. There can be a slight weeding out process going on, but as in everday life if you can show that you are truly interested in the music and the topic at hand and have some conviction you'll be fine.
Just keep posting and let others get a feel for you and the kind of person, kinds of music you like... and everything will come together. So stick around and we will do our best to be more responsive

bumblebee,
Glad to have you in our little community.
As for a list of Disco samples used in House songs, that is something that I hope to add to the site a little later on. Just working out the logistics of it all so keep tuned. Perhaps after the New Years. Enjoy your time with us.

I've enjoyed the forum for a long time and have only put off registering because...well, I don't know why! Anyway, I'm in now thanks to Bernie's gentle hint and look forward to participating. Thanks to all the regular posters for everything I've learned from them. And of course, thanks to Bernie for hosting my favorite disco website.

hi everyone,
i just want to respond to what born2disco had written.
that at the age of 30 he considers himself a youngin' compared to older people who have lived their young adult lives in the disco scene. that maybe correct but i feel that if you love a certain type of music or sound then it really doesn't matter how old you really are. i myself just turned 31 yesterday but consider myself a veteran when it comes to disco music, granted i dont know every singer to every song but who does. thats what this great site is for, for the few times you dont know a song's artist theres always someone here who does. so if your out there browsing this site dont be afraid to join us, we can only help you with what your trying to find out. and im sure there will be answers to questions that youll know that someone else is trying to find out. thats it for now, just my 2 cents.

Hey Bernie,
just thought of this... how about seperating this thread from the "Discuss Disco Music" in order to create a kind of "Welcome/Introduce yourself to other DM members" subforum??
Some of the lurkers may have problems actually deciding where to start posting - this could solve their problem.
I believe that K-Bee's suggestion will definitely work...
I second that.... :)
K-Bee,
It's funny you mention that. There was such a section called "Introduce Yourself" and it was up for quite some time, but only marginally used. I figure it's best for all new members to simply follow existing topics and get a feel for what types of conversations and topics work and which don't. They'll feel right at home in no time!

That is funny. I don't think K-Bee and efunk were around when you had the "Introduce Yourself" page. It barely got touched.Originally Written by Bernie
Well I was not around when you had that thing here at DM.
Just wanted to suggest a sub-forum like that since it seems to be working very well on other boards but if you already tried it here without much luck I guess we should just stick to the way things are.
hmm...
this shall be my second posting.
first of all, hello *waving*. i'm jaime from alaska, i'm a 17 year old senior in highschool :D. i love all types of music, although it's pretty difficult in alaska to become "cultured", per se, in a specific genre. there isn't much of any musical scene up here, whatsoever. sure, there are a few local bands who do covers and write one or two of their own songs, but they're usually angsty teen garage bands and the like. i love the beat of disco; my father introduced me to disco and 70s funk when i visited him a few summers ago and i've been addicted ever since.
can anyone recommend a good place for me to start as far as collecting disco tunes?
Jaime,
Welcome to our little spot on the web. You may well be our first member from Alaska!
As for collecting Disco music, that's fairly easy as there are lots of compilations out there. Best thing to do is start a new topic telling us some of the songs you do like so we can get an idea of your tastes and then we'll recommend others like it.
As a primer, you may want to check out the Top 500 Disco Songs Charts. While they are not perfect, they are a good starting point.

efunk..![]()
Hi everyone :P
I'm new to the site. I was a little kid when disco was at its prime, but I used to sneak into the living room back in the day and put on my father's HUGE headphones and listen to KISS 108 here in Boston (they played disco all day/night).
I'm 32 now and I still listen to it. Most of the music I listened to were mostly the songs played on the radio (remember now I was 8 in 1979 and wasn't allowed at the clubs LOL) so I remember Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Martha Wash, Sylvester, The Village People (ick), etc etc...
Now that I'm older I met up with somebody online that has tons of old disco songs that I'm now getting into, plus Deep House too. Every day I disco in my car, I especially play "lovin is really my game" and my kids just roll their eyes at me LOL![]()
Maria,
Glad you joined up with us. It's nice having you and we look forward to talking Disco with you.
As for the kids rolling their eyes, don't worry about it. It won't be long before you find out that they are borrowing your Disco CDs without telling you! Or, they find out the origins of all those samples in today's music!
Good choice on "Lovin' Is Really my game" by Brainstorm as it is a great song. Enjoy the site!

Hello everybody,
I am one of the frightening oldschoolers here.... :D
I am a fan of this site since its beginning (I think it was about 6-7 years ago! Bernie knows it well).
This forum is a very educative meeting point, with people with enormous knowledge in the field and very friendly attitude to everybody. Not only the seniors but even the juniors!
Yes, there are many other forums but I sincerely think that this is the most disco-oriented around. Of course, posting here requires to stay to the topic, id. disco.
I noticed that many of the youngsters post about post-disco music (mostly house or contemporary tracks). Of course there are other forums that are more apt than this to answer house or techno questions.
I mostly appreciate the "musical" side of the forum, but the forum is ok even for the "social and cultural" aspects of disco.
I grew up with disco as the soundtrack to my adolescence's days and this is the reason why I will always be "disco", even when 80 (hope to get there in health!), but nowdays that disco is just a remember thing I am very happy when I get in touch with anyone who like it or just shows some interest in it.
I'm sure the feelings of all the seniors here are the same than mine towards any newcomer... friendship and cordiality.
We are not here to frighten anyone!
I guess I'm one of those "youngsters" you speak about.
I went to Studio 54 last year because when I was a little girl I remember how everybody made such a big deal about it. Needless to say Studio 54 now sucks LOL but I just wanted to at least say that damn I've been there LOL for those of you that haven't gone... save your money and go to Culture Club for old school hip hop, 80's music and disco.
Giovanni,
Thank you! You are definitely one of the honorary "old timers" here :-) In fact I think you were amongst the first people to send me an e-mail way back in 1996 when DiscoMusic.com was then known as Bernie's Disco Music Page. Who says my memory is fading with age?! All I know is that I'll be there with you at 80 playing Disco music real LOUD.

My God, was it you I emailed waaay back when asking about getting my hands on Sister Sledge "Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me"? I had said I couldn't find it anywhere and you told me it was out there on their Best Of CD. I had never bought it cause online that song was never shown in the track listings.
Some time later I emailed you again about Disco-Tex and you warned me about the "Get Dancin'" CD having lousy sound quality with faux audience effects and all the songs running together.
Geez, if it wasn't you then I am really hallucinating. And I haven't had any of that Gallery punch in almost 30 years! :D
Well --- Hi again, boss. UFB.
Well, im fairly new to Disco, and fairly new to the world at that, because i am only 15 years old. I absolutely LOVE 8) disco music, i cant really remember how i got turned on to it, but that was a while ago.I live in Wyoming, its the least populated state of the US, so we dont get much of anything here, its pretty empty. I have a fairly good collection of disco music, and am still building it. I transformed my room to be a shadow of Studio 54, but still want(need) more. This is a great site, and hope to become a regular member of it, but because i am only 15, born after disco supposedly died, im still a little shakey on the disco stuff, im pretty good at knowing what it being talked about, but not too good. I guess thats enought about me, so i'm done now. Talk to you all later! ~Nab
