OK, dear members,
all those that want me to spend a good night, full of dreams of Candi,
please answer The "House of Love" LP of Candi Staton.
Thanx everybody
being a dj and new to the business I don't have that many disco records. About every month I get about 10-15 new disco records to my collection. I only buy classic disco records! so I guess that makes me a retro dj. I try to get as many disconet records as possible because I just love that remix service. In any event I was wondering what is the essential disco record a dj must have.

Do you really think there's such a thing? Whatever title anybody recommends is going to turn as many people off, as it will on. 'Classics' can become boring, too.
You'd be better off finding your essential disco record - the one which gets the best reaction everytime you play it, or stick to the TV-advertised, cheesy party pleasers - 'Car Wash', 'Lady Marmalade', etc.
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?
I used to have a lot but here's two:
For one club, I had to have "Love Is The Message" by MFSB.
For the other club, it was Voyage, either the 'East to West' lp or "Souvenirs".
If you pick up the "Philadelphia Classics" vinyl or CD you'll have that MFSB sound covered pretty well.
Actually the comment that Forrrce made was right on the money.... I find that most new peeps going to these small bars w/ a disco enjoy listening to a combination of stuff (In California)Originally Written by mixtape
See if you can find these songs w/ Labels in parenthesis followed by year of release:
Fatback - Backstrokin' (Spring) (81)
One Nation Under A Groove - Funkadelic (Warner Bros) (LP Version) 78
Ohio Players - Love Rollercoaster (Mercury) (76)
Chaka Khan - I'm Every Woman (Warner Bros) 78
Evelyn "Champagne" King - Shame (RCA) 78
Foxy - Get Off (TK) 78
Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper (Island) (81)
Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love (Sire) (82)
Brick - Dazz (Bang) (76)
Cheryl Lynn - Got To Be Real (Columbia) 78
I think the regular forum members are probably vomiting right now... but, what can I say.. these songs work![]()
No reason to vomit efunk...these are all good tracks that should do well on the dancefloor (unless you're playing for a crowd of california surfer dudes. I that case you might wanna bring some Blink 182 instead  )
Here are some suggestions I have for you, Mixtape.
I am a very devoted Salsoul fan. The music from that label (a LOT of it) is timeless as well as priceless. For starters I think the following Salsoul tunes are essential:
"Love Sensation"-Loleatta Holloway
"The Beat Goes On"-Ripple
"I Got My Mind Made Up"-Instant Funk
"Let No Man Put Asunder" (1983 Shep Pettibone mix)-First Choice
I don't think there is anything wrong with the "Top 40" disco because in reality, the average music listener past 25 years old will know many of those songs. I would try to look for extended versions of those songs, either from LP or on 12".
"Don't Leave Me This Way"-Thelma Houston (5:42)
"I Want Your Love"-Chic (6:46)
"On The Radio"-Donna Summer (7:33)-PROMO 12" version
"Come To Me"-France Joli (9:46)
The Rinder&Lewis production HOT DISCO NIGHT by Sweet Potato Pie is the one if you got to single out something. This is a poly-rhythm track upon which you can build all sorts of soundscapes and besides, it's a respected cult cut.
Anything on Salsoul is generally essential.
Others I use a lot are:
Martin Circus : Disco Circus
Pointer Sisters : Happiness
T-Connection : At Midnight
Jimmy Bo' Horne : Spank
Rotary Connection : Black Gold Of the Sun
BT Express : Funk Theory
Dan Hartman "Relight My Fire"
Linda Clifford "Runaway Love"
Innr Life "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (Levan Remix)
Well, kinda as stated..it really depends on the audience your spining to. I mean..for a wedding or something like that the basic pop tunes would be the best bet (Bee Gees, Anita Ward "Ring My Bell",etc). To a club audience or possible a private party the disco club stuff would be essentals like Martin Circus "Disco Circus". Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Cerrone "Supernature", Amant "If There's Love", Alec R Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet",etc. Im not one too fond of all that pop stuff (which people that know me know LOL) but hey,I admit, ive played it and some of the now obscure 12" mixes of the pop ones are quite decent.
