did Psychedelic Furs copy David Bowie???

I was listening to Psychedelic Furs - Love my way and it sounds exactly like David Bowie. The vocals, the style. Did they copy David Bowie???

Pretty scary, isn't it? The Furs singer was probably the guy who did copy Bowie most accurately. However, many bands of the gothic/post-punk British movement had Bowie-like singers, and some of them payed hommage to the Ziggy-era via covers of that material. Some names that come to mind: Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen), and the singers of The Mission and The Church.
In the 90's, I remember hearing "A girl like you" (Edwyn Collins) for the first time and thinking it was Bowie himself! :oops:

Funny... I was thinking on answer this topic and I already did! :)
Anyway, there's another guy who did the "Bowier than Bowie" thing in the 90s: Jarvis Cocker, the singer from Pulp. The later the album, the more blatant the imitation!

Maybe my ears are plugged up, but the singer in the Furs has a voice that sounds very gravelly to me, a bit closer to Rod Stewart's, while Bowie's voice is strong, clear and sometimes quite theatrical (I can guarantee that the singer called Meat Loaf idolizes Bowie). I sure did love the Fur's extended version of "Heartbreak Beat", though. If any singer comes close to Bowie, in my opinion, it's his friend Iggy Pop. Did you know that he used to break glasses and beer bottles on stage and then lay on top of them so he could perform and bleed?

Anyone remember the hi-nrg cover of Love My Way by Rik Levay? (SAW production from the mid 80's)

Yes, I've got it on a strange compilation LP called 'Chunks Of Funk' where it's mixed funky stuff on one side (Alicia Myers, Windjammer etc.) & hi-nrg on the other (including the hilarious mix of 'You Think Youre a Man' by Divine where the guy at the beginning says 'Put your trousers back on, youre not here to enjoy yourself'!

I love the Rik Levay version of "Love My Way"! I also like "Behind A Painted Smile" by the Lewises from that "Chunks of Funk" album.

The Psychedelic Furs had some great songs. The 12" mixes for "Heartbreak Beat" and "Heartbeat" were both wonderful and I really liked the Shep Pettibone remix of "Shock" too. Plus some of their downtempo singles like "Love My Way" or "The Ghost In You" were very pretty too.
