    New Disco Tapes--Digging Deeper

I recently made 4 new tapes to play in my car. These are a tribute to that early DISCO sound (approx 1972-1977). Some songs I just recently discovered, some I finally found after years of searching, some I've owned for years, but just seemed to fit the tone of things.

I usually start by making a list of stuff I like--then do the bpms. Then I organize the songs starting with the lowest bpms so that they flow into nice consistent tape.

I had enough tunes this time for 4 110 minutes tapes.

    TAPE #1

Yum, yum, Marky. So many goodies: Gloria Scott, Cheryl Barnes, Fantastic Four, "Ask Me" (I'm gonna have this played at my funeral :) ), "Track of The Cat", "Law of The Land". You know those people you see "air drumming" behind the wheel? That would be me with these tapes!

Hi markeydefad: a bittersweet read in a way for me, as you reminded me of some of the records I had stolen many moons ago (still painful) that I never replaced. I used to be well into Sons Of Robin Stone, Blue Magic ('Look Me Up') and The Notations, even before I started deejaying.

I'd never realised that a record I used to adore (again, one of those that was stolen), 'Call Me Your Anything Man' by Bobby Moore, was the first 12" single (DJ Only). When I read this I was thinking that I mustn't have ever heard the full-length version, because my UK PYE 7" had pts 1 and 2 back to back, as singles often did back then, but now I've remembered that it wasn't in 2 parts, it was short and long versions (this is right isn't it Discodisk?). I'd love to be listening to that record now. Does anyone know if it's ever made it to CD?

With the right equipment and software -- oh, and a lot of tedious work -- it is possible to make a decent-sounding CD of almost any record.

Having said that, supposedly the full-length version does exist on a comp somewhere, although I can't remember the details.

I must confess, I really don't understand the fuss over this one. It doesn't do much for me to begin with, and the 12" version is way too damn long!! Over 9 minutes, and it doesn't seem to add anything that isn't in the 3-minute radio edit. *shrugs*

Greg: Jackie Moore "Call Me Your Anything Man" has made it to CD. Disco Gold Vol 2. One that slipped away for sure and a record I loved playing and listening to.

Marky: That's quite a mixture you have there, that in some ways demonstrates exactly why Disco had to happen. There were just too many styles within dance music, to appeal to the lowest common denominator, prior to Disco music.

Hi Quinny: Surely you meant Bobby Moore there. Do you know if these CD's are still available (and who puts them out?).

Linda Carr's "High Wire", a divine song, a powerful voice. Unfortunely so short. It's a sin. LInda Carr is an underground disco diva :P .

And, of course, a track that M People based one of their big hits, 'One Night In Heaven', around.

Greg: I thought I'd written Bobby Moore. Put it down to a senior moment. I think there are the odd few around, but you'll have to look. I'm sure I saw it on a Rhino release too, but of course I could be trippin'.
