How latin is your favorite disco track?

I hate when they mix disco with latin music.... Probably because I live in a latin country and I am fed up with the style. But I would choose ANOTHER CHA CHA - SANTA ESMERALDA and 12" DOMINO DANCING - PET SHOP BOYS which is not excessively latin and has a great melody.

Man, so many... but I can think of an early fave:

"I Wish" by Stevie Wonder. That subtle latin-keyboard flavor just knocks me out. Check out "Another Cha-Cha" --- same rhythm.

I got some true latin songs with the disco stamp :D :


"La Bamba" by Antonia Rodriguez. Traditional song from Mexico.
"El Condor Pasa" by Back In Time. Traditional song from Peru. Paul Simon from Simon&Garfunkel put the lyrics.
"Brazil" by The Ritchie Family. Traditional song from Brazil composed by the Brazilian Ary Barroso.
"I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)" by Grace Jones. Composed by Astor Piazzolla. Astor Piazzolla means tango and tango means Astor Piazzolla . He's from Argentina.

Two Man Sound "Que Tal Ameica", while not my all time favourite disco song, is a very successfull combintion of the 2 genres - especially as they were from Belguim

Though a little cheesy, I also like the instrumental of Azoto "San Salvador" with it's long flanged percussion breaks. Again another Euro production.

I've never come across much great disco music on any Brazilian or South American labels. In thoery you'd think there might be some killer jazzy latin disco on local labels from the late 70's - but if it exists I've never found it. The closest is maybe Charanga 76, but they were on a US Label.

but my vote for the most latin goes for :
Jimmy Sabater: To Be With You. Absolute dynamite.

Some disco tracks that I like & think have a latin influence are 'Dont make Me Wait' - Patti Brooks, 'Easy Come Easy Go' - Odyssey, 'Rough Diamond' - Madleen Kane & 'Cafe' - DD Sound. Oh & possibly 'Gypsy Lady'- Linda Clifford & 'Eldorado' - Voyage. I also like that Azoto track that Leatherman mentioned; notice your description of the 'flanged' bit is the same as the description on Disco Spectrum 2.

The Joe Cuba's single was published in 1975 on Tico.

Blue Rondo A La Turk - Me and Mr. Sanchez instr. (ditto #1; the dog's bollocks of a record)
Joe Bataan - La Botella ( ditto #2; this is what first turned me on to Salsa/Latin. Just love the repeated horn stabs and the effervescent sax playing)
George Duke - Brazilian Love Affair ( ditto #1; quite a diversion for him at the time.....a brilliant dance track)

Yep I agree, same goes for today's house music... Latin rhythms are over-done and for the most part, boring... with a few exceptions of course!
