Does anyone have any details behind the death of Sharon Redd, First Lady of Prelude Records and the woman behind such hits as 'Can You Handle It' and 'Beat The Street'. I have only heard that she died of AIDS in the early 90's.  How vague! Just curious.

She died of pneumonia on May 1, 1992 at 46 years old.
Many years ago I had several conversations with a person involved in dance music in which he described the events leading up to Sharon Redd's death. In an e-mail he said that Sharon had been performing on stage in her bare feet. She stepped on glass from a broken beer bottle and subsequently died sometime later from a very serious staph infection. If she had AIDS as has been reported then her resistance to a staph infection could have been compromised.
This e-mail dates from 1996-1997 so I don't know if I even have it. Can't ask the person who told me this as he passed away about 2 years ago. I'll check to see if I have it on a backup disk.

:o Bernie, I'm not sure where the hell I was when you replied to me but THANK YOU! LOL. I was going through the archives and I just now noticed this topic that I had completely forgotten about. Better late than never!Originally Written by Bernie
Your information is fascinating! What's odd is that several websites still speak about Sharon as if she is still alive. I'm not sure if AMG has even listed that she's deceased! Bernie, were you ever able to find that old email?
There isn't much information available about Miss Redd anywhere as far as I know. Judging by the few bits and pieces that I've seen it looks as if she lead a very colorful life! Has anyone ever bothered to write an extensive article or something about her? Her story would make one hell of a book!
Thank you too DiscoMan.
I have never found the e-mail, but I could swear I had it on a backup disc. Over the years I have moved several times so I'm hoping it wasn't lost. If I do find it I will post here.

Thanks Bernie. Hopefully, someone will write a book or a series of articles about performers like Sharon Redd, Loleatta Holloway, Jocelyn Brown, etc. I'd love to read all about "The Golden Age of Disco" from an underground diva's point of view!Originally Written by Bernie
I'd love to see a book like that! Hell, I may even write it myself LOL  Actually I've always wanted to write a book - this is a pretty good topic...it would also be the first book ever about disco, written in the danish language - somehow I can't see publishers caring about stuff like that overe here though  :x
It's on my "to do" list now...along with taking out the trash 'n stuff!
BTW Rod...I checked AMG. It seems they realized that Sharon Redd did die now. (only took 12 years  )
Bernie:
You are correct. Greg Stone mentioned this to me in our emails and phone conversations. Greg also filled me in on other Disco Divas of the day. I wish I still had those emails. Greg was such a nice guy. And, unfortunately, we did lose Greg a couple of years ago. It was nice to see Greg listed in the Whitburn Hot Dance/Disco book.
Yes, it was Greg Stone who mentioned this to me. I really need to see if I have this e-mail somewhere.Originally Written by Discomanic

Guys, would you be kind enough to tell me exactly who Greg Stone was? How was he involved in the entertainment biz? Thanks.
Be prepared. The awful truth will involve the fact that "Greg Stone" was, how do I say this delicately without offending your sensibilities.... uh, ......
gay
:D CLUTCH THE PEARLS! PLEASE TELL ME THIS ISN'T SO! LOL.Originally Written by markydefad
Marky, contrary to popular belief I don't mind the fact that Greg, yourself or anyone else is gay. I do have a problem with you being a washed up and bitter dragqueen who can only get thrills by posting bitchy remarks on this forum. Here's a bit of friendly advice. Why don't you take your thong or whatever's irritating you out of your azz and come back down to Earth wit the rest of us. Your pathetic!
Rod:
Greg Stone was from Toluca Lake, California. He was doing voice overs for commercials (which he was pretty good at).
He recorded a remake of the Trammps "That's Where The Happy People Go." He was in the process of recording a new song when he passed away. From what I can remember, Sharon passed to him the track for "Love Insurance" which he made a promo of. He also performed at various retro shows. He was good friends with Marlena Shaw, Jayne Edwards and Tata Vega (which was his next door neighbor). I know this because I received emails from Ms. Edwards and Ms. Vega's assistant when he passed. He had a small part in the movies "Thank God It's Friday" and if I remember correctly, a small part in "Can't Stop The Music" featuring Village People.
There are so many of us who are hetero who abosluetly feel this way. Homosexuality wasn't an issue with us when we were young and hetero and it isn't an issue with us now that we're aging and hetero.Marky, contrary to popular belief I don't mind the fact that Greg, yourself or anyone else is gay.

Marky,
Rodmann,
I haven't been on the board much lately so I don't know why the "bitch blasts". I'll ask that they not continue. No more to say.
Thanks for this information Discomanic. This is the first time that I've heard about Mr. Stone. I'll keep my eyes for material by him. :DOriginally Written by Discomanic

If I'm too "BITCHY" for ya, please turn the page when ya see my "Dragname" in cue. I realize some people are lacking in the sense of humor department. Try lyour local Wal-mart. I think they're have a back-to-school sale. (Yeah, that's called "sarcasm".) :o DUH.
I know, in the future, I shall really try to keep my posts more manly and fulla sports analolgies. Fuckin' A, man. :D (That's called a Blatant LIE). (Just wanna make sure you understand.) Que?
BTW, Sharon Redd was a lesbian. :P
P.S. "Clutch the pearls" is a veeeeery gay phrase. That one's even beyond my repertoire. Quelle surprise.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Alright, this was funny, but now it's time to stop all the nonesense of the last few days. I'm not going to let ANYONE continue dragging the forum down. If anyone doesn't like it, please leave.
