Hi. I collect disco/funk on all formats, 7", 12", LP, CD, MP3, video etc...

Anyhow got a rare disco/funk 7" from 1975 which is an Eruption record containing the following:
Side A - Let Me Take You Back In Time
    Side B - Funky Lover

    GREAT record!

Anyhow I've got a number of 7" disco records in my collection, half of them are chart topping songs and half are more rarer ones.

    Paul C, why not?

some 7" singles were released but never charted..

I don't necessary collect them, however I've come across some songs that did hit it big... and I have the 7" promo to go along with my collection. If I was collecting records and was having trouble finding the domestic releases, why not pick up the promo??? as long as it's in M- or VG+ who cares. :)

In a lot of cases the early disco hits were only available on 7" or LP as the 12" format had not been fully established till about 1976.And as I recall the disco sound began emerging in about 1974 .Anyways I still have a lot of 7" vinyl from those years but I don't actually look for it when hunting around for additional music as much of it is in poor condition. If I need a particular song from that time frame I try to get the Lp which it was released from.

Sometimes 7"s have different radio mixes, so I get these when I can. Otherwise, a straight fade or edit is of no use - though occasionally, the 7" edits are better. As much as I love 'Standing On The Top' by The Temptations, for example, the 12" version does test me with its 9 mins. + duration. Apart from some of the natty riffing near the end of the long version, the edit says all the tune has to say in half the time.

Absolutely VAST amounts of dance stuff was originally realesed as 7-inchers only during the 1975-78 period in Europe. Some them got recycled on popular compliations a couple of months later, some faded into obscurity. I've been collecting eurodisco singles obsessively and there is no end to the stuff at all. I'm probably buying some 20 a month or so, sometimes less, sometimes a lot more, year after year. Many turn out to be not even worth listening once but I cannot resist a great picture sleeve if it's got a slutty-looking girl in a leopard skin outfit or a midget carrying a submachine gun. Every now and then you do come across a "promo" but those with longer versions are mostly British or American realeses.
7-inchers were always hard to spin in clubs but some djs tended to glue a good track on a bad 12-incher for easier mixing.

Speaking of early disco promo 7"s I happen to have a Van McCoy "Change With The Times" 7" promo on the AVCO label, it's the same track both sides. Sadly for somehow the record got cracked, I don't know how as I bought it in good nick. And I haven't rough handled it neither. Bit of a mystery to me.

A questionable 7" I have is Bill Brandon's 'We Fell In Love While Dancing', on a red Prelude promo. It's 7 mins. + (possibly longer than the LP version) and plays at 45 - bet the engineer had to sit down after mastering that one! Surely the contender for longest disco 45 7"?

(wrote this post a while back but forgot to post it)

Many early club records (72/76) were released on small 7” regional labels only, the only way to own this music at the time was on 7”, many of them ‘promo’ copies pressed for radio, many times the Artist later recorded an LP maybe not, other times 7” hits may have been picked up and released by the big boys but with a different label design and mix.; Also before the introduction of the 12” many 7” were released with the ‘Long” or later “disco” version on them. Here are some examples, AFAIK I’ve never seen on LP or 12”, if anyone knows chime in…

‘Number Onederful” (Promo- Event -75) Jay & The Technics Disco Version 5:38, retail release is only 3:54 long
“Call me your anything man (Scepter-75) Bobby Moore, Tom Moulton, Disco version 5:48, I think available on old compilation LP ?.

“Never gonna leave you” (Brunswick- 75) Maryann Farra and Satin Soul, Tom Moulton Disco version 5:35
“Charleston Hustle” (Cenpro – 75) The Starlings & MFM Orchestra, Long version 4:22
“Autum Leaves” (Cenpro-75) Jon White Group Long version 5:26

“Jealousy” Part I & II ( The sound of Washington DC-75) Natural Order 3:20

“I’ll be seen you” (Grandstand-76) Jeff Evans 4:10 plus Instrumental flip

“Follow the wind” (Renee-72) Midnite Movers, part I&II on flip

“Nowhere” (shield-75) Hokis Pokis 3:32 very nice song

“To die of love” (Promo -Annuity coeptis -76) Etta Cameron, apparently French Barclay original? She sounds like Cher

"the House is rocking" (GRP-75) Bobby Calwell, lost my copy and haven't been able to recoop. Nice blue eye soul cut.

I have Natural Order on 12". Pretty sure I have a Satin Soul 12" - maybe I'm confusing it with something else, though...I keep thinking 'Buddah'...

Wow, Natural Order on 12” never even seen it on Ebay, that must be a very rare promo, since the advent of the Internet I’ve learned that many of my fave 7” were released on promo 12”, I’ll add this one to my hunt list, see if you can track down Satin Soul info. Thanks

edit: Guess what my hunt list has Natural Orders 12" listed, it must have been at Ebay after all.
Another 7" I found lately on 12" is "My Love Supreme"Milton Hamilton Crystalized(5:10)same lengh as the Lp.

I know a few people who have 'Jealousy' on 12" - some even have spares. It's not nearly as rare as some think, I reckon you've just been unlucky to have missed it up 'til this point. I'll be entering some items on the database when I get my scanner going - and I'll include that 12", as well as one I once gave away(!) a spare of and haven't seen since, 'Zone' by The Rhythm Makers.

Natural Order sold on Ebay for about US $ 35 to 40 the last time I saw it. It is rare but not impossible.

I am pretty sure that the only 12" by Mary Ann Farra & Satin Soul is "Do those little things" b/w " Just a little timing". It is a promo Brunswick with mix by Tom Moulton
