Thread: "A Night at Studio 54" LP

    Does anyone remember the double LP, "A Night at Studio 54"? It had a black cover with silver and gold writing on it, with a big 54 on it? It was on the Casablanca label I believe and it was really an excellent collection from 1977-1979 to have. What made this double album so nice is that all the songs were superbly mixed. It would have been wonderful for this to go on CD, but apparently it never did? Does anyone have any info on this?

    I have that LP--but I don't recall it having good mixes. In fact, I thought they were real abrupt-like slide the fader across from right to left and catch the beat or just edit from one beat of a song to a beat of the next. I may be guilty of faulty memory, but I remember thinking the mixes weren't anything compared to what they did at the Troc.



    Anyone else remember?

    You are correct Markydefad. Keep in mind, a "cut" can be just as creative as a mix. Some of the mixes are on the abrupt side, but not abrasive. If you still have the LP, listen to YMCA/Village People and hear how it goes into Disco Nights/GQ, this is not your usual abrasive abrupt mix at all...

    Ok, I get your point. But I am a fan of the overlay mix where the next song comes creeping in under the current song and eventually takes over. I don't know--it seemed more artful and requiring more skill to overlay stuff. Just my personal preference.

    The Cut was a key element in those Hollywood, Hollywood II, Hollywood III, Deadly Medley and Fusion mixes from 1978 - 1979.



    I believe in blending mixes with a passion, but the true art, form is to cut in a record from it's ending through a fade.

    Could you clarify a little bit or just clear up my head. Are you saying mix while the song is "fading" or mix using the "Fader" as opposed to "Volume Gains"?

    I have a tape where the dj cuts from one song to another rather than beat mix and it sounds great. However, when I try to do it on my cd player it doesn't sound as good.

    Yes the LP 'A Night At Studio 54' was enjoyable but had a few sad mixes on it. Example one is the 'Le Freak' by 'Chic' and the attempt to mix 'Let's All Chant' by the Michael Zager Band. It was a bad attempt at a 'overlay' which didn't work. My favorite mix (not really a mix, but a 'slam' that worked) was Love and Kisses 'I Found Love (Now That I Found You)' into Donna Summer's 'Last Dance'. Another 'train wreck' on that LP was on Side 4 with the mix of Musique's 'In The Bush' into the late Dan Hartman's 'Instant Replay'. Even with the bad mixes on the LP, this is really an item to have in any Disco Lover's collection!!

    This is the album that got me interested in DJ'ng in the first place. My pops would play this album & I could not get enough of it. I have it up on my LIVE365.COM broadcast. Take a listen & judge for yourself. I think it is decently mixed.

    With the excaoption of one track,all of the songs on this two LP set have been reissued on different CDs.

    (I think the LP could be issued as a single disc)

    Let me clarify this for you, Bro...



    When using the crossfader on a mixer, you're mixing from left to right or vice versa.



    When you're using the fader or up and down switch, depending on what type of mixer that you're using either increases or decreases its level in volume as you mix.



    For example: The Pioneer DJM-500 DJ Mixer levels stay the same in with its volume control when the crossfader is in the middle as you mix with the up and down fader.



    An old model Rane Mixer that I used in a club volume decreased when I used the fader (up and down) switches, and increased in volume once I used the crossfader.

    I thought the mixes on "A Night At Studio 54" were okay. I agree with the bad attempt to mix "Le Freak" into "Let's All Chant". The latter song was edited beyond belief. I didn't like Karen Young's "Hot Shot" into Patrick Juvet's "I Love America". That was very abrupt.

    Another "mix" album that I found a real disappointment was the Walter Gibbons-mixed "Salsoul Orchestra's Greatest Hits-Hits For Non-Stop Dancing". It was actually a cut album, with only one real mix on it: "It's Good For The Soul" into "Salsoul Rainbow". That was the only good moment on the album. The idea of putting Salsoul 3001's intro first, and then cutting to the intro of "Nice 'n Nasty" was an earache (I never really liked "Salsoul 3001"). One cut was a treat: the drum sequence on "Magic Bird Of Fire" into the drum sequence of "It's Good For The Soul".
