They can't have been that big. They certainly never covered my slipmats, nor many other UK DJ's (if any). Too poppy by far I'm afraid, to have much disco cred. Sorry if that might offend, but I believe it's more or less how they're viewed.
Who made that top??? Just a few famous and distinguish artists and the rest... WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE??? Where's number one of the 80s - Modern Talking?? Did I miss something??? :-?

Well firstly in UK you have always had music tastes different from other European countries.. And I was speaking in general, they were super stars in Germany, Netherlands, Russia etc which however make them BIG stars of the 80s and leave them a place in TOP10 of disco artists. Anyway the TOP500 represented on this site doesn't reflect at all the real facts.. I wonder who and how made it?
The TOP 500 was compiled from votes cast by posters to this site. Everyone was asked to forward their top 25 or 30 (can't remember) records. If Modern Talking aren't in there it's 'cos no-one who submitted their top 30 cared for them.
I think 3 out of my 30 made the top 500.
I consider the top 500 to fall in the 1975-1980 time frame when disco hit it's stride. Was Modern Talking part of that era?I have to agree with Quinny.I don't recall them having any major hits in North America.I'm sure there are artists from other parts of the world that were huge locally but unless they had a major hit or exposure in North America were overlooked.Maybe we could discuss a Top 100 for Europe from that era and to see what we overlooked here.I think it would be interesting. The hard part would of course be trying to track down these to hear them.
Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush
I don't recall Modern Talking ever making it outside mainland Europe. In fact, we had a thread going on about the duo sometime ago and it seemed a lot of members had never heard about Modern Talking in the first.
Granted the fact that most board members around here hail from either Northern America or the UK, I'm not surprised that Modern Talking did not appear on the Top 500.
Hello gelo,
WELCOME TO THE BOARD
There could be several reasons why Modern Talking does not appear on the latest Top 500. But, the main one would probably be as stated --- no one or not too many people submitted them in their personal lists.
Another reason could be our poll was skewed (screwed?) by "outsiders" wanting to place Donna Summer at the pinnacle. Also, the board administrator had given us a certain timeframe to deal with. Modern Talking, being mid to late 80's might have been excluded for that reason.
Good to have you with us. Keep those questions and opinions flowing. :)

Modern Talking mmmmmm yes. A contraversial one! I have to say i have never been a major fan of that german group.
I have to agree with quinny et al when they down it because it should be downed. Continental europe has thrown some serious garbage music at us for a long time and modern talking were one of the first shots! Yes ok they had one or two internatinal hits with brother louie and geronimos cadillac but overall their material wreaks of german style pop and as we all know germany is not known for brilliant musical exports. They tip toed between late euro disco and trashy pop romance. It may have worked for the french belgian and german markets but it never quite did it for me. Although i have to say i think i bought their greatest hits last month
It's not that controversial, is it? Whatever the merits or otherwise of their music (I have rather a soft spot for "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" and "Brother Louie") it has to be said that no one in their right mind would include anything from Modern Talking in a list of songs purporting to showcase the best of what is commonly understood to be "disco music".Originally Written by jamesyirishguy
I totally agree with you billywho, I think Modern Talking is not in the list, because having hits in the mid 80's, they are not considered disco.it has to be said that no one in their right mind would include anything from Modern Talking in a list of songs purporting to showcase the best of what is commonly understood to be "disco music".
But I think it's possible to vote for them, as Bernie told me I had the right to vote for Yaz.
