I figure this may be the section to post this in so im gonna just voice what I feel. Just saw the top 100 songs of the past 25 years according to VH1. Number 1 is Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...give me a fucking break! Thats all I gotta say..gimme a fucking break! Not to mention..VH1 has become almost as bad as MTV now with everything is hip hop or rap related..there were quite a few of those in there too as "the best songs" of 25 years. God help us all!

I have to disagree with you. I definitely think that Nirvana is one of the best bands of the past 25 years, and while "Smells Like Teen Spirit" isn't my favorite song of theirs (thought I do like it), I think that it belongs on the list. Either "Come As You Are", "Breed", or "Territorial Pissings" would have been better choices for the top spot, but SLTS is the big hit of theirs, so I understand why that's the Nirvana song that was picked. No, I didn't see the show (I still don't have cable). At least not all of the songs on the list are rap (which I hate majorly). I feel that Nirvana is one of the most important bands in rock.

Thats where I have to disagree, it is not the best song of the past 25 years. I mean your gonna tell me Nirvana is best of 25 years than say legends like the stones, george harrison, dylan (who im not fond of but still a legend and talent), bowie, neil young etc???? I'm sorry, but Nirvana was nothing to me but the begining of the "i hate life", "my life sucks","i wanna kill myself" and wear flanel jackets and cry crap of the more current teenage generation. I will say the other members of the band (minus Kurt Cobain) had other talents and showed them after Nirvana was gone and have some ok songs (nothing i'd buy though). But the number one song out of 25 years of great music?? I bet if Cobain didn't do the lame **** he did they woulda been long gone and just remembered as a brief 90's grunge thing. Thats my oppinion anyhow..but like the Faith Hope & Charity track says "To Each His Own"...

Everybody has their own opinion. But you have to remember that life isn't always peachy, and I think that Nirvana's music reflected that. I think that Nirvana would still be popular if Kurt Cobain didn't kill himself. If they were only a fad, they (along with the other "grunge" acts) would have been long forgotten regardless of what Cobain did to himself. It's been almost a decade since his suicide. By the way, I'm curious about your opinion of bands such as Korn and Slipknot. They're two other favorites of mine.

I definitely don't feel that Korn and Slipknot are just yelling and screaming. Yes, the music of both bands are heavy and aggressive (Slipknot even more so than Korn), but that's what I love about them. Having been into metal for two decades (and growing up with bands like Metallica and Slayer), it's natural that the likes of Korn and Slipknot would appeal to me. If you don't like those bands, you definitely won't like any death metal band.

I'm guessing you're wondering by now: How did I get into disco? I found another genre that would sound good to me. I've posted on this board countless times about how much I love the Andrea True Connection. I also like Donna Summer, Earth Wind & Fire, Barry White, Gloria Gaynor, Kool and the Gang, and the list goes on and on. Like metal, I think that disco is wonderful to listen to. I wouldn't expect Donna Summer to sing about the same things as Nirvana or Slipknot, but then again, she's a different type of performer. What she sings is just as meaningful.

One more question: What's your opinion of Britney Spears? Yes, I do like her music as well. She is as irrelevant to the topic of this thread as Korn and Slipknot, but I figure to ask since I'm on a roll here.

Well, Britney..I don't like any of that stuff either LOL, it kinda falls almost in the same catogory as hip hop to me. I really feel music totaly sucks since the dawn on the 90's in all honesty which is when i began turning away from new stuff as nothing was good to me anymore. As for metal, yea belive it or not I liked real "metal" but these days it's no longer called that. Metalica was great up till they came out with that "Load" LP which was a total sell out to alternative/grunge music. I mean look at say "Ride The Lightning" or even the black album and then listen to "Load" or the latest they've done..I dont know what the hell to call that. I was heavy into (and still sometimes pull out the LP's and crank em in my spare time) Scorpions, Quiet Riot, Cinderella (which the lead guitarist from my old hard rock band was taught to play by one of the studio guitarists on the first LP), Motely Crue..the list goes on and on..oh also 70's era (Bon Scott) AC/DC is one of my top fave rock bands of all time. This **** thats out today is just not my thing nor can I get into it. But one thing..I would listen to Korn rather than listen to Britney or Backstreet Boys LOL

Fair enough. I realize that on this board I probably have the minority opinion of Britney, Slipknot, Nirvana, and many more of my favorites. As for Metallica, "Load" is one of my least favorite albums of theirs, but not because they supposedly "sold out". I just think it's one of their weakest efforts. As for "St. Anger", I was really disappointed with that one. The production is horrible, the drum sound is awful, and it seems like they're trying too hard to be angry and aggressive (I think they failed at both). It's like they're trying to follow trends rather than setting them. They still rock live, though.

As for the rest of today's music, it's like with music from any other time period: Some I like, some I don't. In addition to the artists I already mentioned, I also like such artists as Marilyn Manson, Avril Lavigne, the Donnas, Pink, Skinlab, In Flames, Opeth, Shadows Fall, and many†more. For the most part, my taste in music seems to be either from the 70s or from the 90s to today. The complete list is way too long to mention here.

And hopefully I'll never have to hear yet again that the Knack killed disco. I will never believe that.

I like some of Manson's stuff now lol. I think "Dope Show" is a great track with great lyrics.. also "I Dont Like The Drugs", that one kinda has a funk feel to it, thats a few of the some I like (those 2 from same album). As for The Knack killing disco?? I've never even related them to disco nor saw any connection till recently mentioned here (still confused on the whole deal lol). The Knack was new wave rock. Not disco. Not to mention, they only had 1 hit here in the USA (i dont know if your from here or not) but know they were popular elsewhere. They were a good band from the 1 LP I know from 79. About Metalica, you said it exactly right..trying to follow trends, thats what I ment by selling out. Maybe someday they'll return to their own sound..thats when i'll buy another Metalica album. Last one I bought was Black Album.

I'm sure you have already read the countless messages on why the Knack supposedly killed disco (and why I don't think they did). The general view seems to be that they did because "My Sharona" was a big hit when disco still ruled the charts. To many here, that meant that disco was on its way out. I don't need to state yet again why I disagree, as I've done so on several other threads. I remember as a then-preteen how popular "My Sharona" was (I am from the USA). But like you said, the Knack's days as hitmakers didn't last beyond that one song. But you can probably catch them at a club near you (yes, they are still together). And one band that listed them as an influence: Nirvana. I remember one time reading an article on them where Kurt Cobain said his band's sound was a cross between the Knack, Black Flag, and Black Sabbath (or someting like that). That would be an accurate description of their sound. And the Knack's main influence is obviously the Beatles. But the Knack destroyed disco as much as the Beatles did.

I agree 100% with you there. The Knack did not kill disco lol. Actualy disco that was on the pop charts wasn't real disco for the most part anyhow. Also, disco never died (as shown in another thread). If ya wanna know what I think killed the word "disco" it was The Bee Gees with their poor wanna be disco stuff that was pure annoying pop crap (minus one song they did that I concider real disco). The pop charts in 79 and before was mixed with all kinds of different music (as im sure you know) so..that's my oppinion LOL

I won't even get into what is or isn't disco (another subject that's been discussed on numerous threads). That's also subjective. But here's another thing I don't understand: Many of the people who claim that the Knack killed disco don't like most mainstream disco in the first place, so why should they care if the Knack killed it or not? Underground disco wouldn't have placed high on the Billboard charts regardless. Also, there were lots of rock hits during the disco era (some were chart-toppers). I don't think that anyone would accuse the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac of killing disco. So why would the Knack be any different? They just were doing their thing, which was being a rock band, and they happened to have a hit single and album during the disco era. Oh well.

Im one of those people that don't really care for mainstream disco LOL..but I dont think anything killed disco..espessaly a great new wave band. I'm a strict what was played in the discos person. However, some people that like the underground stuff don't relise that disco didn't die and what was going on with radio disco pop had nothing to do with the real thing.

The records blowing up in Chicago... was the start of things to come... Then the word Disco became uncool. The general public jumped on the bandwagon... The later part of the year saw songs that were to hard to touch dance to... the music went back to r&b. The Knack... really had nothing to do with it... other than a little shock during that summer....

Nirvana,,,,, great song but we have to figure out who was voting for the best songs of the last 25 years? Where did the votes come from? How old were the voters?

But I still don't see how one "event" could affect an entire genre of music. That was one incident. How could that alone cause the downfall of disco? Did the DJ who organized it really have that much influence? It was nothing more than a publicity stunt for the radio station he worked at. Or so I thought. I still wonder why that DJ had so much hatred for disco, if he really did.

You know what I think of the Knack regarding disco. And I find nothing shocking about them having a hit single during the disco era. It was no more shocking than the Eagles having a hit single during the disco era (and they had several). But that's just me.

I assume you were as old as I was during this time... or we were similar in age. Going to a disco... and disco music was a fad... It was a way of life for a % of people...

Now, if you were watching American Bandstand... During that year... most of the music played was Disco... the entire show was centered around it. When you watched TV, some of the shows had disco music playing in it... on the cop shows, comedy shows, etc. etc. Now, white america is pretty much tired of getting disco forced down their throat. Everywhere they go... disco disco disco disco. Somethings got to give, don'tcha think? Plus to a rock 'n roller (excluding you) :lol: :lol: ... you are pretty much sick of this fucking music and you want it to stop...

Now if radio has stopped adding those songs to their playlists & club owners are seeing a drop off of their patrons and they make a decision to shut the club down. It means the fad is dying.

Logic would have it that if people didn't like disco, they had the choice not to bother with it. But with disco being so omnipresent at the time, a backlash was probably inevitable. And like with all fads, this one was bound to end at some point. But disco did leave its mark on music, which can be found to this day.
