If I was to run a radio station today,I would most likely have a "Progressive Top 40" format with MUSIC during the mornings!

I would probobly play all the top 40 using Billboard's hot 100 to start with a lighter rotation (4 -5 times TOPS in 24 hours) and pop, rock, soul and disco classics from the 50s to today.

My type of music station in the late 70s would be an Album Rock/Disco mix aimed at an audience who like BOTH Album rock AND disco and would want a place where they could enjoy BOTH!

Looks like 2 votes in favor.

Are you talking about the current progrssive top 40 or the Album rock/disco mix?

The Album Rock/Disco Mix version is something that I think all would enjoy.

Not to bring anyone down but didn't a New York station --- KISS? KTU? --- try a ROCK/DISCO thing back in the 80's? I think it bombed... big time. I remember listening to it several times and thinking the "head shifts" were too severe. Instead of gathering people who liked both styles of music they alienated everyone. It could have been a combination of what they were playing and how they chose to play. It left you with a feeling that the station was confused about its own format. Too bad, really.

WOR-FM in 1948, adopting a progressive rock format in August, 1966 and changing to a Top 40/oldies format in 1967. Call letters changed to WXLO on 10/23/72, and then to WRKS 98.7 KISS-FM (Urban) on August 1, 1981.

That would be a problem. How to do it right.

Getting back to the Progressive Top 40.,that would do EVERYTHING that is in the top 40 Rap,pop, rock, soul,DISCO,anything (Well maybe not country)

That would be awesome. I would definitely listen to that station. I can imagine a radio station that plays artists as diverse as Britney Spears and Slipknot. That sounds good to me.

Does any of the regulars from Los Angeles remember KTNQ 1020 during their days as a top-40 station? I read from this one website that they had a really diverse playlist, and that they played artists like Donna Summer and the Sex Pistols. I wish that station still had that format.

Any station that would play ALL 40 songs on the current hot 100 top 40 would probobly qualify.

Let's get back to the disco music (which would definatly have a place on Progrssive Top 40)

Jim, this may be the model for your dream radio station:

    Looks good to me.

The DJs would have to be folks who LIKE the music and be able to play lets say The Gibson Brothers right after Led Zeppelin and think nothing of it.

I would have fewer contests and such in favor orf let's enjoy the music.

Now in the 70s I would probobly prefer an album rock/ disco format as opposed to straight Top 40 with 12" versions of pop disco hits and some club tracks tossed in.,although there were some decent non disco pop songs

Come to think of it,I just realized something.
In 1985 a TV channel signed on the air playing music videos over broadcast TV. WVJV- channel 66. (or V66)

They WERE just that a blending of WBCN (which was still progrssive rock) and Kiss108 which was still urban leaning Top 40.
It went to home shopping in Oct 86 ,though.

Although it was losing money,it had good ratings and was doing so within projections.

Hello Room, great topic but unfourtanley most radio stations are OWNED by a major company/backer. In my market we had a wonderful 'Disco/Top 40 Rock (JO 101fm)staton owned by 'Clear Channel'. Earlier this year it was turned into a 80's/current Top 40 station. I find the best way to enjoy music I love is by CD. I bring my favorite artists/groups with me and I am able to enjoy the music 'commerical free'.

A couple of years ago in Argentina we had FM Nostalgie, which mixed old -and some new- rock & soul classics. They would work with "climates" (5 to 10 songs on a given style played back to back) switching from disco to soul, to white soul, to 80's pop, to 60's pop, etc. It worked quite good.
The best part was that on Saturday nights they played a U.S. disco & soul program conducted from Los Angeles by DJ Rosko himself!
Sadly, someone bought out the station and now it's just another Top 40 ****...

If you want a radio that's so diverse in musical taste, then you have to check our national youth radio overhere in belgium! STUDIO BRUSSEL !!!
They play different styles of music next to each other, ranging from pop, rock, house, breakbeat, drum&bass, ragga, hiphop, r&b, classic funk and disco, 80's hits, ....
and it's not always the latest hits that they play! But lots of classics in all genres, and brand new discoveries! (So you won't find bitchey spears in the playlist)
They also have a live internet radiostream!
    check it out on: http://www.STUBRU.be
Click on the headphones to go to the live stream!

Currently they are running a summer schedule, not so diverse in programming. But still its great to listen at! Check out these programs for their diverse playlists : HANG THE DJ, DE MAX, EASY BIES, DISCOBAR GALAXIE, SOLID STEEL (coldcut on the mix, SUMMER SWITCH, ....

Your radio format idea sounds like a good one to me, I would definetely tune in at all times. It would be good to have a station that plays (like someone mentioned earlier)the Gibson Brothers one minute and Led Zeppelin the next. Unfortunately once I find a radio station that I love, its format is abruptly changed which is the case with Jammin'105.1. This station played mostly disco/funk with some of todays hits thrown in. On saturday nights, they was "OFF THE HOOK" and then one day they were GONE!!! It became a rap/hip-hop station!

I have to agree with that radio format also. It was unfortunate for Jammin 105.1 changing its format to Hot 97's competition. It was quite refreshing to hear disco/funk oriented songs from time to time. Also, I was blessed to have been given a chance to showcase my mixes on the Jammin Party Mix Weekend on Sunday, March 3, 2002 before the station changed its format one week and a half later. Thursday, March 14, 2002 was such a sad day for radio.
