Soul Train in the early years was great.Don't remember the song they signed off with but I do recall Don Cornelius' farewell in that rich baritone voice."Love,Peace and SOOOUL"
I believe the 1st soul train episode I watched was in 1972. Because I didn't live in the city, my sister and I had to spent the night over our cousins house just to watch it. Even though it was cool to see the actual groups perform their songs, I was more intrigued by watching the soul train gang dance to the music. I especially liked the soul train line because the couples in those days would actually dance down the isle together rather than how they do it today.
There were a few songs that come to mind that I would have never heard unless I watched the show. Some of the songs that come to mind are:
To Each His Own - Faith, Hope & Charity
Do What You Wanna Do - T-Connection
Take Me Just As I Am - Lyn Collins
Funky President - James Brown
Ask Me - Ecstasy, Passion & Pain
Jump - Aretha Franklin
The above seem pretty generic, but where I live we didn't have an established soul station until around 1980 that actually has survived to the present.
I was wondering, does anybody remember the first song used at the end of the show? If you watch the movie
Crooklyn you'll be able to hear it. I don't believe during the shows first 2 years they used a theme songs like TSOP - MFSB. I thought I recalled hearing War's - "The Cisco Kid" one day.... I could be wrong tho. Also, in your early years, did you buy any records directly from watching the show?
here's a link that inspired my writing the thread:

Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush
Well, Obviously i'm in the wrong country (AGAIN  ) 'cause I've never even seen one single Soul Train Show. :(
Hovewer i'm very well aware of the the supposed importance it had concerning the promotion of black music back in the day. I'd love to see some of the shows one day.
