Best From Artist 57 - "Rockers"

No, I didn't mean Rockers Revenge. However I did want to spice things up on this topic and acknowledge those rock artist who were disco curious :)
Next week we'll be back to true disco artist. This week will however gives us a chance to get the My Sharona's (god forbid) some recognition. My choice is Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." Rod hit one out the park with song. That sax break sealed it for me.

I think "Do It Again" by Steely Dan got the disco fever or the disco influenza :D :D :D .

    Ooh, where do we begin?

If Steely Dan's being allowed (should it / shouldn't it?) then I'll plump for Chicago's - 25 or 6 To 4 maybe or Ides Of March - Vehicle as two of the earliest ones that pushed my buttons. These were probably more like Jazz Fusion than anything else, but were both big on the dance floor. Otherwise there was a whole raft of Glam Rock records that scored.

In the true disco era I'd also say that Rod's Sexy was about the best along with John Miles - Slowdown (loved the talk box guitar solo). Later on, I absolutely flipped at Animotion's - Obsession.

    efunk's picks

OK Paul, here's my list of Rockers Revenge:

Four Seasons - December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)
    although they are considered pop...

Rolling Stones - Miss You (7" or LP)
I like it for the sax solo... however, the 12" is good...

Eagles - One Of These Nights
i guess we can argue about this song... it has a disco beat

    Paul McCartney/Wings
    Goodnight Tonight... 12" version

Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy
12" version... gotta love that intro

    David Bowie - Fame/Golden Years
    both of these are classics

    Grateful Dead - Shakedown Street
very unusual group to be doing a disco song...

Exile - Kiss You All Over
    great sing-a-long song

    Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom
I actually didn't like this song very much... til around the mid 80's.... took that long to grow on me..

there is a whole slew of stuff that hit the disco charts... like B-52's, Flying Lizards... but i'm gonna stick with my picks before 1980 and leave it at that... :)

these very soft rock songs complete my disco-rock songlist:

"A Little More Love" by Olivia Newton-John
"Love Fever" by Bay City Rollers
"You're The Only One I Ever Needed" by Cheryl Ladd

    rock solid :P :P :P

    Hi Paul

Rod's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" is my choice for the rockers. Didn't KISS make a disco type song? I forgot the title.

    "Miss You" - Rolling Stones
    "Goodnight Tonight" - Wings
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - Rod Stewart
"Another One Bites The Dust" - Queen
"I Was Made For Loving You" - Kiss
"My Sharona" - the Knack - just kidding

While I don't think that the Eagles song "One Of These Nights" is disco, it does have a Bee Gees vibe to it, so it's close enough

Here are some non-disco-styled rock songs that could be danceable

    "Peg" - Steely Dan
    "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith
    "The Girl's Got Rhythm" - AC/DC
    "Wanton Song" - Led Zeppelin

There's another song I should add to the list: "Rock The Casbah" by the Clash. This song was not only a hit, it came out in 1982, after the disco era had ended.

If ya saw the 1979 episode of VH-1's "I Love The '70's"...you saw Nile Rodgers of Chic, no less....do the commentary on a song that changed the music business that year. Yep, ole Nile himself did the "My Sharona" section saying that after the disco records were burned the "music industry embraced this record as the wave of the future".

I got a little chill.

    My personal fave:

    Blondie's "Heart Of Glass"
A simply GREAT record--I never tire of it. :P

    Then...

"Miss You" - The Rolling Stones
"I Was Made For Loving You" - Kiss
"Another One Bites The Dust" - Queen
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - Rod Stewart
"Running From Paradise" - Hall & Oates

I agree that Elton John's 1975 "Philadelphia Freedom" had a great discoish sound--an homage to Gamble & Huff.

The year before that, in 1974, Elton John produced Kiki Dee's "I've Got The Music In Me" that, except for the electric guitars, could have been a "Disco record". At 5:03, it even has the extended version vibe that at this early date was kinda rare for a pop record.

I was always surprised that no one did a full-on "DISCO" version of this song. Thelma Houston did record it in the early 80's --but it wasn't really a dance version.

    Well, let's see...

    MISS YOU - ROLLING STONES
DO YA THINK I'M SEXY - ROD STEWART
VICTIM OF LOVE - ELTON JOHN (Loved that 4-disc box set)
DIRTY LAUNDRY - DON HENLEY (and his '85 12", "All She Wants to Do is Dance")
SOUL / HEAVEN ABOVE ME - FRANKIE VALLI
FLY TOO HIGH - JANIS IAN
HOW COULD YOU BE SO COLD - CAPTAIN & TENILLE (If Casablanca had done the proper mixdown on this they would have had a 7-minute killer. Why give me 4/4 that can barely be heard or felt  .)
I WAS BORN TO LOVE YOU and LOVE KILLS - FREDDIE MERCURY
ABOVE AND BEYOND - EDGAR WINTER
ANGEL FACE - THE GLITTER BAND
EYES WITHOUT A FACE - BILLY IDOL
MAMA - PHIL COLLINS (for Danny )

Well, how could I forget Roxy Music's "ANGEL EYES"?????? A classic in 1979 and a real harbinger of the music to come. In fact, Trocadero seemed to play this more as the 80's progressed. By 1983, it sounded like a current record, not an oldie.

If we're getting into the 1980's stuff, what about the John Luongo 12" mix of Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy"?

Then there were several Robert Palmer tunes that Troc liked: "Looking For Clues" & "Johnny & Mary".

Steve Winwood's "Night Train" & "Higher Love" were good ones.

Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" made my feet wanna dance.

Anyone remember "The Beat Escape" by Fingerprintz? Liked that one with it's insistent "beep-beep-beep" motif. Or was it "beat-beat-beat"????

Tom Tom Club's "Wordy Rappinghood" and "Genius Of Love" are faves.

Talk Talk's "It's My Life" ranks as one of my all-time '80's faves...and then the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode...don't get me started. Don't even get me started.!!!!! :P

"Wings of Fire" by Dennis Coffey :P

Hey guys, especially those of you in Britannia. Is Kokomo a rock group? If so, "use Your Imagination" would be my favorite from Rockers.

    Hey Paul,

What do you think? Should we put Cher in this list? I mean, she was a rocker long before her Casablanca stuff, right?

    Hey Nicky.
At first I was going to say sure because this topic now has artist like Hall & Oates and the Tom Tom Club. Groups rightly or wrongly I don't necessarily see in the same light as Kiss for example.
After some more thought and perhaps worthy of discussion all it's own, Cher just seems to be a universal artist to me. I guess what I mean is she sings in whatever style suits her fancy at that moment in time.
Having said all that, I'm curious to know your selection from her. I think I know already but you always surprise me Nicky :D

Tom Robinson's 'Never Gonna Fall In Love (again)' & The Tubes' 'Prime Time' are 2 disco-by-rock-artist tracks that really float my boat babies. I'd also choose 'Glamour Profession' by Steely Dan but you'd say I was being biased or predictable!

Get down with the heavy, heavy funk rock y'all!!

Funk No 49 - The James Gang (filled floors)
I Just Wanna Celebrate - Rare Earth (a revelation!)
May The Cube Be With You - Dolby's Cube ( Thomas Dolby) (gotta mention this as it only ever gets mentioned by me and such a brilliant record too! Anyone who produced Whodini's Magic Wand and made records like this coming from a rock background has got to be solid. 'Science' was O.K. but was merely echoing what loadsa others were doing at the time).
Sussudio - Phil 'you owe me money' Collins (I know lots of ya don't much care for the guy, but this record was a dancefloor winner all the way for me. A great record to mix in and out of too).

Well, Hall & Oates and Tom Tom Club are more from the pop/rock world than most DISCO artists, I'd say. :P

BUT, kidz-- we are all forgetting SPARKS!!!!!

Previously an arty rock group a' la' Queen---they worked with Mr. Moroder in 1979 and started a whole new phase to their career. From then on, they did "dance rock disco" it seems.

Some highlights of this phase of their career:

"BEAT THE CLOCK" (I still recall hearing this tune vibrating the walls of Trocadero as we paid to get in--pissed off that I was missing the chance to dance. This record has "ENERGY" to burn.)

    "TRYOUTS FOR THE HUMAN RACE"
    "WHEN I'M WITH YOU"
"THE NUMBER ONE SONG IN HEAVEN"
    "MODESTY PLAYS"
    "COOL PLACES"
    "WITH ALL MY MIGHT"
"MUSIC THAT YOU CAN DANCE TO"
    "DANCE GODDAMIT"

allmusic reviews "The #1 In Heaven" LP:

It may not have been the most natural match in music history, but the marriage of Sparks' focus on oddball pop songs to the driving disco-trance of Giorgio Moroder produced the duo's best album in years. From the chart hits "Number One Song in Heaven" and "Beat the Clock" to solid album tracks like "La Dolce Vita," No. 1 in Heaven surprises by succeeding on an artistic and commercial level despite the fact that neither the Mael brothers nor Moroder tempered their respective idiosyncrasies for the project. Moroder's production is just as dizzying, chunky, and completely rhythm-driven as on his best work with Donna Summer, and the Mael brothers prove on "Tryouts for the Human Race" and "Academy Award Performance" that their bizarre songwriting wasn't compromised. — John Bush

    Au contraire, SD,

"Sussudio" was from Mr. Collins' solo career.

Serves me right for talking about stuff I don't know very well marky! Sorry Quinny, I'll go back to talking about disco which I do know slightly more about! (although I think I got Delegation mixed up with Kandidate not long ago- I think my brain's due for an overhaul; I think I'm getting to my mid-life crisis :( )
