How important was rubber to the develoment of disco music?

I've seen quite a few articles claimbing that without rubber the whole disco movement wouldn't have got off the ground - especially in the USA. Would you say this is true or was wood more instrumental in getting the disco ball rolling?

A disco ball and a similar sized rubberband make a great slingshot!

In a sense, rubber was quite important, Leatherman -
Before direct-driven turntables were the norm for DJs, the trusty (rubber) belt drives were all the rage! Imagine slip-cuing on a transcription deck!!!!!

very funny forrrce, I don't think I would have enjoyed DJing if it wasn't for the change... (mixing) it would have been such a hassle. :P

    Rubber Discovery

If it wasn't for the Belt Drive Turntable of my former BSR Quanta 500 Turntables, I wouldn't be the DJ that I am today.

Upgrading to Technics was a beautiful thing!

Where's the 8-Track Player when you need one

Hey, didn't one of the prominent early DJs use "carts" behind the booth? Carts were a variant of 4/8 track cartridges, and were widely used in radio until recently. I seem to recall reading that this is how the whole counting BPMs thing came about...

    Rubber ?

I think latex rather than rubber was important, along with wood...

Maybe if more rubber had been used we wouldn,t have lost some our artists, writers and producers as early as we did.

I don't know how you meant this but I find it a little offensive. I've buried far too many friends at too early an age. To dismiss their deaths or any artist, writer, producer, over 'lack of use of a condom' is disgusting and disrespectful. Sorry, I don't want to get the joke.

Hey Leatherman. Were you yankin' my bologna or was there really an article pertaining to disco and rubber? I really didn't know where to go with this.

Likewise NickNack.I wasn't demeanimg or disrepecting anyone I simply stated the obvious.I bemoan the fact that we lost all these great people because some didn't excercise caution. We are not talking about unintelligent people. It was and still is a tragic thing that happened and continues to happen. And the facts are that it continues to happen because people are irresponsible. If you took it as me trying to be flippant I apologize.Frankly I don't know what the hell this thread had to do with disco.

You can't take precautions against something you don't know exists. AIDS/HIV was not identified until 82 or 83, by which time thousands of people had already been infected.

No problem, OBM. I've chilled a little since writing that post and I'm glad to see you werent' cracking wise. In today's time your statement has a ring of truth since practicing unsafe sex is just plain irresponsible. But, back then, who knew? The worst we all thought could happen was that you get a case of some treatable VD. No one thought he was putting his life in danger by playing fast and loose in the sexual circus. There but for the grace of God...

As far as this thread pertaining to disco, only Leatherman knows for sure.
