I'm sure that ya'll are huge disco lovers on this forum, but ya gotta be listening to other music to I guess??

So what is your current favorite non-disco music?

my favorite tunes currently in heavy rotation are:

    * Princess Superstar! her new and previous album. Dirty ass whooping lyrics, and fanastic musical diversity (no ordinary hiphopbeats)

    * Darker Than Blue - Soul from jamdown 1973 -1980 > a fantastic compilations on 'Blood and Fire' reggae label. With reggae versions of old soul classics like slipping into darkness, ain't no sunshine, etc...

    * Royksopp - fine scandinavian mix of downbeat and housy music with a twist

    * Felix tha housecat - Kittenz and thee glitz

    Whooha! its elektro revival! finally.

    * Bedrock Breaks - compiled by DJ Hyper

a fine collection of UK Nu-breaks

    * and finally: Various Drum&bass mixtapes in my car stereo, makes driving like a videogame. Try to find this one on audiogalaxy: Nicky Blackmarket with Shabba D, MCMC, 5ive-O, Foxy, GQ live @ One Nation. OOH! it's HEAVY! Not for the weak-hearted.

So that's it. whats your non-disco pick of the moment? And please don't tell me its that nu-metal or fake-punk ****!

On Sunday nights, I listen to the Doo Wop Shop on CBS-FM (NY).

I love early-mid 70's singer/songwriter music. Elton John, John Denver, Carly Simon, Carpenters, America, Wings, Chicago, Eagles. I love Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album.

I also love 70's AM pop, especially the "Have a Nice Day" CD sets.

Late 70's-Early 80's soft rock as well. Enjoy some 60's pop, particularly Mama's and the Papa's.

Today, I brought the new John Mellencamp, ("Cuttin' Heads"), B.B. King with Eric Clapton ("Riding With The King"), Amel Larrieux (Groove Theory) solo, Level 42's "Best", Matchbox Twenty's "Mad Season" and Sergio Mendes & Brasil'66's "Fool On The Hill".

Recent purchases have included the most recent Garbage, R.E.M., Mick Jagger, Lenny Kravitz, and my fave of the bunch-- Ben Folds' "Rockin' The Suburbs" (if you like Todd Rundgren/Joe Jackson melodic pop/rock--buy this!!!)

Also, Jane Monheit & Shakatak & Manhattan Transfer ("Spirit Of St. Louis") in the Jazz vein.

In the R&B vein, I bought a Blue Magic Greatest Hits, a James Brown "Live in Augusta, GA" CD, and several compilations of early '70's black disco. Oh, and the new Angie Stone for that O'Jays sampled cut and the Live Sade.

I listen to all types of stuff, as you can see. That's what I can remember off the top of my head.

    Next!

Well, I recently picked up the new Pet Shop Boys disc, which by the way, is totally not dance at all. Not quite sure what to make of it at this point... but there's a song that alludes to Eminem being gay on it. Gotta love that.

Anyway... I also listen to "Berlin School" electronic (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze) as well as other 70s electronica like Tomita and Wendy Carlos. Also like Ambient stuff quite a bit. A bit of classical here and there, like Debussy, Ravel, and Tchaikovsky. Occasionally some "intelligent" (for lack of a less ridiculous term) rock, like Supertramp, Yes, Rush....

At any given moment I can be listening to just about anything, thus the name Sam "ALL JAM". I love classic Soul (Intruders, Enchantment, O'jays etc.), Funk (Ohio Players, Slave, Brass Construction etc.) and Disco from the '70's. The classic Garage/Club sound (Prelude/Sam records etc.)of the '80's. I also love deep soulful house, hip-hop and R&B from the present.

Like RU from Montreal I also love Acid Jazz. I think because of the experimenting and fusion of sounds since my tastes varies. The Groove Collective is great along with such compilations as:

The Dorado Compilation or Dorado Gold Sessions on the Instinct label and

    Giant Steps/Volume 1.

I also really dig Jamiroquai, Swing Out Sister, Paul Hardcastle, Greg Osby etc. because they are artists who break the norm, do what they feel and it all sounds good which is what I strive to do as a DJ bringing music to the masses.

    Easy,

    Sam "ALL JAM"

Today, I just finished listening to the last R.E.M. release "Reveal"; now, I've got Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66's "Fool On the Hill" playing (Love that title track & the "Scarborough Hill" cover--this group defined "cool" IMHO); also, Beth Orton's "Trailer Park"; Jill Scott's "Who Is Jill Scott? ( yeah, Paul, I'm STILL trying to understand the Jill cult); Paul Simon's "You're The One", and Barbra Streisand's "Timeless: Live In Concert" cause, well... ya know, "I'm of a certain persuasion" and a "certain age" and we were indoctrinated to love the DIVA!!!!!!!

I'm curious, 'Kevin Toney - Lovescape', is that the same Kevin Toney who was an original member of the Blackbyrds?

    Nicky,

Ah, you're listening to the Dusty Springfield "It Begins Again": what do you think of the "Dusty Goes Disco" track "That's The Kind Of Love I've Got For You"???

This did chart in the lower echelon of the Billboard Disco Top 40, to my surprise. Playing it again, recently, I was surprised by how "disco" it was. I particularly loved 2 cuts on this LP, both ballads: "Turn Me Around" & "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love".

The other one on your list that I have strong feelings for is Leon Huff's "Here To Create Music". Troc DJ's played "I'm Not Jivin', I'm Jammin'" a lot for it's jazzy vibe and the beautiful "No Other Love" is a another great track.

    Hi Sam,

And, yes, he is one and the same. "Lovescape" was unavailable for quite some time so I'm glad the label put it back out there.

I like this cut and you're right, it was "very disco" for her. There was an earlier version by Rita Jean Bodine, 1974 or 1975, that's a bit stronger even though I've only seen it on 45. More synthesized and the build up of tempo and her voice is awesome. This lp by Dusty is on CD, complete and with a bonus track of the 12" version of "That's The Kind..." It's remastered but I wished they had pumped up the 12".

I love this lp and was lucky enough to get it on one of those "2 for 1" cd's. (Norman Harris is the other album on the same CD.) "No Greater Love" is an extroadinary piece. Stevie W. on harmonica lends a finishing touch. For me, I would open my night with "Your Body Won't Move, If You Can't Feel The Groove". The lineup: Teddy Pendergrass, O'Jay's, Jones Girls, McFadden & Whitehead. This funky little number just gets me swayin'. Every time Teddy screams I just want to.... well, never mind.

BTW - You're in my head again.
