    Philly Sound

I see many people here make their own CD compilations and now I started to make mine... That way I can put in order material of compilations I bought in the past, plus some hard-to-get items I found in the web. I will list them so you can reccomend me other songs for a possible new volume of the series.
I start with this "Philly Sound 1968-1979" I completed a week ago. Most of these are single edits, due to the fact that I already have the Tom Moulton mixes in the "Philadelphia Classics" CD.

1-JOHNNY MATHIS - Life is a song worth singing
2-DELFONICS - La la la means I love you
    3-DELFONICS - Didn't I blow your mind (this time)
    4-SPINNERS - I'll be around
5-SPINNERS - Could it be I'm falling in love
    6-O'JAYS - Backstabbers
    7-O'JAYS - Love train
    8-INTRUDERS - I'll always love my mama
9-PHILADELPHIA ALL STARS - Let's clean up the ghetto (8.18)
    10-MFSB - TSOP
    11-MFSB - K-Jee
12-PEOPLE'S CHOICE - Do it any way you wanna
13-HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES - If you don't know me by now
14-HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES - Don't leave me this way
    15-THE TRAMMPS - Disco Inferno
    16-FIRST CHOICE - Doctor Love (7.34)
    17-MCFADDEN & WHITEHEAD - Ain't no stopping us now (7.07)

Pretty much the hits, of course... BTW, "I'll always love my mama" is one of my new faves, both in this version (6.36) and the Tom Moulton mix (close to 10 minutes).
Track producers: Thom Bell (1-5), Gamble & Huff (6-14), Norman Harris (15-16) and of course M&W on the last one.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

The Tom Moulton mix of "I'll Always Love My Mama" is on the "Philadelphia Classics" LP & CD.

At first glance, this nine-track album looks like an unethically slim greatest-hits survey of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's biggest early- to mid-'70s Philly soul classics. Look again, though, because it turns out to be something entirely different. Originally released as a double LP in 1977 and combined onto a single CD (with the addition of the bonus track "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by People's Choice), these are not the familiar original versions, but the extended 12" dance mixes. Indeed, the nine songs add up to 76 minutes, including whoppers like an 11-minute-and-30-second "Love Is the Message" by MFSB, an 11-minute-and-three-second "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, a nine-minute-and-43-second "I Love Music" by the O'Jays, and a nine-minute-and-44-second "I'll Always Love My Mama" by the Intruders. The idea for the album originated with Harry Chipetz, general manager of Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, who suggested that Tom Moulton do a mix of a Gamble & Huff track (which turned out to be "Do It Any Way You Wanna"). Moulton subsequently did a whole double album's worth of extended mixes of Gamble & Huff productions. It's not what the average fan looking for a Gamble & Huff best-of should get; you're better off with the standard versions (indeed all but one of the "regular" versions, along with other big Gamble & Huff hits not worked over for Philadelphia Classics, are on the Philly Super Soul Hits compilation). Dance fans will eat up the extended grooves and instrumental passages here, though. Even non-dance specialists will enjoy the variations if they're Philly soul specialists, due to the chance to hear the trademark Gamble & Huff intricate funk-pop-disco mix in a more elongated, elastic setting. The CD reissue includes liner notes by Moulton, which confusingly refer to the People's Choice's "Do It Any Way You Wanna" extended mix as having been issued, although according to the track listing it was previously unreleased. — Richie Unterberger

Ouch! My "Philadelphia Classics" CD doesn't have the remix of "Do it any way you wanna". Only 8 tracks. And there's no liner notes either. In fact, the credits -including writers, producers and arrangers of each track- doesn't mention Moulton... but I'm sure we're talking about the same record (in fact, there was discussion about the Moulton mixes on this forum some time ago).
My CD edition has the catalogue number ZK 34940 and the PIR logo, but it was released obviously by CBS (now Sony).

New 2002 release: EK 85940, Epic/Legacy music. No PIR logo or Classic Philly cover on this one. The picture shows a sea of people in a large, oh-so-chic (54?) club. Everything is shaded in hues of red. When you take the CD out to play it you see the same picture is there in black & white. The crowd seems to be in business attire --- guys in suits and ties :o . No clear shots of the ladies. Guess they werent' hanging out in The Village. :P
