Best From Artist 55 - The Commodores

One of my favorite bands. Their 1977 show at The Hartford Civic Center proved to me they just as good live as they are recorded in a studio. OK, so it didn't hurt that cannabis filled the air and my date was foine  Anyway they did an awesome job with "Zoom" and the entire audience seemed to get into that song with the same rhythm. In fact "Zoom" is my choice for "Best." OK, for pure on the floor groove, "Brickhouse" was the ****. As for ballads, "Just To Be Close To You" is a classic. I just love that intro.

I have to agree with you on Zoom a very polished and awesome ballad. Brick House.... is pretty much played out... however, I like it when I have 15 drinks :D ...

    favorite cuts:

    Oh No
    Sail On
    Lady, You Bring Me Up
    Night Shift
    Sweet Love
    Wonderland

To me "Night Shift" is one of the best ballads of the 80s, and definetely proved that the group still could cut it without Lionel.

I also like "Fire Girl" and X-rated movie" from the "Natural High" album of 1978.

    "Brick House"
    "Lady (You Bring Me Up)"
    "Easy"

By the way, I finally made it to gold status here in case anyone has noticed.

I was never a big Commodore fan however I found a liking/favorite to "Machine Gun". As far as Lionel's solo hits, it would be "Love Will Find A Way". I NEVER liked :x :x "Brick House". Everytime I hear it on the radio, I turn the channel in a quickness :x !

Efunk - 15 DRINKS????????????? :o :o :o Heck I may like "Brick House" too after all those drinks. I'll even think that Lionel Ritchie is the most gorgeous man that I've ever seen          !!!!!!!!!!

Paul, The intro is tight but after about a minute... It gets boring... Also, remember it wasn't the first single released off the LP... Easy was the first single... plus the radio stations were already playing the song... (R&B stations as an LP cut) then by the time they released it as a single... it was already played out. Reaching #5 Pop, #4 soul.

On Nov. 5, 1977 here was the top 10 songs for it's peak week.

    1. You Light Up My Life - Debbie Boone
    2. Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon
    3. Boogie Nights - Heatwave
    4. That's Rock 'N' Roll - Shaun Cassidy
    5. Brick House - Commodores
    6. It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me - Barry White
    7. I Feel Love - Donna Summer
    8. Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal Gayle
    9. Baby, What A Big Surprise - Chicago
    10. Heaven On The 7TH Floor - Paul Nicholas

In all honesty, I know you and Delight are right efunk. They really did kill Brick House.
Seeing your top 10 list reminds of another song I don't want to hear any time soon, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue - Crystal Gayle." I used to work part time at a general store similar to the one Trovolta worked in in SNF. The owner kept the radio on a top 40 station and I swear I would hear that song every stinkin' hour :x

I'm a BIIIIIIIIG fan of the Commodores especially their 1970s work. My main interest is their funky music but like their ballads too but love their funky stuff the best. Ok "Brick House", I liked the song, good funk but not my alltime favourite Commodores funk song. Anyhow here's my favourites, starting with the ballads:

    This Is Your Life 1975
    High On Sunshine 1976
    Easy 1977

    Their funky stuff:
    Keep On Dancing 1969
    Rise Up 1969
    Are You Happy 1973
    Don't You Be Worried 1973
All of their tracks from their 1974 Machine Gun LP (it is SUPERB!!!!! :D )
    Slippery When Wet 1975
    Wide Open 1975
    Cebu 1975
    Let's Get started 1976
    Thumpin' Music 1976
    Come Inside 1976
    Fancy Dancer 1976
    Squeeze The Fruit 1977
    Too Hot Ta Trot 1977
    Brick House 1977
I Like What You Do 1978
    Flying High 1978
    Midnight Magic 1979
    All The Way Down 1980
    Got To Be Together 1980
Lady (You Bring Me Up) 1981

Ahhh, Funky. I finally got an artist you can respond to :D
I must be getting better at this. A few weeks ago Boodi and Bernie posted.
Anyway who can blame you for liking this band. I just wish you had a chance to see them in concert. I know you would have loved it.
I have their two back to back albums from '76 and '77, "Hot On The Tracks" and "Commodores." Both thoroughly enjoyable albums. I highly reccomend them to those unfamiliar with these men or only know them for "Brick House."

How anyone couln't like Brick House is beyond me. Even after a zillion plays it is still the one record of theirs that brings a smile to my face. An ALL TIME CLASSIC!!!!!
    Put me down for:
Machine Gun (this broke them in the UK, still a fave)
The Bump (almost a fun record, great to bump to)
Slippery When Wet (what a nagging, sinuous, funky sound)
Easy(classy smoocher with beautiful Guitar solo and fantastic horn dynamics)

Otherwise, even though I loved the above, a lot of their earlier material sounds badly played and lumpen to my 51 year old ears.

Totally agree!! It's just that I'm too lazy to type it out myself!!

It was one of the first records that I got into when I first got into that MAGICAL DISCO SOUND!! And this record has stayed a firm favourite ever since!

    Paul:
All I can say is that last time I decided to give their early material a spin (something I was looking forward to after 25 years without a listen) I was really quite shocked at how untogether they sounded on lots of tracks. So much so, that the LPs are back in the attic. So I can't really name any particular tracks off the top of my head. Sorry.
With older, more experienced ears and with my recording engineer hat on, I'd have told them to go for better takes on a lot of it. It wouldn't pass muster with any engineer/producer today, even allowing for live playing. Even the local artists I deal with are tighter than they were on some tunes.
Perhaps musicianship has improved over the years?

OK...I guess without specifics Quinny, we can't play the back and forth banter game :(
I'd be hard pressed to agree however that musicianship has improved over the last 20 or 30 years.

Those measurements are pretty close to mine maybe an inch or two off 8) . But when I hear the term "brick house", I think of a larger woman like 40-29-44 (size 14?) she's not slender or fat she's more buxom/big boned or whatever.

I didn't like Lionel Ritchie during the 80's - "All Night Long"
good grief :x too wishy washy!!! "Hello" was okay.

HustleBaby: Touche. I take your point. I was just defending Brick House as strongly as our Donnarettes worship their diva.
BTW: 36 - 24 - 36 What a winning hand!!!!!!!!! They knew what they were writing about when they came up with that line. A woman's slender waist is what makes 'em so special to hold (even if they aren't that particular size). Yum, Yum.
