New Book Compilation of Dance/Disco Charts

I just received information that Joel Whitburn has published a book compiling the Dance/Disco charts from Billboard Magazine from 10/26/74 through 7/5/03.

I have read posts requesting old Billboard Disco charts. This may be of interest to those of you who want data on disco songs charted on Billboard. This book lists each artist and the songs in chronological order. Also all kinds of info on each song and how it did on the chart.

The book is over 350 pages and is available from Amazon

I do not have any relation with Whitburn but I do utilize some of his books and have since 1971.

Yes, this most anticipated and long delayed book is finally gonna be published in November. They are accepting pre-release orders now for the discounted price.

It will be interesting to see how they compiled the info since the early charts are from NY and occasionally various other cities. It doesn't become a national chart until the summer of 1976

    The Book blurb:

Absolutely Dance-tastic! — The First Complete History of Billboard's "Dance/Disco" Chart!

From Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye" to Madonna's "American Life," Joel Whitburn's Hot Dance/Disco 1974-2003 lists every one of the over 3,800 artists and over 8,000 hits that appeared on Billboard's national "Dance/Disco Club Play" chart from its inception on October 26, 1974 through June 28, 2003.

Our first Dance book is the first of its kind anywhere. Only Hot Dance/Disco 1974-2003 shows you:

o All charted titles, album cuts - even complete albums that made the Dance chart in their entirety.
o Re-recordings, covers and remixes of Pop chart hits that made the Dance chart.
o The many import-only records that helped give the Dance chart its distinctly Euro flavor.
o The constant turnover at the Dance chart's top spot - with new #1 hits nearly every week helping to fuel the dance clubs' need for fresh music.

What's more, nearly ½ of the Dance artists and hits were entirely exclusive to the Dance chart, and never crossed over to the Pop, R&B or any other Billboard charts. So you'll find very few of these artists and hits listed in any other Record Research book.

Packed with Basic Chart Facts, Intriguing Info & Fantastic Features!

    • Peak chart position • Chart debut date • Total weeks charted • Original label and number • Total weeks at #1 or #2 • RIAA Platinum/Gold certification • Re-entries (recharted singles), Instrumental singles or other special types of singles are indicated with a symbol

Most hits listed are 12-inch vinyl singles (still the dance club DJs' favorite format for scratching); howver, special notations next to label numbers indicate promotional releases, 12" imports and album cuts.

    • All remixes are indicated • Artist's peak year of chart popularity is shown • Biographical information is shown for nearly every artist • Accurate, well-researched bios for major artists and groups show birth and death dates, group lineups, previous group affiliations, movie appearances and much more • Informative title notes indicate guest artists, notable songwriters and producers, samples and cover versions of earlier Pop hits, and more • The biggest chart hit of any artist with 5 or more hits is underlined • The Top 3 or 5 hits of every artist with 10 or more charted hits are listed right below the artist's bio • All #1 hits are marked with an easy-to-spot #1 symbol • All Top 5 hits are shaded • Hot streaks of 5 or more consecutive Top 10 hits are highlighted.

    Plus These Special Sections:

    • Complete A-to-Z Song Title Section • All-Time Top 200 Artists Ranking • Pictures of the Top 50 Artists • A-to-Z Top 200 Artists Listing • Top Artist Achievements • Artists with the Hottest Hit Streaks • Top Hits & Record Breakers • #1 Hits in Chronological Order

    Why thanks Greg!!! :D

I guess the actual weekly charts won't be there...just the stats for each song. But that will be fun to see everything that charted in a concise little list by artist.

I have the R&B book by these people and it is FABULOUS!!!!! I refer to it constantly.

Is the R&B book still available?

Looks like I'll have to dig deep into my pocket for both!

Yep, they have books on all the different Billboard charts in hardcover (some in paperback, also). The R&B book is certainly still available--it was around $60, if I remember correctly.

    Book

I don't think charts will be in the book. The summary of chart action by each song will be, but not the actual charts.

No, I realize it's just a summary by artist....but it lists the peak chart position and the date...by artist....and usually has a song section in the back by title alphabetically. This is handy when you are looking for songs--but don't know the artist.

The charts themselves can be obtained..if you know the RIGHT people. Or so I've been told.

    Not useless...

    Hey Marky:

Come on. You have helped many of us to discover many obscure disco titles.

You are not useless and you will always be very usefull because you have opened our eyes for those Bilboard disco charts. By the time you started typying I had already forgotten the charts and then you started to type it and we have rediscovered many "One Hit Only" disco artists.

    Thank you so much,

    Cheers,

    R Hessel
