    Back To My Roots

Marcio started a cover versions thread last week on the Board.

Last night I played Lamont Dozier's original version of Back To My Roots - a truly uplifting record 8). Odyssey had a great success with a great (IMHO) discofied cover version.

But - in my record collection I have another version of this tune.

    Who is it by??? :-?

    Sorry to disappoint you, Stan!

That's not the one I have got! But full marks to you - that is version of Back to My Roots that I didn't know about ...

The group that recorded the version I have were definitely a bit on the Latin side! They were hot!

Was going to say Linda Clifford but that doesn't tie in with your use of the word "group". Anyway, she did it last year.

I was going to say Richie Havens.

Wow, Fania All Stars, now that's a name I haven't heard for some years!

BTW if you haven't heard Richie Havens you'll love it, another classic version. I used to have a promo with Lamont Dozier on one side and Richie Havens on the other, what a record!

The FPI Project's 'Rich In Paradise' (before they spoilt it by putting the vocal over the top), was an anthem at The Hacienda during the Rave period. I remember being stood in there (off my face!) talking to a friend in one of the alcoves when the piano breakdown came in. I noticed that while he was still talking to me my friend (who was from Manchester, I was living in London at the time) raised his hand in the air. I then noticed that everyone else in the alcove had raised their hands, and as I looked around me I was amazed to see that everyone in the entire venue was doing the same. It was perhaps the most unified moment I can recall within a club.

The 'Rich In Paradise' piano break was surely influenced by the Richie Havens piano intro (the Havens version being much more uptempo than the original).

    CORRECT!!! :P :P :P :P

I think the LP was out in around 1981 and theirs was a fine jazzy sassy version of Going Back to My Roots. Worth checkin' out their version of Sausolito on the same LP as well ....

Don't think I know of the Ritchie Havens version, Greg.
