    Earth, Wind & Fire

Saw Earth, Wind & Fire in Concert at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Ct. Friday night :D

What can I say about the vibrance of their sound!?
Excellence does not even begin to describe the music they've given us over these past thirty years. And to see and hear it live :D :D

Verdine White's energy is still amazing, he was all over the stage and the floor dancing and playing bass. Even danced
on stage with women from the audience.

Philip Bailey's wife Crystal provided the female vocals for a really rockin' "Boogie Wonderland" which absolutely rocked the house down :D :D :D

A fabulous concert by possibly the greatest R&B group of all time!

    I've been a fan for thirty years and I know why :D :D :D

Was it the original line-up? I heard there were different line-ups (all missing some people from the gold era) during the 80's and 90's.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Wonder if dedicated Thatcherite, Phil Collins sleeps well after dragging the Phoenix Horns through court on account of 'having overpayed' them half a million bucks nearly 20 years previously.

Didn't know anything about this. Was this because of the collaboration with Philip Bailey or something else?

    NickNack,
Just looked for a piece to show you and found that Donald Myrick was shot dead at 53 by The LAPD in 1993, something I didn't know.
Anyway, here's a short on the Collins case, which was covered on the national news here. Collins' big 1981 LP was mentioned a lot in the features and I assumed the debt stemmed from that - though according to this short article, it was incurred by a more recent engagement.

    TIGHTWAD PHIL SUES BAND

Rock legend Phil Collins is suing two of his former musicians for more than $1 million, saying he overpaid them.

But the surprise litigation has been frowned upon within the music industry and described as "unnecessary greed" as Collins is worth a staggering $215 million.

In a London High Court writ, Collins claims trumpet players Michael Davis and Louis Satterfield were paid on a "mistaken basis" from the star's 1990 world tour.

Collins said they were told they would each get 0.5 percent royalties on sales of a CD recording of the tour.

The CD contained 15 live recordings, but Collins claimed the two musicians played on only five.

His writ said "The two should have been paid five-fifteenths of a half a percent of the suggested retail price of the record."

"They were paid royalties...on the mistaken basis they had performed on 15 recordings instead of five. Mr Collins is seeking restitution of the money on the basis that it was paid through a mistake of fact."

As far as I know, Collins won the case. What an arsehole!

The original players still active are Verdine White, Phil Bailey and Ralph Johnson. Gary Myers and one or two other guys have been with the band 10 years or more. Maurice White stopped traveling with the band 9 or 10 years ago. He's about 61 - 62 years of age and has a chronic debillitating illness of some kind (I believe this helped influence his decision to quit the road). A truly remarkable talent :D

Forrrce, this confirms my long-held opinion of Phil Collins being a total ****. He's one of those people that one takes an instant dislike to to save time!

If he could just let go of his Mistress's thatch, he'd have deserted the UK as he pledged to do if Labour ever came to power.

I see Puff Daddy and a load of tuneless banshees recorded a Phil Collins tribute LP some time back. I don't get the fascination or adoration - what has Collins ever done for black music for its fans? Maybe he'd like to take us all to court - though I'd rather lead him to the gallows!

Couldn't agree more F. The bald one was always bleating on about how he loved black music & how it influenced him - how exactly? His abysmal cover of You Cant Hurry Love per chance? I know taste in music is so subjective but there are some 'artistes' whose appeal really does mystify me i.e. Chris Deburgh, Ice T, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Lionel Richie, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, Oasis, Missy Elliot, Macy Gray, David Gray (are they related?), geez the list goes on & on. It really annoys me that so many acts get hyped & sell zillions whilst so many brilliant disco/soul/dance acts got/get so ignored & totally under-rated. Sorry to rant but I feel better for sharing that with u guyz/galz.

    Hi Steely,

well, I woud not include LIONEL RICHIE on a "hate" list - I even like his "fluffy" 80's music  . Guilty pleasure, that's it. And remember, the guy was one of the leaders of THE COMMODORES, how can you hate him? I can't. :D

But I h-a-t-e PHIL COLLINS, one of the worst pop composers ever - his pop melodies are uninspired and forgettable. He's a great drummer, an accomplished musician, but as a singer and a composer, he's weak. His ballads are so boring - "ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE"? Come on.

I heard somewhere that COLLINS asked his wife for divorce by FAX!!! Is it true?

I'm forgetting something: this topic's about EW&F, one of my favorite bands. One of the greatest pop bands of all time. Maybe mr. COLLINS can hear some of his old EW&F records to learn how GREAT POP MUSIC really sounds.

    Peace,

    zeca azevedo

Good to hear that EWF are still touring in some form but sad to hear the news on Maurice being ill, I just love his singing voice. He and Phil Bailey were the sound of EWF, not forgetting The Phoenix Horns as well.

Their music is still fabulous - even after all these years :D

Now if my sweetheart Donna Summer would give a concert that I could attend I could die a happy man :D

Come - on Donna; what about Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun?
Or even Turning Stone in New York?
Or any of the casinos in Atlantic City?

    Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire has that wonderful late 1970's, "Great to Be Alive!" sound. Their records were so upbeat...just incredible talent. The interesting thing about them though, is that for the large amount of air play their music had back then they seemed to have very few 12 inch singles produced of their records. Most of their material was sold almost exclusively on LP's or 7" 45's. Boogie Wonderland I think was an exception, which I have with September being the flip.

Here's some of what I have by them. Does seem rather skimpy, considering their output:

    1979: BOOGIE WONDERLAND 9:21 b/w Instrumental 6:16
    1980: AND LOVE GOES ON 4:06 b/w (Same) 3:38
    1981: LET'S GROOVE 5:40 b/w (Same)
1981: LET'S GROOVE 'Special Remixed Holiday Version' 6:43 b/w (Same)
1982: FALL IN LOVE WITH ME 'Special Remixed Extended Version' 5:40 b/w (Same)
    1983: SIDE BY SIDE 5:56 b/w SOMETHING SPECIAL 4:24
1987: SYSTEM OF SURVIVAL (4 mixes)
1987: THINKING OF YOU (4 mixes)

Other than the 1987 pieces, all are promo copies. I switched record pools when I moved out of New York in '83. Not a good idea :( .
