Starting out collecting - any tips?

Hi folks, I've recently decided to restart collecting records, and want to build some disco into my collection. To be honest I'm not so familiar with disco apart from the more obvious classics, so anyone pointing me in the direction of some unrecognised gems would be much appreciated.
I'm also unsure of the best place to pick up records. I'm looking to pick up some bargains hopefully - although I realise that I'm gonna have to dig deep for some of the more sought after numbers. I've checked out ebay but as I've said I'm not that familiar with the records. Where do I start?!
    Thanks

    Welcome,

I'm sure everyone here can help. Just tell us what type of sound / artists / labels you tend to favour.

Also check out the "Disco Records Vault A-Z" here at the site. Just click on the letters of the alphabet near the top of this page. All items have direct links to GEMM, which is the best place for used and rare records.

    Good luck.

Thanks Bernie, I'll check out GEMM. The stuff that I like the most is generally upbeat female vocal music (does that make sense?) so any recommendations would be welcome. I'll see what I can find in the vault.

Do you literally want to collect vinyl or do you just want to hear the sounds in any format? In theory you should be able to download most tunes off the net for free via p2p sharing. Rare tracks you will probably have to physically shop for. The main problem will be in identifying stuff you like. A tip (obvious but useful) I can pass on is to tape any radio or musical TV programmes, even when watching or listening to live, the number of times you get into a tune but miss the credits, but having it taped, rewind - and bingo you get all the details.

I'm looking to actually buy the vinyl, I stopped buying vinyl a couple of years ago due to restricted finances, but am getting into it again. Downloading is good because it gives access to loads of stuff, but you can't beat the feeling of actually having the record in your hands, with the picture sleeve and everything. At the moment my collection is about 300 singles and I want to expand it as much as possible - space and money permitting!

    Starting A Disco Collection

My advice is to have the full version. No 45 RPM for disco. If possible, get the 12 inch club version. If not, then the LP.

I still see used disco records at thrift stores and in flea markets and record conventions.

If you like to travel, the largest record convention is here in Austin every six months with the next taking place in late October.

They have a website and you can probably look them up under Austin Record Convention.

    I found them under

    austinrecords.com

There are sellers who can guide you toward what your taste in disco may be. Lots of vinyl is sold there. Look them up.

If you come into town, let me know and I can play some disco for you.
