    Welcome Peter

If you listen to 103.5 KTU than perhaps you may find disco venue clubs in Queens and Long Island. Joe Causi and other djs occasionally mention clubs that you maybe interested in. Just in case you happen to be in Manhattan, you may want to try Roseland (Sept 20 saturday 9pm-4pm) or Dancesport Studios (every monday 9:30pm-1am). Roseland has a combination of funk, disco and Motown while Dancesport plays strictly disco music and a few salsa songs (the music at Dancesport is ten times better than Roseland IMO).

    Hi PeterC,

Welcome to the board. We have a member here, 'The Lord of Flatbush', that has a connection with Joe Causi if I'm not mistaken, as well as being a working dj. Perhaps when he sees your post he can point you in the right direction. In the meantime, feel free to browse and check us out. Hope to see you in the forums.

    Hi Peter,

I did a quick google search and found these. Might help you out:

    http://www.newsday.com/entertainment...clublist.story

The above link has a listing of clubs in Long Island and Queens.

This link, www.lidance.org, connects to a group known as NY Dance Connection. If nothing else it could give some good leads.

    Thanks for your reply HustleBaby.

Sounds like I might want to give Danceport a shot. Where is it located, and, how is it to park my car around there?? I have Florida license plates. LOL?

heard on KTU... Polly Ester's, but they gave no location. How's that place?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Nicky,

    Many thanks for your reply.
Yeah, I'll stick around in this forum for sure. The entire site is very well done. I do have a problem with web-based forums since I am in a temporary location (on the backside of Belmont Racetrack) and I am on a phoneline. (it moves kinda slow)

A little intro if I may..
I was fairly active in the dance club circuit back between '70 and '80. I started off in the disco scene as a dancer. My girlfriend and I won every major dance contest in the tri-state area between '73 and '76 including the $3,000 contest at "RumBottoms" (on L.I.) . I left NY in 1982, and never been back until now. The first club that gave me a job (as a DJ) was "Seconds" on Queens Blvd. The boss moved me up to his other club in New Rochelle "The second Floor", and there I stayed for several years, then it was off to Hawaii ("Spats" Waikiki Beach) for 2 years after that.

Back in those days…. John Travolta didn't nothin' on me…. hahaha.

But then he kicked my butt with the movie… "Saturday Night Fever"!! Everyone stopped doing the hustle and started dancing "at" each other instead of "with" each other.

Again thanks for helping out this ole timer.

DanceSport is on 60th street and Broadway. I would suggest that you park your car on Columbus or Amsterdam aves because you will have hell trying to find a space on B'way and Central Park West. And they are doing a mass amount of construction at Columbus circle so you may want to take the "iron horse" ugh :o I forgot that you're coming from Long Island :o . It's every monday from 9:30pm - 1am $7.00

Polly Esther's is in the West Village, I don't remember the exact street but I usually take the A train to West 4th st. From what I remember (I've been there once), Polly's music is a combo of 70's and 80's and a few movie soundtracks and broadway tunes like Grease. If its hardcore disco & hustle that you seek, Polly Ester's may not be the place for you. They have a groovy decor, memorablia and drinks with a 70's theme.

There's a club on west 22cd street called Flamingo's that is advertised on KTU which features a disco theme show called The Donkey Show. I know the show is $45 and the after party is $15 I'll get some more info later.

    Thanks for the info HustleBaby,

Monday night eh?, I'll try to give Danceport a shot NEXT Monday. If they steal my car, can you give me a ride home?

    Thanks for the info NickNack,

The more I search, the more I realize the "hustle crowd" dosen't seem to congregate in one special place. The disco theme clubs seem to be spotty and spread out. I'll have to check some of these clubs out and use process of elimination.

Thanks again. The links are most helpful.

    Hi Peter

I hope your car dosen't get stolen because I don't have a car. Besides Elmont, L.I is out of my way so you would have to use the same transportation that I use - a taxicab or the "iron horse" .

    Where is Elmont?

    Hi Peter,

Glad to help. Hope you find one --- they did seem spread out but then, I don't know Queens/LI all that well.

Sounds like you and your lady had a lot of fun back in the day. Is she still your lady or should I leave that alone :D ?

You dj'd also? Excellent. At least you got in a little travel along with your gigs. I was stuck in New York, not that I minded, believe me.

Elmont.. is not far from the Queens / Nasau County borderline. Jamaica Queens is 5 minutes from here. It would take me only 20-25 minutes to reach the 59th st. bridge from here.

Well.. when do you go to Dance Sport, or where ever you go to listen to good Disco? I would be more than willing to go get you, and then go there.

Not sure if this is inappropriate or not, but I am a tad scared to go by myself. I don't know where the heck I'm going, and I'd be all alone at these places.

If you prefer to meet inside one of these places, that's fine too. Or, you can invite up to 4 more friends to ride with us.. My car holds 6.

YOU... or anybody else for that matter, can send me a private email if you wish.

    kp@gate.net

Thanks for anything you could do for me HustleBaby.

    Hi NickNack,

Thanks for your help. maybe next time you go to a good hustle spot you can let me know when and where, and I'll be there. I'll even pick you up as well. I'm a tad scared to run alone. Email me in private if you prefer.

Nope, me and the girlfriend split around 1978 or so, but I do have some fond memories.

    Running late for work.

    Hi Peter

I usually go to DanceSport every first monday of the month because that's when they have the largest crowd and the BEST dj spinning. They will be closed for Labor Day but I will definetely be there the following monday. We can meet inside by the dj's table. If you are the greatest dancer that you claim to be than that would be most helpful for me because I'm a beginner/intermediate hustler.

There is another place you should like called Steppin' Out. Every wednesday night from 9:30pm-1:00am they have hustle parties for $7. They also share the same dj as DanceSport. I might go tomorrow if its not raining. The address is 25th street between 5th & 6th aves. Its in a large brick building on the 9th floor so I'll get the exact building number for you.

Let me warn you that some of the women are okay but most of them act like divas  so you would know in advance. I know a few people in both of these studios
but a friend of mine (a regular) gave me the 411 on the divas. Most of the guys ONLY like to dance with girls that can keep up with them which is okay because there are a few guys that's patient enough give other women a chance. I just started going to the hustle parties back in May so maybe by next year, I can really get my hustle on with the professionals. Otherwise, the crowd is very mature and non-violent :D .Btw they have a snack bar if you get the munchies.

    Hi HustleBaby,

OK,,, I'll give it a shot. 25th between 5th and 6th. How is it to park that car around there and about what time do they get started? I have to be to work at 4:30 AM and I can't stay out that late. What I'll do is get a huge power knap tomorrow afternoon / evening.

About me being a hustle champion.. I went to a hustle club in Florida. The place was fairly crowded. Only thing was… they were all doing some strange step that I had never seen before. "This" hustle champ was nothing but a wallflower all night. I couldn't do the step they were ALL doing. I'll have to see what happened to the old step that I once knew. I showed my step to the hustle teacher and he looked at me like I had 3 heads. He said it might be an antique.

About the women being divas.. It kinda makes no difference to me. I am used to being rejected… I went bald at the age of 23. hahaha. How's your arithmetic? I was in my late 20's when I was the champ. That was in 1975. I am an old man now.

Actually, all I'm after is good old Disco music on a good sound system played by a good DJ, and to watch people dancing and having a good time. I don't drink much either.

OK,, try and get me the street address, and let me know where you think I can park the car. I heard there is NOWHERE to park a car in Manhattan.

Hey HustleBaby… Thanks for taking the time to help me out. If it wasn't for YOU… I'd be stuck. I'll buy you a drink tomorrow if we hook up. I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the only bald man standing as close to the DJ booth as I can get. Make sure you meet me. Don't leave me standing there all night with nobody to talk to.

My computer went down for two days so I was unable to leave you the correct address for Steppin' Out. I told you previously that it was on 25th street but its:
37 West 26th between 5th & 6th aves - 9th floor. On the corner of 26th and 6th ave, there is a parking lot with missing fences that is open to everyone. If you went and couldn't find the place I deeply apologize for that :( . I was there wednesday night however, I didn't see anyone that fit your description. It starts at 9:30pm ends at 1:00am for $7.00 - dress attire is very casual.

I will be at DanceSport on Aug 25th and Sept 8th - they will be closed on Labor Day. Remember DanceSport is every Monday for the same price, same attire and same time. Like I mentioned in an earlier post that parking in that area (60th & broadway) is LOUSY :x ! Get back to me.

P.S - 95% of the crowd at both studios do the latin hustle.

    Hi-Ya-Dune HustleBaby,

I found it. I had to call information and they gave me the address. I was there for about 30 minutes. Sorry I didn't get to meet you.

Yep, It is possibly the "Latin Hustle" everyone is doing today. Even in Florida. I'll bet that there aren't too many people that know that there are 2 different hustle steps. The original one is the one I used to win all those dance contests in 1972-75.

Unfortunately, My father had a small stroke back in Florida. I've got to leave town in a hurry. My mother is 81 and finding it hard to deal with the running around and the work around the house.

In any case, I'll still use this site and keep in touch. Perhaps I'll be back next summer, and you could be my Hustle teacher.

Many thanks for helping me out.

    PeterC.
