Whatever Happened to Hot Productions & Unidisc

In the early 90s these two companies released a bunch of classic disco on CD. Unidisc has a web site but seems their releases are few. Also, I've noticed that Wherehouse Music is reorganizing and closing a bunch of stores. Could Tower Records be next?

Unidisc have provided a great re-issue series for many years but I think they're probably running low on catalogues to acquire, or new oldies they can make a living out of. They still have an impressive inventory for a disco oldies-influenced label.

Hot can go to hell! :o - On a few occasions I've wasted money on their re-release and compilation CDs which boast they're cut 'from the original master tapes' - and when I listen through 'phones I can hear the suppressed crackles underneath. Crooks!

Tower UK only have their flagship store in London's Piccadilly Circus standing - I keep hearing they've been taken over by Virgin, so that explains the mainstream, unadventurous, chart-aimed CDs on display (fringe items like Japanese imports have disappeared. Thanks, you strumpet whores).

They also had the nasty habit of including shortened versions of the orginal album cuts. Happened with the James Wells and Celi Bee's Fly me on the Wings of Love album.

just because they used the original master tapes doesnt mean that youll get a perfect copy of the music. who knows how the orig. master tapes were kept all these years. i have a few cds from hot prod. and they sound very good, i pay attention to the "quiet" spots on each track to see if i hear any snap crackle and pops, so far so good.

I'm fairly confident that I can hear the difference between a degraded tape source and a record with suppressed noise. I do restoration for a couple of labels on occasion, so I have more than an idea of what a record sounds like close-up, if you like.

If Hot Productions think their customer base is cloth-eared enough to fall for the bull, they don't deserve my money. I don't like what I hear, you do - that's all.

The Best Of Montage Records, an Ingram family 2LP comp. and something else I'm trying to remember, but no more than those - they were enough.

One of the worst Cd's Hot Productions has release is The best of Venture Records, this has got to be the worst sounding Cd ever release by anybody. At least the copy I had.

Hot has a very annoying habit of saying that "Full-length" versions of songs are included in their compilations, BUT in reality, they are actually just faded out at a few seconds after the 5 minute point. Pisses me off!!!!!!

All the songs on certain compilations are like 5:02, 5:03, 5:04, etc. They just chop off anything after that!!!!!
