    Those white label re-edits!

What bugs me is when I buy a good sounding white label 12" that has interesting edits on it, some of the titles tend to remain a mystery. The last one I purchased was something called "It's a Peach Melba" that seems to point towards Melba Moore, only I don't know enough of Melba's cataloque to be certain. There's a chorus chanting Come Go With Me but it's not by the Pockets this tune. There's gorgeous strings too - what is this track, or rather what was it before the re-editors worked it over? Not that it's housefied beyond salvation though, it still sounds very credible all the way thru despite the obvious elongated breaks and the slightly fortified rhythm. Being no expert on vintage soul dance music it mortifies and infuriates me I spin records not knowing what they actually are! So, anyone know what "it's A Peach Melba" actually is?

In certain cases, the re-edit bandits disguise the tracks in order to avoid the wrath (and writs) of the clueless major labels that own the rights to the originals - this seems to work.

I was out with a mate on Friday who's just bought this 12" from London's Vinyl Junkies store. He was under the impression that the edits were by Carl Craig. I'll see if I can get a listen.

I just spoke to the guy and he says it's 'Promised Land', the disco version of which is on the 'Dancing With Melba' album.

"Peach Melba" is a fancy-schmancy dessert and also the title of Miss Moore's 1975 LP (although "Promised Land " wasn't on it).

"Promised Land" was originally on "A Portrait Of Melba" (1978) then remixed and extended on the 1979 "Dancin' With Melba" LP--real good if ya don't have it.

    Track list ("Dancin" with..." :

    1. Standing Right Here (Carstarphen/McFadden/Whitehead)
    2. Free (Kipps)
    3. Play Boy Scout (Ferrer)
    4. Promised Land (Carstarphen/McFadden/Whitehead)
    5. Make Me Believe in You (Mayfield)
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

Ooo yes, I absolutely agree with Mark that the "Dancin' With Melba" is a great album, but so is the entire "Portrait Of Melba" album he mentioned. As I recall, this album had the first appearance of "Standing Right Here". I wore out the first side of this album which had Promised Land and Standing.

As an aside, when "Dancin' With Melba" came out, a companion album "Dancin' With Gladys" was suppose to come out on Buddah. I suspect that album was to include the Walter Gibbons remix of "It's A Better Than Good Time". Sadly, that album never showed up in the stores. Anybody have any idea what happened (I wonder if that was about the time Buddah went out of business?).

Thanks for the info on Melba!

Efunkadelic, this particular white label disc has "Moxie" printed on it plus those enigmatic/guiding "titles". Most white labels just seem to come with just that, a blank white label and nothing else. Sometimes store clerks in the know helpfully scribble artist names on little white stickers.

The White label vinyls often do provide you with an additional c. 3 minute rhythm track of each tune as well. My favourite one is a great version of John Gibbs "Trinindad" that clocks something like 6 minutes, plus the rhythm track. Whether one should actually buy these shady items is another matter entirely.
