Who was Billy Preston backing up when he first met The Beatles in the early 60's?
Billy did some touring in the 60's with Little Richard.... :-?
Was this at the same time he made contact with the Beatles ?

Nearly there!
Okay, another search and a call to a friend delivered this :
Not from memory but from the net so not really DM.com worthy.Hamburg - Royal Festival Hall - near the Planten und Bloomen on Karl-Muck-Platz. The locals call this the Musikhalle. The Beatles saw Ray Charles there once and at that time met Billy Preston.
Hope this is the answer you're looking for Greg !
Bingo!
Although it was at The Star Club that they met. A 15 year old Billy Preston was appearing in Little Richard's band. Later that year (1962) they met up again at the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton (opposite Liverpool on the River Mersey) where they once again appeared together (I was a two-year old toddler asleep in the next street as this was happening).
In 1968, George Harrison met up with Billy Preston again when he was touring as a member of Ray Charles's band. As a result of this meeting Preston began recording for The Beatles' Apple label, and performed on a number of tracks that would later be released on the 'Let It Be' album, including, of course, his famous solo on the 'Get Back' single, earning him the distinction of being the first musician to be credited on a Beatles record (The Beatles with Billy Preston).
