    Sly & The Family Stone

Here's a group that was solid from top to bottom. You would think a group like this would last for a long long time, but lost steam when Larry Graham left the band. :(

A well deserved induction into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 was long overdue... Anybody like this band?

    favorite cuts:

If You Want Me To Stay
    Family Affair
    Sing A Simple Song
I Want To Take You Higher

    Some faves of mine:

    'Loose Booty'
    'Better Thee, Than Me'
    'Smilin''
    'Sing A Simple Song'
    'Crossword Puzzle'
    'Trip To Your Heart'
'That's Lovin' You' (not quite Family Stone, though)
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?

    Hi,

you ask me if I like SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE... For me, it is one of the best musical groups of the 20th century, highly influential. No one can talk about SOUL or FUNK without mentioning SLY STONE and his gang. All the albums SLY recorded from A WHOLE NEW THING (1967) to HIGH ON YOU (1975, the first album credited to SLY STONE, solo artist) are great. STAND, THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON and FRESH are masterpieces, essential albums. Talking about essential things, SONY music released this year a double CD called THE ESSENTIAL SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, the best anthology of SLY's music ever released. 35 remastered tracks put together in chronological order on two middle priced CDs - a must buy for all SLY fans and everybody who's wanting to know the music this family did in the 60's and 70's.

BTW, since we're on a DISCO MUSIC site, does anyone here remember Ten Years Too Soon, the collection of DISCO remixes of SLY's best known tracks released in 1979? I confess that I didn't like the LP when I first heard it in the late 80's (a friend of mine, a fan of SLY, have a copy), but now I find it very interesting stuff. Of course, nothing can be better than the original versions of EVERYDAY PEOPLE and other songs, but this is one of the first remixes album released by a major artist and a major label. I think this LP is very rare, even if some of the remixed tracks appeared in compilations like CLUB COLUMBIA: A COLLECTION OF CLASSIC REMIXES CD series.

    Peace,

My all time favorite song by them is "Thank You(falettinme be mice elf agin)" from 1970. The bass playing of Larry Graham is unbelievable on this song. "There's a Riot Going On" is also a great lp.

Sly was known for pissing his fans off by showing up late for concerts but he was still revered in funk circles. 8)

You bet! Epic serviced dj's with a 3-Record Box Set, Special Limited Edition, 12" versions of the songs. Same versions as on the lp but sounding storm-system loud :D . The 12" set omits "This Is Love" from the album, probably because it's a slow number. I remember the crowds getting into "Dance To The Music" and "Everyday People" quite easily. It always irritated me that they didn't remix "I Want to Take You Higher". This to me was a song screaming to be re-worked for club play. So many disco 'club' hits in later years took people 'higher' you lose count.

Totally agree.Remixing that song should have been a no-brainer.Just reviewing the back cover of my Lp

To bring sly into the modernized sound of disco, certain sounds had to be added, some parts elongated, certain beats exaggerated. Some new tracks were added, including new drums, guitars, bass guitars, fresh handclaps, timbales, syndrums. The original horns and Sly's vocals were left as originally recorded. They were cleaned in the mixing stage, and you will hear shouts and licks that were never heard before
Different eyes see different things. Different hearts beat on different strings. But there are times for you and me when all such things agree...Rush
