    C.D THE SPIRIT OF PHILADELPIA

new[ish] c.d the spirit of philadelphia, that champions the artists/labels that went for the philly int sound 'big time' :P

    1/THE JONESES-WHO LOVES YOU
storming uptemo philly from the 1977 epic sessions

    2/GLORIA GAYNOR-THIS LOVE AFFAIR
in danger of starting to appear on too many compilations but dont let that put you off this is really great, quite overlooked at the time but getting loads of attention in the u.k now, surprisingly rare on u.s 7" and getting pricey on english[on that ugly plastic label :-? ]this record sounds better to me on vinyl as it has that ping pong ball 'pop, pop' that adds to the record but it dosnt come through on c.d,hey this record is even 'big' in my smalltown !

    3/THE FUTURES-STAY WITH ME
written and arranged by the gambles and huffs therefore only included because it was released on gamble records, awesome deep soul like vocals on this72 dancer worth the price of this c.d alone,AWESOME :P

4/THE MODULATIONS-YOUR LOVE HAS ME LOCKED UP
we're getting more and more up zecca azevedas alley!
class dancer from the modulations not on the album, was the b.side of i'm hoplessley in love with you

    5/REVELATION-WEVE GOT TO SURVIVE
    1975 revelation r.s.o album

6/THE INVITATIONS-LOOK ON THE GOOD SIDE
74 release on silver blue records quite obscure and had to be searched for even on release and when i first heard this in a club i thought it was teddy p,so did everyone!so if you like teddy p this is for you and a fantastic philly dancer to boot,so who was this teddy soundalike? the invitations lead singer in this period was none other than lew kirton!

7/BARBARA MASON AND THE FUTURES-MAKE IT LAST
another one enjoying a big revival in the u.k thanks to ian levine, barbra and the boys tear it up not really barbaras normal style but she sounds great like this

    8/JERMAINE JACKSON-GOOD FOR THE GANDER[UNRELEASED MOTOWN 1976]
amazing slice of unreleased disco written by norman harris and love committees ron tyson and it shows, jermaine belts it out " whats good for the gander mamma always told me,so good for the goose,so good so good" dont let this pass you by nicknack!

    9/LIITLE DOOLEY-[ITS GOT TO BE]NOW OR NEVER
the earliest cut on the c.d[72] classy mid tempo dancer

    10/DIANNE STEINBERG-ONE MORE TIME
more classy mid-tempo written by phil hurt and thom bell, read the sleeve notes to see who also plays on this song or perhaps its easier to say who dos'nt!

11/TOUCH OF CLASS-I LOVE YOU PRETTY BABY
class indeed from this underated group

    12/THE PHILLY DEVOTIONS-HURT SO BAD
one of the better known cuts off the c.d sounding great!

13/THE INVITATIONS-THEY SAY THE GIRLS CRAZY
slightly earlier release to track 6 again on silver blue and in the u.k always came 2nd to that release but 4 me just as good, again like the other release lew kirton sounding like teddy p but the backing is unusual as theyre so sixties sounding just like the dells [especially if you know it "run for cover"]and it works! what a thought the dells backing teddy p,well thats exactly what this sounds like 8)

    14/REVELATION-WHERE ITS WARM
more 75 r.so revelation with big soul vocals

15/TOUCH OF CLASS-I JUST CANT SAY GOODBYE
really lost out to the philly devotions version but just as good [great break :P ]

16/CHAREN COTTON-A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE
a perception release, pretty obscure too, used to be collected by the northern soul crowd for the fast b.side "take care of buisiness at home"
now fliiped over and this side gets the attention, you know the story husband always out leaving 'wifie' with the kids but she'll settle for a little love as its better than nothing at all, nice record

    17/NEW YORK CITY-HAPPINESS IS
    great philly floater from 73

    18/THE WHISPERS-WILL YOU BE MINE
massive radio spin for richard searling in englands north west and in the modern soul rooms too, infectious 74 dancer from the whispers

class compilations like this dont come every day if you like a slice of philly/soul/disco and great lyrics this is for you, file under ESSENTIAL :P

    Discodisk,

I don't know most of these but I know your head so I'll be taking a chance when the money is right. Question: Is "Hurt So Bad" the full length version? Because there's 18 tracks I'm thinking singles and I hate single versions.

    Discodisk:
How about the length of Gloria Gaynor's "This Love Affair" (from her wonderful but severely overlooked "Gloria Gaynor's Park Avenue Sound" album with Norman Harris and Ron Kersey arrangements)??? All the compilation/greatest hit CDs I've been able to find have only a short edited 3 to 4 minute version.

The album version is only 4:15 -- was there an extended mix of this very underrated track?

    Hi DISCODISK :D

you're right, big fella, this CD is simply fantastic. I'm wanting to put my dirty hands on it since it was released, and I think it won't be too long. This is probably the best PHILLY SOUL compilation ever released on CD. Who can complain with a record that includes classic tracks by MODULATIONS, JONESES, FUTURES, INVITATIONS (great group) and PHILLY DEVOTIONS? Not me! I'm looking for some of these musical nuggets for years! This is essential stuff for fans of 70's soul (us).

Thanx, DISCODISK for this topic. :D :D

    Peace,

    zeca azevedo
