Playlist for Remember the Party - Mighty Real Disco, October 9, 2011, at Dreamland

Dreamland turned out to be a dream for us to hold this year's Remember the Party! More details later. However, one of my favorite moments - I finally met REMICKS!!! Thankfully, Dreamland (aka City Nights) has alot of space - two stories worth, in fact. We were able to set up a station for the volunteers which also had snacks for the dancers and he found me there! Later in the evening, I was able to bring him up to the Sound and Light Station. When I went over to tell Jerry Bonham that he was here (after he was done mixing into the next song of course), Jerry yelled out, "Oh my Gawd!" and ran over to give Remicks a big hug!

We also looked for Bruno Republic. Barry Walters tried to point him out to us but the dance floor was too crowded for us to easily get to him. Later on, Barry told us BR already left. We were disappointed. However, the next night, when a few of the White Light Productions gang got together for dinner to compare notes and unwind a bit, Jerry brought a special guest. It was Bruno Republic himself!! Do I need to tell you there was a wealth of disco music information being tossed about that night. BR, how long were we at the restaurant? I think I finally found a parking space and arrived around 7:30??? Seems to me we were there until, would I dare say, 10 or 10:30 pm??? Nobody in our group is shy about talking! ;o)

What do you think was the very last song of the evening which was a Sylvester song and was very appropriate?

About that, yes. My hosts had already gone to bed by the time I got back. :) I learned so much that evening! I could've talked all night...

    Thanks again!

Here and on FB I read nothing but very positive reactions on this event. People came out enchanted and are still talking about it and that's so cool. And I already saw some pics and it looks like the replacement venue was very very OK! You guys have created a very special event and something to be proud of! Congrats for another highly successful edition.

Thank you keefelc for your kind words ! It was a pleasure to finally meet you too! As busy as you were that night , you were also a most attentive host and I appreciated it.
Dreamland is nothing like I remembered it - although my few times going there I could count on one hand . I enjoyed its many nooks and crannies and viewing balconies this night . Was a pleasure to meet Jerry too and to experience his work in action.

I plan to write a bit more here of my experience that night , but for now I just wanted to acknowledge the splendid time that was had.

Now, how late did you all party ??

I fizzled somewhere around three / three thirty so I did not hear the closing song by Sylvester which based on your clue was :

one pill makes you bigger , one pill makes you small = White Rabbit = Jefferson Airplane= SOMEBODY TO LOVE =

I need SOMEBODY TO LOVE Tonight

    ????

So much for the update I had planned on writing this weekend. Seems like time zipped by and it was Sunday evening already. Anyway, pictures are now being assembled and reviewed and will be up on the RtP website sometime in the near future! Something about the lighting in Dreamland, photos just seemed to have come out so much nicer. Probably because there was just so much more enhanced lighting all around the club.

The only downside to all the room in Dreamland was that you couldn't hear the music from the main floor very clearly in other areas of the club. So, I have to say I missed certain segments when I was running around the club. However, what I did hear more than compensated for the missed moments.

BR, we select that restaurant because they never hassle us as we sit and talk and talk and talk! I think one time we were there for 4 hours!

Johann, thanks for your kind remarks! We were nervous at first but we all ended up really enjoying this new space. Hope we'll see you folks sometime in the near future.

Remicks, thank you so much for spending so much time keeping me company and comparing notes. We actually finished shortly after you left - a little before 4 am. I actually was relieved we didn't go all the way until 6 am, and so was the club staff! ;o) There's only soooo much energy you can get from cookies and Hansen sodas. LOL!

BTW Remicks, that was some clever detective work on your part about the last song, too bad it's not correct!

Figures !!! I'm just too brainy for my own good! ( so what was the big pill, small pill clue about???)

OK , since the name of the event was "MIGHTY REAL" this IS it - absolutely :

    SLOW VERSION

and if so, I'm sorta glad I missed it ....would've left with a tear in my eye and a big lump in my throat.

( To add to the event' s relevance ---- how many several times have I mentioned it was in this very club's bathroom that Sylvester and I shared our eternal kiss??
Yes I went back and stood in that very spot..... had to actually , its where you wash your hands...and I'm one of those seemingly rare birds that ALWAYS washes their hands. )

The slow version would have also made a nice finale for this party, Remicks, but nope, that's not it. BTW, how cool is it that you were able to revisit that spot in the restroom? I think you'll be pleased to know I always wash my hands also. Before the party, I even passed out bottles of Purell to the gang in the sound & lighting station and the door and ticket staff!

Sandy, you also had a great guess but, no, that is not correct. I can say that you are warm to the closing song, even the first song of the evening, again by Sylvester! Since you've been to a prior RtP, I think you would have loved the Dreamland space. The dancefloor was larger because there were multiple levels to dance. The layout of the main room was the sound and lighting station all along one wall. If front of the station, you had a nice raised walkway with space to watch the dancefloor. Along the right side of the room, there was another raised walkway where people were either dancing or watching the main dancefloor. Above this walkway was a catwalk. If you were willing to climb up a ladder, you could either dance along the catwalk or in one of the two "cages" on either end of the catwalk. On the opposite end of the sound and lighting station, you had the expansive stage. We had black light cannons aimed at the stage for the flaggers and fanners. Because of all the space, they really put on a spectacular show! Two of the arc lamps, manned by Miss Carla and Bobby M., were stationed at both ends of the stage. The third, manned by RtP producer, Chris, was at the end of the sound and lighting station. To the right of the stage, those of you familiar with Dreamland would see the famous curved staircase! The staircase brought you to an upstairs bar and lounge. Going to the end of this lounge and to the left, there was a wild room with beds (and Chris told me their were mirrors on the ceiling!). Hmmmmm....

This year we were delighted the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence joined in the RtP fun! Wait until you see the photos of their spectacular outfits. They were told about the party by the famous brides with wedding cake hats at last year's Remember the White Party, Deana and Diva D. Those two were not to be outdone by the Sisters at this party. When you see their photos, you'll know why. I can tell you now that the dancefloor erupted in cheers and whistles when Deana and Diva D made their appearances.

We also had a politician and an adult film model! One of San Francisco's favorite hostess, Donna Sachet, was at a fundraiser for Bevin Dufty, a current out SF Supervisor now running for mayor, earlier in the evening. Donna loves her disco and she has written some very kind comments about RtP in her column in the Bay Area Reporter. We were excited that she brought Bevin to RtP MRD! He was the only person in a suit, but he was there!

During the evening, I noticed two guys in fun, festive outfits moving around the main dancefloor. One of them had a camera and he was taking up close photos of the other guy, who was doing some really dramatic poses. I wondered if maybe he could have been a fashion model, but I thought, he doesn't really have the fashion model look. The next day or two, I noticed on Donna Sachet's Facebook page that somebody named Evan posted a link to pictures from RtP MRD on Donna's page. It was the guy modelling! I then found out this guy isn't a fashion model, he's an adult film model at Hot House! LOL! Paging Marky! Ever hear of this guy, Evan Matthews??? One producer has a photo of him with the Sisters. Maybe that photo will make it to the upcoming gallery for this party on the RtP site.

Anyway, I digress. Boy, did I! How did I get from the final song of the evening to adult film models???

OK then .....I'm bettin' you guys were plenty "GRATEFUL" you were offered this place and were then able to pull it all off with such sudden notice and it all went off so well ... so :

    GRATEFUL .... final guess !!

The fun festive outfit that stood out for me was the tall guy decked out in all metallic silver seeming sort of space-age / sort of LaBelle and carrying around big & likewise flat-silver balloons that were letters that together spelled out D-I-S-C-O.

My biggest chuckle of the night was sometime early morning , I was just looking up observing the lights in action darting around the mirror balls etc. , when my eyes finally wandered past them up to the high ceiling beyond , and there amongst the rafters I saw pressed flat against it the giant silver "D" that I guess had escaped earlier in the night !!! lol!

That was from DJ Rotten Robbie's outfit. He arrived wearing an outfit with silver balloons which spelled out DISCO. Well, actually, the O had already gone before I even saw the outfit, and I witnessed the D break loose and float up to the ceiling while he was dancing. He ditched the remainder of the letters soon after that. :)

if I can cut in for a bit here, I also partied and danced with Sylvester and his partner Rick at the wooooooooooooonderful Sunday afternoon T-Dances at the I-Beam in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury. Now when I buzz through that area (only to go to Amoeba Music) I still get a bit teary thinking about it all. And speaking of Amoeba, if you're there are exactly the right time (hard to arrange, of course) they often have some good disco records but they're often quite expensive which makes me think disco is popular here in Northern California right now. 10/19/2011

Keefe you do such an excellent job with your blow-by-blow accounts of these parties so I can't wait to read them and the playlist !

In the meantime , here are some of my observational bits and pieces :

Best Surprise Song . The "I can't believe Jerry's playing this!" moment : DATE WITH THE RAIN Eddie Kendricks ....that I got to dance in a club setting to this particular record ( and I mean DANCE ) well, it helps make my life now seem all the more complete !

Other Best Surprise Song: I NEED YOUR LOVIN" Teena Marie. I'm not really a big TM fan , so the surprise for me about this song was how much I enjoyed it. I don't know --- it came on at the right time with the right mid-tempo BPM's and for the first time I really heard all the swirling strings that are in it ....and I really got behind the groove .

Speaking of getting behind the groove- that had to be Barry Walters and partner .....I saw them race from the upper level when Crown Heights Affair came on and I think they then remained on the floor for hours!! and of whom I witnessed the nights most endearing moment ... can't recall the exact song even though I was sure I would .... but the lyrics in it were appropriate enough to cause Barry to reach over and, to the amusement of his partner, with his two index fingers he drew a big heart on his chest .

NOT A Troc Song Apparently: --- I was dancing with a hard-core, serious Trocer from BITD and when SAVAGE LOVER came on, he looked at me like "What the f*&k is this ??? "

This Magic Moment : Besides meeting Jerry Bonham and you Keefe , another highlight was being introduced to his royal Trocadero highness : Bobby Viterriti.

Most Troc-like Moment : Keefe you had introduced me to a young man .... I'll call him "Todd" , ('cause that's his name) , who is a lurker to this forum (Hi Todd! ) and toward the wee-est hours , Queen Samantha 's SWEET SAN FRANCISCO came on and he raced over to me and insisted I dance pulling me onto the floor and saying "It's Sweet San Francisco !!!!!" ............ that seemed like a very very Troc moment to me as it brought back similar memories from times gone by.

(and you were right Todd :
GET OUT YOUR HANDKERCHIEF : a falsetto-ish Ashford & Simpson, NOT Bee Gees as I kiddingly guessed)

Bad Timing Moment .... I got impatient for Keefe to introduce me to Jerry so I attempted to yell up to him, almost impossible as he's platformed about 2 feet higher and partitioned off by counters and equipment - anyway I'm yelling "it's me , remicks!" , and I think he's probably hearing someone who sounds like they're yelling up to him about mixing , didn't help that I timed it just as he was mixing ... out of Patti Austin's DO YOU LOVE ME " , so he gave me a courteous if not a" don't bother me " smile and resumed his focus on his work . Understandably , so I backed off and figured I'd get a chance to meet him properly at some point .

Keefe though, stayed especially busy - always darting about , often times filming and thankfully corn-mealing the floor (wore wrong shoes!) . He also supplied various sundries including breath freshening gum( hmm , what was that about!?) cookies and at one point coming right onto the dance floor offering me and others, water . Yes he was a good host and Keefe, I must admit I didn't always catch what you were saying even though I might've seemed to... on top of the loud music, I was wearing earplugs !!

So those are a few impressions of the night .
All was superb: lighting ,sound, music , club setting , etc.

Thank you Jerry for your hospitality and personal invite! Thanks Keefe for everything including the gum!

THANK YOU ALL INVOLVED FOR YET
ONE MORE NIGHT WITH THE MUSIC!

When I visit San Francisco, The first visit is always Ameoba. I have bought a few gems there, but like usual, never in the right place at the right time. Last time i visited, last March, I went to Market street (Castro end) to visit a little cd store that specialized in disco and it was gone. Gutted!

    That was Medium Rare records.

A lot of those "CDs" were homemade CDRs though...

One of these years I'm going to have to make it down to RTP. Just have to find out about them about a month or so beforehand. Will there be a cd release of the music this year? If so, any idea when it'll be available to purchase?

I knew they sold those type of CDs, but I bought the official Unidisc or Dutch one's. Nice bloke who ran it though. Have to find somewhere else when we go in March. Rasputin's don't have much in the disco line though.

Last time i was there we tried the 'Holy Cow' one Sunday night. It was quite good. The pub 'hole in the wall' was quite odd though. LOL!!!

The mystery is over! Want to know the list of songs DJ Jerry Bonham treated us to at Remember the Party - Mighty Real Disco on 10-9-11? The playlist is up on the Remember the Party website. When you're done over here, you might want to check out the list at:

    http://www.remembertheparty.com/rtpmrd-playlist.shtml

Also, this year one of our regular photographers, Elaree, was away on travel. To cover this party, a team of photographers was assembled. The resulting images are now up on the website as well! You'll see many of the sights we've talked about earlier in this thread including Dreamland looking quite good in 2011, DJ Rotten Robbie and his DISCO balloons, Deana and Diva D's fabulous tributes to Labelle and Divine, the new mirror ball cluster, Jerry in the new expansive sound and light station, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence go disco, and so much more. Why I even spotted a certain regular poster to this site! These pics can be found at the following:

Cool! 'Get Out Your Handkerchief' by Ashford & Simpson is so fab & apparently (according to Ralph Tee) it was one of the final tracks played at the closing night of 'The Saint' in New York. I'd love love love to hear 'Havent You Heard' by Patrice Rushen in a club as it's one of my all-time faves. Seems to be more absolute classics than ever before this year - you excelled yourself Jerry!

Sigh...Missed The Party. Having attended twice I can well imagine the highs I did not get to experience this year. Would have been floating in the air already right from the beginning with Fancy Dancer going into San Francisco Hustle. The Eddie Kendricks-Yvonne Elliman-Carl Carlton-Johnny Mathis sequence...Golden Palm Award, Disco Drama Of The Year category. And the finale with the Salsoul Ork! - Was never too big a fan of Sylvester's but hmmm...maybe I'll check some of those records out now.

Another Troc -like moment for me :

BITD, besides hearing those current songs that guaranteed a packed dance floor , as important was hearing those edgy new songs that caught your imagination

That happened for me while on the dance floor at the RIP party. Carefully couched amongst well-known songs was one I didn't know .... but immediately took to . Later, what I remembered particularly was the phrase " keep on", so when the playlist came out the mystery tune was easy to spot :

Set Me Free The Three Degrees
    Walk Right Now The Jacksons
    Step By Step Peter Griffin
Do Ya Wanna Funk Patrick Cowley Featuring Sylvester
    Keep On! Marcel Pane
I Got The Feeling Two Tons O' Fun
    Alive With Love Cut Glass

    KEEP ON !

anyway that one was for me , my discovery tune of the night, similar to how we always looked forward to the new ones in the course of a night at the Troc.

    *****
    added:

this record has had very little mention on this forum-
Funky Dude in October of 2002 said:

Marcel Pane - Keep On/Little Lonely Lion 1979 12" 45 ('Keep On' is a fantastic guitar scratchin' disco dance track)

and Nick Nack commented in August of that same year:

I have one fantasy man: Marcel Pane. His head shot on the 12" jacket of "Keep On" stilldrives me crazy. The song is hot, too! ...
in a thread titled "sexiest disco artist ".

Keep On sure is a good one. I often seem to seque it into this:

The lyrics are excellent: "concentration, persperation, inspiration..."

    perfect!

both those songs have something that creates a warm and fuzzy energy . Just an added thought , do you ever mix them the other way? - from SHOWMAN into KEEP ON ? that to me would amp up the dance floor's vibe as KEEP ON has more of a forward "thrust" to it , - if that makes sense .

Good point, sounds like the way to mix it for sure - got a big gig coming up and will try it out. Maximizing the thrust is what we keep aiming at isn't it, to try and make it build and build and build. I do remember last year I did go from Never Let You Go by Marc Aryan into Keep On :

What it sounded like I can't quite recall but in any case, the volume was extremely loud so I quess most people thought it was okay.

Well, enough of this back to Remember The Party now.

Remicks, I hope someday I'll get down with you and SFBeary and Disco Kid at an RTP event. And of course, I have to join in the list-making as upthread: I don't care who knows I rubbed out a few in my twenties to the cover-shots -- heh -- of Exile's album "Heart and Soul,"No. 1 on my personal list of Subliminally Homoerotic Bearded Men Hanging All Over Each Other. Mac Davis, helpfully cited by Bernie in another thread, tended to show a lot of nice basket on his Seventies album covers. But he and Falco both really looked too full of themselves-- especially on Falco's "Junge Roemer" album art and prison-themed "Einzelhaft" front cover -- to support any plausible fantasies. Of course, we can't leave out the iconically stached and beefy Paul Parker, who still responds graciously to messages on his website paulparkermusic.com, and whose latest photos make him, hands down, Silverdaddy of the Century. My very first disco fantasy man, just out of college and meeting the national chart reporter DJs at the summer 1979 Billboard Disco Conference: Boston pioneer Danae Jacovidis, who is seen making me weak-kneed, posing with the rare and valuable records he actually played, in the leaflet accompanying his genius and history-making"At Midnight" Disconet medley. Salute, and respect always, you handsome man.
