Rush Limbaugh on Disco: A Hypocrite

This is not a POLITICAL discussion or a character discussion. I want to state some thoughts about what Rush said about disco.

Rush Limbaugh has said that he does not like the seventies and one of the worst aspects of the decade was disco. He has used many of the derogatory adjectives that we are familiar with from the lips of disco critics over the years.

He may say that he detests disco, but disco is used often in his bumper music. Music going into and out of commercial breaks. For a guy who puts down disco, he has used many songs, always instrumental parts, rarely vocals in his bumper music.

Here is a partial list of songs used by Rush (and this is only a partial list of songs off the top of my head).

    Disco Inferno-Trammps
    The Chase-Giorgio
    Bad Girls-Donna Summer
    Hot Stuff-Donna Summer
    It Only Takes A Minute-Tavaras
    Macho Man-Village People
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood-Santa Esmeralda
    Who Loves You?-Four Seasons
    Stayin' Alive-Bee Gees

He has also often plays Who's That Lady-Isley Brothers and he has spent five minutes commenting on how the song had a "phenomenol" bass line and how much he likes it. And playing parts of it that he spoke of.

Please do not comment on his politics, his character or his weight. I would only like to keep this to disco.

Rush was a music disc jockey from 1966 until about 1975. The largest market that he was a deejay in was Pittsburgh.
When he spun discs, he went under the name of Jeff Christie. I have one aircheck of him in Pittsburgh as Jeff Christie.

    Dittos,

    Steven

    Steven,

Very interesting post. I'm curious, what exactly did he say that he didn't like about Disco? Is it the quality of the music or the social changes it brought about?

Republicans seem to want everything that's transpired in popular culture since the 1950's to be erased.

Bring back the days of Pat Boone, "Leave It To Beaver" and more handguns for the kids and they'd cream.

No wonder the 1960's and 1970's terrify them. Civil rights, feminism, gay rights, abortion rights , anti-war sentiment, Watergate, the realization that the government lies to the people they are supposed to serve...all came to the forefront during these two decades--disrupting their view of "THE WAY THINGS SHOULD BE".

Sorry to be SOOOOO Political...BUT they've been lying to us again, methinks. :P

Interesting post, Steven. I never knew Rush Limbaugh was anything but a pig :P . Like Bernie, I'd like to know what he disliked about the music, especially seeing the playlist you've laid out for his air time breaks.

    Geez,

I always vote Republican, was a liberal Democrat once,
I am bi-racial and don't hold or aspire to any of the attitudes
described in this thread and have always loved Disco, my missus and I still dance the Hustle on Saturday nights.

So perhaps some of you all need to re-examine your own prejudices.

Rush didn't like disco? Quelle surprise!!!!He didn't like it because he probably had heart attacks whenever he tried to dance.

Rush Limpballs is indeed going to be part of ESPN's NFL pre-game show. He probably won't let them show any highlights where they run or pass to the left.

Ya gotta love him......espcially those rumors of him living in a log cabin (that bit of goss is especially for Marky).

Well, I know how political I can get so I tried my best to ignore this topic but...
Nicky, I'll keep it clean (politically that is).
I used to listen to Rush when I was establishing a political philosophy. I use to hear him play disco quite often and often thought the music didn't match Rush's persona. Now Knowing Rush a little better, I am not surprised. He again proves himself the hypocrite he is. In a addition let's face it, his slam on disco plays well with the knuckle scrapers who like it when Rush does the thinking for them.
Boodi, I caught your "Log Cabin" inference. Perhaps you can enlighten me. It might be better if you email me on this

Thanks Marky, I am familiar with the Log Cabin organization. Are you and Boodi implying that Rush is Al Rantel's role model in more ways than one?

    Rush Limbaugh on Disco

Thank you for your interest and I will now catch up on answering questions.

About three weeks ago before Rush took a week off to play in an amateur golf tournament, he discussed what he thought of the seventies. One of his comments was that disco was one of the worst things to come out of the seventies. He called it "mindless" and a waste of time to listen to. These are not quotes, but what I remember. I do not remember anything said about disco and its influence on society. One of his pet phrases is, "Maggot infested, dope smoking FM types." The FM part of that is probably a reference to "underground stations" of the era 1967-1971. They were often FM stations that played album cuts and were popular with "hippie types." He has stonger opinions about the hippie crowd and their music (Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead) especially the anti-Vietnam War music. He does not comment about disco in that way. He just thinks about it as a "mindless, repetitious" music.

Even I do not listen for the lyrics though some songs have fantastic lyrics. Songs such as "Take That To The Bank" and "I Will Survive" and even "Night Fever" has great lyrics. But what matters to me is the beat and how danceable any song is. "Reunited" and Earth, Wind and Fire's "Reasons" are played with disco songs but I do not like them because they do not have the beat, they are slow songs.

Funny about Rush, another time he commented that he does not listen to the lyrics but listens to the tempo of the songs.I guess he has his taste, but I did not like hearing him put down disco when he plays many disco songs on his show.

I record Rush every day with a timer and play back the show fast forwarding the spot ads. I have been a paid up card carrying member of the Libertarian Party since 1980. I agree with Rush on about 80% of issues. I am against nearly all that government does. If any of you have listened to Walter Williams (PHD Economics) fill in for Rush, my views are more like Walter's than Rush's.

Rush's controversy is a part of his success. He gets noticed. So those of you who are his critics. This is part of his success, that you even care or get emotional about him.

I never give Rush a thought. For most of the 1990's he was EVERYWHERE-- on his lame TV show talking to his dittoheads, hocking his books, etc. You couldn't escape him. Then, after the Letterman appearance...he disappeared from my radar screen. (Seriously folks, I ain't gonna tape his radio show!!!)

I just wondered why Fox TV doesn't use him as a commentator??? :o

The last thing I heard about him was, oddly, that he was going deaf.. ..and then suddenly, he wasn't. (Shades of Mama Judd's miraculous recovery).

Mindless repetitious nature of disco? What about his show!
If he doesn't listen to the lyrics, how could he draw his conclusions. Of course I'm being rhetorical because i know Rush is fulla ****. Wealthy I'll grant you but still fulla ****!

I think it was two years ago. When the final choice was made, after all other candidates for the job were eliminated and two or three were left to choose from, Rush was turned down, but he almost got the job.

Now he will do some ESPN commentary on some football games.

In the mid-eighties, Rush handled promotions for the KC Royals baseball team. He said he made $24,000 a year doing that and working beside superstars who made millions per year. Now Rush earns more than a million dollars per day every day.

I think, that for what he does, he is the best at it. A master of his craft should be respected for what he does even if not agreed with on his views. To arouse the amount of emotion from critics that he does is a credit to his mastering of the medium.

What we need to do, is enlighten his views on disco. That may be possible.

    Hmmm...

I wonder what's in Rush's CD player now????

    1) LEE GREENWOOD'S GREATEST HIT ("God Bless The USA")--the extended WEIMAR ARENA ANTHEM MIX

    2) THE OSMONDS --"OSMONDMANIA!!!!" (family values, folks!!!)

    3) TED NUGENT'S "FULL BLUNTAL NUGITY" (lots huntin' & skinnin" & trappin' & GUNS, GUNS, GUNS!!!)

    4) CLINT BLACK'S "I Rack & Roll" (foreign policy primer)

    5) KATE SMITH'S "Christmas Album" (cause the cover reminds him of his Mama and/or himself in drag)

    6) secretly hidden under copies of The National Review... (for those "Log Cabin" urges)
RICKY MARTIN' S "SHAKE (THEN EAT) YOUR BON-BON" (Paul might like this too!!!)

& JUDY GARLAND'S "THE COMPLETE CARNEGIE HALL CONCERTS" (for the DRAMA QUEEN in all of us)

    Your thoughts???? :P

    Rush Limbaugh; on Disco

To answer your question, no. The only Country music I have ever heard him play is for the Feminist Update. For the first five years it was Sandy Posey, "Born A Woman." and then it was some song about men by some country sister group.

He never talks about Country and he never uses Country in his bumper music.

He has said that he is friends with Ted Nugent. Nugent is a possibility. He uses, "Cat Scatch Fever" and "Journey to The Center of Your Mind," in his bumper music.

He has made comments about today's music that there are very few good songs that come out because nobody knows how to play music with a beat anymore. This is another reason to turn him on to disco. Disco starts with a beat and then adds to it.

What does Rush play? He likes a lot of top 40 and Classic Rock from about 1966-1975 (the years he was a deejay). He probably does not like liberal protest songs. I do not think that he is any more into patriotic music than most people. G. Gordon Liddy uses all kinds of patriotic music as his bumper music. He is probably into that. Abba too.

Rush plays Manheim Steamroller every year before he goes on a Christmas vacation. He likes them a lot. He has talked about how much he likes Stevie Wonder, James Brown and the Isley Brothers.

He said that he got fired from a Pittsburgh Top 40 station for playing "Get Off My Cloud," (Rolling Stones) too much.
