In the disco era what popular songs didn't DJ's touch

Studio 54 played songs off of the disco charts.Other DJ's and clubs played to the hole sexy vibe. What were the songs DJ's wouldn't play due to being over played, or cheese factor.Even songs that came out due to current events in the 70's.Like "here comes the garbage man".Due to the garbage truck strike in New York in the 70's.
    DISCO

The word evokes not just a type of music or a kind of dance or even a style of dress.It\'s also a new social order of black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, all hot, sweaty and, most likely, high, together.

    Songs not Played

This is pre-disco but it came to mind. In 1972 Chuck Berry had his only #1 song and no station played it. It was My Ding A Ling and it was too risque' for 1972. No one would play it but everyone bought it. It would be in the top 5 on a station but they would never play it.

I just remember a lot of dj's being adverse, some to their own detriment, to playing songs that were 'radio hits'. Top 40 was definitely out, especially in the gay club scene. That doesn't mean all hits were excluded, it's just that they weren't pushed as in other clubs. There were dj's in clubs that would play the 'hits' two even three times in one evening. In a good gay club, you heard them once. If you missed it, too bad.

Also, I remember novelty records becoming passe around '78. Before that, all those tv themes and whatever could be heard. There was too much good stuff out in '78 and '79 to bother with that. Although, "My Toot Toot" did seem to sneak in. :D

To the best of my memory, thus far, I've only come up with one example of the #1 pop hit that even had a dance remix (Hot Tracks) that the DJs refused to play in SF (at least at Troc)...

    "PHYSICAL" - Olivia Newton-John

Too much over-exposure?; too poppy?; that aerobics video????

I'm sure there were more I'll have to think....

I'm just guessing, but I doubt too many dj's played "Disco Duck".

Btw, wasn't there an import remix of "Physical"?

Songs That Would Not Be Played

I remember hearing Disco Duck at The Limelight in South Florida. And everyone dance to it. It was danceable and to me, that is the most important thing about a song in a club.

Funny cause Bobby V mentioned "Disco Duck" in his interview with DJ Jimmy M....

    (I didn't quite understand the exact circumstances...BUT)

something about Troc played "Disco Duck" at around 3:00am and just turned on the lights and told the people to go home..

this was before Bobby was a DJ there, I guess. He said that was when he realized he wanted the job there, cause they just did what they wanted to do.

At first I thought this was gonna be one of those "everyone was mean to Bobby when he first stated at Troc" stories...and that the first DJ of the evening played "Disco Duck" and had the lights turned on BEFORE Bobby was to take over the DJ duties...sorta like "f*uck you" I dare you to get them dancing again after this!!!...BUT, I guess not)

i dont know if my record is as bad as what peppertree heard but must be a close second around 78 i used to d.j in a gay club in liverpool 2 or three nights a week the d.j i replaced used to play tradgedy records all night like "it should have been me and i wanted to change things around and was sucessfull.then the owner started asking me why dont you play that 'nice' singin in the rain record by sheila b.devotion,i explained to him i hadnt got it and was never going to buy it and it was never going to be on the playlist at this club,so he said to me ill buy it then and threw the money at me and said buy it when you're in town tomorrow,i never did and he went beserk, the night after he came in with it himself,i still refused and he sacked me :o you know the type of thing " i could get 100 d.js to do this job theyre all waiting" so i told him get them then.
the next day i had the 8a.m phonecall "sorry i was a bit hasty last night will you come back and will you play that 'nice ' singing in the rain record the crowd will love it". this went on for about a month till he forgot about it, one night i was sacked the next night i resigned and so on!
but i NEVER played it i saved the city :P
