Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

Has anyone seen this show? I saw it for the first time on Bravo last week and NBC will air its new shows on tuesday. A group of gay men nicknamed the "FAB 5" goes out on a mission in NYC to transform straight guys into new improved stylish, cultured, artistic......straight guys. Each guy has a specialty: fashion, grooming, food & wine, interior design, music & culture. Carson, who is the fashion expert and also (IMO) the "flame" of the group, is the most humorous with his perfect punchlines and very "touchy feely". I found the show entertaining so I will be a faithful viewer :) !

Though it made me think about all the stereotypes/myths that I continually hear about straight and gay men like:

gay men are cleaner ( houses, cars etc..)
    gay men are more stylish
gay men are more/too fussy argumentative
    gay men are more groomed
    gay men are more cultured

I know that this pisses off straight guys because these "myths/stereotypes" makes them out to be burly, brut neanderthals. Nevertheless, this show is making people talk about those myths and whether a gay man can turn an "ugly duckling into a swan" (no pun intended these are not my words, I'm quoting from the radio station").

    Hey Delight :P
I remember reading a short piece about this last week in Salon. I think there was some complaint that the images stereotyped the gay community. I didn't catch but I'd like to check it out the next time I can.
Bravo seems to be the gay friendly network.

I'm really starting to get pissed that I don't get Bravo. I'm gonna miss this and that other one about the gay bachelor. Time to switch from Comcast to 'The Dish'. :D

Mark, me too!!! By the way, don't watch the NBC version (unless you absolutely have to - like it sounds Nicky may have to do) since it's edited to a 30 minute version.

Wasn't the part where they waxed the one guy's unibrow and then ears just too disgusting?

Next week, the premiere of "Boy Meets Boy". Will it be as much fun?

If there wasn't one, I'd like to add it. I could go on a long tirade, but I'll spare you all.

Oh come on guys...NOT every gay guy is a stereotype...BUT SOME.. make that, LOTS ARE!!! :P

I've met MORE THAN A FEW of these guys on the street where I live.

Suppopsedly there's more flack about the "Boy Meets Boy" show than "QE". Seems that the main guy looking for a lovematch got really pissed about the fact that there were straight guys in the competiton pretending to be gay to get money!!! Seems that some of his final choices were in fact ...(gasp) BREEDERS!!!!

There's an article in the new Newsweek ...the show premieres next Tuesday on Bravo, the GAY channel! :D

The Gay Channel. Maybe even "GET." Hey Marky, I like it
Fits in nicely with the "gay images" don't you think? Opera, off beat comedy programming, etc. :)

And speaking of "GET", I just read in Salon that there is a search on for gay country music musicians for some kind of gay country music reality show. I guess if this matches you, saddle up and do the audition

Well, I caught the 30 minute version of Queer Eye on NBC. It wasn't bad but you could feel it was chopped and rushed. Probably would have enjoyed it more on Bravo. Of the FAB 5, from what I got to see, two I liked, one I 'hated' and two are non-entities.

Interior Decorator and Food Guy - who cares
Hairdresser (very fine ) and Culture (sweet young man)

As for "Ms. Fashion" --- I can do without his mincing and lisping. I've always had a problem with '24/7 flamers' and I know it's judgemental but that sterotype does irk me. It's because of guys like him that my Mom's husband asked me when I was going to start wearing a dress? AND HE WAS SERIOUS!, the idiot, but that stereotype seems to stick.

I finally saw the episode with the long-haired guy and his trashy blond girlfriend.......yuck :x ! Not only was she trashy, she was ugly and demanding! I see why he was so nervous because he was afraid of the "red-light district" wench's approval. What did Carson say "There's a hooker in Trenton that lost her boots"?????? :-?

I like the last episode when the straight guy "John" wanted to propose to his Armenian girlfriend of two years. I love what Ted did with the chocolates (it gives me an idea) and I like how Thom hooked up the backyard Moroccan style with exotic pillows, rose petals and red drapes. John liked it so much, he became emotional and started to cry  :) - that was sooooooo nice! I thought his girlfriend was gonna turn down his proposal - she would be crazy to say no.

    I'm LOVING "Queer Eye"!!!!

I thought the formula might get stale by now...BUT last night's show was the best ever!!! (The hot blue-collar cowboy guy who proposes to his more upwardly-mobile professional Armenian girlfriend).

I think the guys do an excellent job and keep the bitchiness tempered with sweetness and a genuine sense of caring.

Caron is a swishy, minty QUEEN BUT he is HILARIOUS (what crack comic timing!!)...and very sweet (or else he's got me totally fooled).

His one liners crack me up--last night I fell on the floor...when people were talking about being told they look like Keanu Reeves....and he says "People tell me I look like Ellen DeGeneres"!!!!!

Then his little lecture on how to pronounce "Ralph Lauren"... LOR en NOT Lor EN...do you know how many times I've said this to people???!!!! It's Sophia Lor EN but it's Ralph LOR en...like Lauren Bacall. Even announcers on radio & TV add the accent to the second syllable on Lauren, seemingly in an attempt to fancy it up!!! (Hey folks, Ralph's real name is Lipschitz!!!! I kid you NOT!!!!)

Then, in a flagrant attempt to flirt & tease the Cowboy, Carson asked him what his girlfriend had that Carson didn't "other than a working vagina"???!!!

How can ya not love this guy???!!!!! :D

    Hey Marky

What about the time when Carson took the long-haired guy to try on some jeans and he peaked inside the dressing room and said "Oh my god it's HUUGE"!!!!!!!.......paused and said "the belt"   !!!!!!!!!

When Carson found a pair of the handsome cowboy's dirty turdy draws :o :x he said "ewww I see someone had mexican". I was so embarrassed  for him, he should not attempt to wash those shitty draws :o :x ....I would've threw them in the garbage.

I have to agree that this week's episode with Cowboy John and Tina was the best yet! Like Mark said the balance of bitchiness and sweetness was so perfect. I was all choked up during the last fifteen minutes. The way the "Fabulous 5" (as John would say) were at the edge of their seats and clutching each other as they waited for Tina to give John an answer to his marriage proposal - that gave me a sense of how caring they could be!

Also, Billy Masters in his latest Filth! column reports about his unexpected meeting with Thom and Carson,

"Billy inadvertently fed right into a stereotype himself. It will not come as a surprise when I reveal that I have a big mouth ñ heck, anyone Iíve dated/slept with/played with on a dance floor could tell ya that! But sometimes I get myself in trouble, as was the case last week in NYC when I was dining at that trendy Chelsea eatery, Food Bar. A dark-haired gent came to our table to say hi to my companion. He introduced himself to me as Tom, and I asked if we had met previously since he looked familiar. My companion laughed and said, ìYou probably saw him on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy on Bravo ñ heís the interior designer.î Of course ñ Thom (with an ìhî), not Tom (sans ìhî). Wanting to redeem myself, I tossed off a quip ñ ìAt least youíre not the queeny blond.î Just then, who walks over to the table but Carson ñ the queeny blond! Apparently, the Fab 5 were having dinner together to toast the showís success. Thankfully, Carson didnít hear my comment and, after chatting with him, he completely won me over with his charm and wit (although Iím still partial to Kyan, who seems to be channeling my wardrobe!)."

Very easily. Even the tv commercials with him in it are making me twinge. Maybe it's the problem that I'm not able to laugh about it cause I don't see the show. All NBC stuck us with was 30 minutes of a flamboyant queen. How nice... just what network tv needed.

I don't get cable or satellite, so I've only seen one episode on NBC, but I pretty much enjoyed it - although they do pick very stereotypical gay men. But considering that there's rarely any gay-acting gay men on regular "antenna TV", I'll take what I can get. They're better than Will on "Will & Grace" - that show should be called "Jack & Karen". :)

Some friends and I were joking around about how we kept saying the name of the show wrong when telling others about it, and we were occasionally calling it "Straight Eye For The Queer Guy". Imagine that show!!! You know, if closeted guys had to de-homosexualize their environment for visiting grandparents, or whatever. If they came to my house, it would be ground zero up in here! There wouldn't be anything left but the refrigerator (sans magnets, clippings, and photos) and the appliances! Out with the boyfriend, CDs, records, furniture, clothing, books, magazines, artwork, etc.

Mark, I felt the same way. This show seemed forced and artificial, especially when compared to last week's show. The "straight" guy wasn't all that interesting. He only had a so so voice and the song he wrote was mediocre. Food guy, Ted, didn't have much to do (tea???) and Kyan's contributions were either ignored or didn't really help. Jai seemed to be a little too proud of himself for his minimal contributions. The best part was the tranformation of the apartment - I loved the color scheme in the bathroom!

Let's hope next week is better!

The last episode was kinda boring. You said that the best transformation was the apartment, I feel that they could have "done it up" more. But if you heard what Kyan said, "If she cleaned her house, I would've been able to do more". The best room was the bedroom.

I wasn't crazy about those glittery jeans for Vinnie, its more suitable for his wife. His singing isn't horrible yet it wasn't great either so he should stick to the keyboard or background singer.

The couple live in Co-Op City(northeast Bronx) my sister used to live up there and I hung out in those developments back in the days. In the future, his wife need to hide her weave/hairpiece so when company comes over like the "Fab 5", they won't find it and fling it around.

I agree, Marky. The subject this week seemed like a nice guy, but he just wasn't that interesting. And except for that garbage dump of an apartment (now who would let videotapes and newspapers and magazines pile up like that?!!   ), he didn't need much of a makeover. Oops--make better. "Don't shave your head with water only"? Duh! (Kyan really needs to broaden his routine beyond telling men how to put gel in their hair and which direction to shave.)

I think my favorite eps so far have been the first one with Butch the artist--he was just so charming and appreciative after the Fab Five did their thing--and the one with the candlelit proposal--because that urban cowboy was HOT!

Regarding someone's earlier comment about "Straight Eye for the Queer Guy," I read that the Fab Five were asked at a press conference how they would feel if the tables were turned, if gay guys were asked to straighten up their act. They aswered "We've been there: It's called high school. Hated it."

Is that the perfect comeback or what?!
