I've been interested by the sheer volume of records that some of our posters here were given during the Disco years. NickNack has mentioned for instance that he was given anything up to 70 or so records each and every week at a certain period ( '79 ). Personally, I didn't get through anything like that amount of discs. Frankly, I'd have felt completely and utterly overwhelmed by so much product (but hell, what a collection afterwards) and found it impossible to sort out the wheat from the chaff.
So, my question is (and this is to current DJs and former DJs):
How Long Did A Record Last. On average, considering the turnover of records, possibly fickle punters tastes and the like, how long did a record have before it went back in the crates to be forgotten?
I guess for myself, I'd play a new record at least 3 times and if it looked like garnering some sort of interest then, unless it became a substantial hit, it had a shelf life of anything between 3 - 6 weeks.
There would be the odd few records that I'd persevere with and maybe still play 3 months after release, despite not being a recognized 'hit'. There were the odd few that just seemed to hang on, but my darling punters had a failsafe way of letting me know which records weren't wanted anymore.

What is/was your experience?

BTW: I guess it could be fun doing a disco these days 'cos the form on all these records from way back is known. It wouln't be as exciting as playing brand new things and wondering if this WAS the next big one, but it wouldn't be as stressful, would it?
