I couldn't seem to get the link to work but I can only think of 2 R & B tracks I've heard (that weren't Zapp, I mean) that featured vocoder pretty prominently. One was "Pony" by Ginuine, and the second was a remix of BabyFace's Shalamar cover "This is For the Lover In You" that's practically a note for note copy of "Pony". And one other musical thought may apply here: Roger Troutman did a guest shot using his vocoder on "Boom! There She Was" by Scritti Politti, but whether or not you'd consider it R & B is debatable. But Scritti Politti's VERY British and white singer Green sounds a LOT like El DeBarge to me.
