Record collection + long distance move = nightmare?

Vinyl is lovely and all until you have to move..

I'm set to embark on a long-distance move in the not too distant future and at the moment I'm at a loss as to how exactly I'm going to deal with my music collection. I haven't even counted the number of LPs/12" and CDs I have but I'm sure it is several hundred at the very least, if not hovering well over the one-thousand mark, at most. There's definitely a lot of stuff there that I need to (and am ready to) get rid of, but even that still leaves a good chunk of it, and some of it (as anyone with a large collection can attest to) fairly precious..

I'm not moving a great deal of furniture or electronics, so it probably isn't viable for any moving company, but I've heard of other possible shipping options (courier, trucked on pallets etc..)

I have somewhere to leave it behind if I can't decide on anything, but I'm just curious if anyone here's had any experience with this.

I've moved numerous times with a large record collection. With the exception of my sojourn in Chicago where i used a moving company from Jersey, it's all been done by myself with family and friends and a U-hual truck. It's back-breaking labor, but it's do-able. Good luck.

neonlights: i was in that situation 5 years ago, moving 100 kms away, and even the moving company suggested i pack and transport my vinyl/cd/book collections MYSELF as most companies would charge the move by WEIGHT (and that would cost me a small fortune, as 1 full box of vinyl treasures weighs a ton!))...if possible let movers move your furniture and YOU move your collections, even if you have to do it in stages.

I've moved several times and carted my collection with me each time. I packed them in the standard 2 cu foot carboard moving boxes that you can get from you local moving company. In each move instance I either moved the items myself with the help of friends, or the moving company moved them for me. FYI, I was not charged for the weight of the items. I would imagine if you used a shipping company or courier you're going to be charged an exorbitant rate to move the records, etc, but if you only have a 1000 that's not too bad, it might be in expensive. The last time I moved I moved over 5000 records, hundreds of cd's, cassettes, videos, dvds and 45s.

if and when I find myself in that situation and needing to move heavy boxes of vinyl, not only will I do that and pay any price, but my precious vinyl will NOT (repeat: NOT) leave my sight for a single second as I've spent most of my life collecting it and most of it is irreplaceable. What if you trusted it to some careless moving people who left it in the sun and it was destroyed, melted, stolen, or whatever? I'm actually used to moving the bags and boxes of records in my closet fairly often when I'm searching for a specific title, but I do that slightly less often than I used to because I've put most of the rare titles into my iTunes library. 7/8/2011
