Professionally produced - as you would expect from something broadcast by BBC Radio Four - and interesting listening.
The documentary soundtrack would be nice to have - can anyone identify all the tracks?
If any of you were there at the time, is this how "disco" music really started?
Yes, a good listen. It jumps around a bit chronologically but hopefully, your average Radio 4 listener will now think there is more to disco than SNF and wearing a silly nylon afro.
Great description of the difference between The Loft and The Gallery. Nicky Siano should write a book as he tells a good story.
The tracks I heard are
1. party party get funky get down lets jam ?
2. bourgie bourgie - ashford + simpson
3. house party - fred wesley
4. get down with the philly jump - instant funk
5. slow tune
6. love epidemic - trammps
7. aint no mountain high enough - inner life
8. slow tune
9. a little bit of love ?
10. night fever - bee gees
11. free again - martha reeves
12. good times - chic
13. getaway - salsoul orchestra
14. slow tune
15. loves theme - love unlimited orchestra
Can anyone fill in the gaps (or fix my errors) ?
I hope people outside the UK can hear this. If not, please reply to this thread.
Perhaps not much that longtime disco aficionados won't already know, but I enjoyed the program. It was a nice, interesting choice getting someone a bit outside of the disco realm like Martha Reeves to host. Noticed they did a good job editing down to the good portions of her track "Free Again." Her voice was already going way downhill when she did that one.. Nicky Siano's comments got a few good laughs out of me too..
I'm glad that they explored (and let Steve Dahl offer his point of view) the idea of homophobia and racism being a part of the disco backlash. I get the impression that it's something that either gets repeated without any rebuttal/challenge, or gets skimmed over altogether.
I believe this one was Groove On Down by Dunn Pearson, Jr.

What's great is that it's available to listen to on the BBC iPlayer for those of us who weren't able to listen to it live. Will have a listen tonight from home. Cheers for pointing this out.

I actually quite enjoyed it myself. A bit difficult to figure out who was talking at times, but on the whole thought it was a really good documentary.

pretty good, needed about 90 more minutes and it would be perfect! a video of this would be fantastic-to see some of the images of what they were speaking on,and to see their faces would be very powerful. much love to martha reeves. of course she had one of the ultimate early dance records, but kind of felt she was out of place considering her disco output was more jump on the bandwagon than anything else. ms.gaynor has probably done a million of these disco documentaries, but she might have been a better choice.
... just in case anyone missed it ...
That was greatMarcusGarveyLive,
ABC Radio in Australia allows podcast downloads of it's radio programs, does BBC Radio Four?
