"So Many Men" Miguel Brown

"I Need A Man" Grace Jones
Hi - I need to make a compilation of very gay songs for this drag troupe I DJ with, and I need a little help. The songs are to be used for performace, and I'm looking for songs that are explicitly gay, have gay lyrics...not just songs with relevance to queer people like "I Will Survive" or "You Make Me Feel Mighty Real" or "Shame." Not just songs with relevance to queer people but songs that are undeniably HOMOSEXUAL. Ha ha. I already own quite a few: Modern Rocketry - "Homosexuality", Skatt Bros - "Walk The Night", Southshore Commission - "Free Man", Carl Bean - "I Was Born This Way", and all the Man 2 Man songs. Any suggestions are appreciated!! :)

The Boystown Gang - Cruisin' The Streets
Eartha Kitt - I Love Men (okay, Eartha is a straight woman, but the song was written by gay producer Jacques Morali)
Dennis Parker - Like An Eagle
Macho - I'm A Man (not technically a gay song, but certainly marketed towards us)
Elton Motello - Jet Boy Jet Girl
Almost anything by Gina X Performance (Be A Boy, No GDM, Nice Mover, Casablanca, Exhibitionism)
Do you mind if a straight guy contributes?!
Sex O'Clock USA's 'You're My Man' and Leroy Burgess's 'Miss Thang' from the early '90s (with its spoken intro, 'hope he has a big enough club'!!!) sound pretty gay to me! Does South Shore Commission's 'Free Man' carry a hidden(?) gay message, or have I heard wrong?
Like Forrrce, I am curious a "Free Man." Was there a clever double entendre I missed or something so obvious it went right over my head?
Hey infrasound, how about "I Called U" by Lil Louis. That has a definite gay message in it.
Find them and destroy them!
"Boy" by Chas Jankel
"He's A Friend" by Eddie Kendkricks
...
Although "Free Man" often gets claimed as a gay classic, on closer listen, I think I would place that song in the category of "songs that are relevant to queer people" but not explicitly gay. I've always listened to it as a gay man, and filtered the lyrics through my way of thinking...so it sounds pretty gay to me, a predominantly male disco group singing lyrics like "Girl, I'm a free man and talking/bragging about it" and "I know you understand/ Why I don’t want no married man/ They say 'You’re the only one' /When all they want is to have a little fun". To me, it is a song about getting burned by the closeted married man who goes to the gay clubs and messes around with guys but doesn't have the guts to divorce his wife and be gay (which there are plenty of even today)...but to most, since a female vocalist sings on parts of the song, it just seems like a hetero adultery song. Nonetheless, the song is on tons of gay compilations and is played by a lot of gay DJs. I don't know if Bunny Sigler is gay, but he sure looks gay!! But "Free Man" is definitely no "Male Stripper" or "I Was Born This Way." Heeehee. Thanks for all the feedback/replies, everyone! There's a lot of songs in there I haven't heard. Time to start my mp3 & vinyl hunt....Keep em comin'. :)

Graham Start - Thanks for the list of Gina X songs. I just heard "No G.D.M." for the first time a couple of months ago, and I love it. I was wondering what songs to look for next!
Also, the Macho "I'm a Man" song - I have that 12" and it has the campiest gay artwork ever - two men on the front, one in a white t-shirt facing forward, and one man from behind in a black leather jacket with the word "macho" written across his back...and the whole back side is a sweaty, hairy man's chest! It's definitely in my top 5 gayest-looking records.
A couple of 90's tracks:
"Ditch The Bitch" by Zac Infinity
"Work It Girlfriend" by Jack and Jill
and a track by Morell I believe is called "This Is My Party"
These tracks are gayer than IKEA on Super Bowl Sunday.

Is that Leroy Burgess song recorded under his name, or was he producing?

Sorry MARCIO, but HE'S A FRIEND is a GOSPEL song! Eddie K is singing about GOD - "He (God) is a friend of mine".
About gay songs: you can try some ROCK'N'ROLL classics like REBEL REBEL (BOWIE) or TOM ROBINSON's GLAD TO BE GAY...

There's more to this than meets the eye. Did you look at the man's sunglasses?Originally Written by infrasound
This might not have been intentional, but once pointed out, you'll never see the cover in the same light. Turn the back upside down. Now what does it look like? (Thanks go to Jussi for telling me about that one.)...and the whole back side is a sweaty, hairy man's chest! It's definitely in my top 5 gayest-looking records.
BTW, the Macho II LP has even gayer artwork. Unfortunately, that's about the only interesting thing about it.
Another 90s number, perhaps best forgotten: Fierce Men On Wax: "Go Girl". Somewhat amusing drag cattiness over feeble house beats.
Hey, I remembered a few more gay songs,
AIN'T NOBODY STRAIGHT IN L.A., by THE MIRACLES - this one was released in the mid 70's as the follow up single to LOVE MACHINE. At the end of the song, THE MIRACLES take a car and go to a gay bar to have some fun... Far-out lyrics for the mid-70's, eh?
CLOSET QUEEN, by HARRISON KENNEDY - this obscure song was recorded by Harrison Kennedy on his one and only solo album, called HYPNOTIC MUSIC (he was a member of the soul group CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD). One of the few songs about coming out of the closet in the history of soul music, this one was released by INVICTUS RECORDS in the early 70's (1972 or 73, I guess).

Oh, my...those sunglasses just ooze homosexuality! As for the back cover, I really miss the pre-waxing days of hairy men, but let me not get off topic...this is, after all, a forum about music.
Loverde - Die hard lover
Paul Parker - Right on target
Divine - Shoot your shot
Divine - You think you're a man
Man Parrish - Man made
Man 2 man - Male stripper
Felix & Jarvis - Make it rise
Pet shop boys - NewYork city boy
Drop tank - Homophobixxx
If you buy this record your life, will be better.
Yes, it's under his own name on the Konkrete label.Originally Written by infrasound
Another track for your compilation could be 'Bring On The Newsboy' by The Newsboys. How about 'Another Man (Is Twice As Nice)' by Tout Sweet for your 'morning music' set?!
What would you do without your muesli...where would you be without a bowl?

"Another Man" by Barbara Mason.
"Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood
"Cruisin' The Streets" by Boystown Gang
"I'll Be Your Man" by DeMann
"Who's Your Boyfriend" by Eric
"I'm So Hot for You" by Bobby 'O'
"Wide Receiver" by Michael Henderson
Also, this might not be as "gay" as you'd like it but Salsoul Orchestra's "You're Just The Right Size"always worked for me. :D
Michael Henderson - Wide Receiver Gaaaaaaay? Please let me in on the reason(s), as this wouldn't appear an obvious choice to my dumb brain.
BTW: I loved this piece of uptempo funk (c125 BPM), but didn't understand anything of American Football terminology at the time. That would have to wait until my involvement with the first local American Football team in about 1984.
Do you know the Charo version of "You're just the right size" ? DELICIOUS. It's in her first Salsoul album.
And what about another gay anthem.... "Plato's retreat" by Joe Thomas?
Another enourmously gay sounding track I rediscovered recently is "Let's try once again" by the Black Light Orchestra on canadian RCA records. This is a disco version of the Julio Iglesias standard, and, believe me, people went crazy when a dj friend of mine played it (after I recorded it for him on a CD)a few weeks ago in a gay party on the riviera
...puts me in mind of a record by High Life called 'Switch Hitter', which is a baseball term(?). The song itself is about a desirable hunk who's wasted on da wimmin...Originally Written by QUINNY
Old ground, but isn't there an earlier version of 'I Was Born This Way' by Valentino?
Yes, after doing a quick Google - it looks like Valentino first did "I Was Born This Way" in 1975 and put it out on a Motown-distributed label called Gaiee. (sounds like "gaaaaaay" ha ha) Then he met Carl Bean (maybe at church) and he became the singer/star of the song. Weird, I had always thought that Carl Bean WAS Valentino...but glad the confusion is cleared up.
