What Did You Think Of THe Oscars?

I'd be interested in what the board members thought of last evening's Oscar telecast from the deservedness of recipients to the fashion disasters & successes. Can I mention three names?: Miss Gwyneth Paltrow and her goth princess see-thru top with saggy breasts just a-hanging there. Or J-Lo in her pink satin mattress with Valley of the Dolls Neely O'Hara hairdo? Or Jennifer Connelly in her bland flesh-toned little ragpicker getup with the the scarf around her neck (Keefe said she looked like she had a cold). And, as someone pointed out..."the center square" should NOT be invited to host the Oscars!

I though it was okay. I haven't seen most of the movies that got nominations, so I can't really say which recipient was or wasn't deserving. The biggest news was Halle Berry winning the Best Actress Oscar and Denzel Washington's win for Best Actor. While I didn't see the movies that those two were nominated for, I think it's cool that they won. I wish that Paul McCartney had won for Best Song. I was happy that "For The Birds" won for Best Animated Short Film. I thought it was funnier than "Monsters, Inc.", the film it was shown with in theatres. And I got to see what the Kodak Theatre looks from the inside (I've been outside of it when I went to that mall). It looks like a nice venue.

My Oscar highlights:



Woody Allen's appearance (rivalled only by Katharine Hepburn's early '70's appearance to present a special Oscar to a producer) was the most deligtful moment for me. I never thought I would ever see that happen. Also, he was very funny, charming and amazingly, youthful looking! What did he do?



Robert Redford calling Barbra Streisand "Babs"!!! (Doesn't she just HATE that???)



The Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson filmed segment. In fact, all the filmed segments were good, especially the Errol Morris opening segment on what movies people loved (although those "People" were more often than not famous folks like Susan Sontag and others I can't recall now.)



The Cirque du Soleil segment was pretty fascinating--maybe too much going on--but an improvement from the Debbie Allen choreographed tap dance routine to the theme from "Saving Private Ryan" days.



Denzel & Halle win in the same evening--who would have thought that would happen????



Clever intros written by the likes of David Mamet & Buck Henry. ( Also saw Carrie Fisher's name in the writing credits). Somehow, the patter in the intros seemed more literate, less embarrassing than in the past. However Bruce Vilanch's jokes for the Whoopster seemed stale--too much Hollywood Squares overexposure?

Yes I did catch it Marky. Yes I was happy to see African-Americans get Oscars.

Though J Lo had on a Victorian dress, nothing can hide that awesome ass, ouch

Someone said Cameron Diaz's nipples were a sight to behold but sadly I missed 'em. I liked the shot Whoopi took at Ashcroft by covering the Oscar statue's genitals. Oops, I'm trying to be good

I'm just amazed that Toth was admitted to the Oscars! He the guy that the Best Documentary was based on (shirtless with the little loin cloth and playing the violin - and, believe it or not, he was conservatively dressed for him!). Those of you from San Francisco have probably seen this character out on the sidewalks and in the Bart/Muni station fiddling his fiddle and singing up a storm in some unknown language. A site to behold only in San Francisco!

I've caught the last half hour of the Oscars because I was watching SUPERFLY. I didn't even know that Sidney Poitier won an Lifetime Achievement Award! Good for him as well as Denzel Washington and Halle Berry because it was long overdue!!!!!

2.Cameron Diaz's hair was f**ked up

3.Whats up with that HUGE "Aqua Net" 60's hairdo that Jeniffer Lopez was sporting?

Did you see either or both Denzel and Halle movies? If so what your opinion of the performance especially Halle's? I didn't see either.

The Oscars are good only for gawking at tackily dressed celebrities making fools of themselves and trying to hide their disappointment. The only surprise touch of Class in evidence was the Cirque du Soleil act. Everything else represented Hollywood's own marketed world which does not have much to do with actual acting or actual Cinema. This year they cynically decided let's polish our image a bit and hand some statues to black actors.

- Avoid the multiplex whenever possible and support the arthouse.

In another Web Site, these were referred to as the Politically Correct Oscars. It seems to me that Whoppie can't make a joke unless it has racial overtones. As for Sidney, he deserved what he got; he's a terrific actor---one of the the real few actors in Hollywood---long overdue. Danzel is also a good actor; I don't think he was deserving of an Oscar this time around, but I won't debate that since he's surrounded by mediocre actors. All in all, Washington, if he keeps up the good work, will be the next Poitier. Halle, definetely not Oscar material. I guess Hollywood, in their dispair to make up for past sins, threw in the towel and gave the Oscar to the poor soul making it Politically Correct.

I find all awards shows boring as hell so I tape them. That way I can skip, "And I wanna thank my Mom, my dog, my mistress...", and so on when I watch. Plus, I couldn't care less WHO is wearing WHAT designed by WHOM. (I know, take my 'fag' card but it's just not fun.) I haven't watch all my tape and I haven't seen enough of the movies to make valid comments. The one moment I did like: Whoopi describing Moulin Rouge as one of the five Best nominees. "And to think --- apparently all of this was done WITHOUT a director."



Thank you, Whoopi. Assessing the movies have seen, Baz Lurhman should have been on the list of Best Directors.

The new Oscar Urban Legend is that Will Smith punched Ethan Hawke in the restroom at the Oscars Sunday night and Will & Jada were asked to leave the ceremony!!!



OK, Ethan was bearing a "bruise" on his cheek when he was photographed in closeup, but it turns out that it was lipstick from Denzel Washington's wife Pauletta that never got wiped off.



Supposedly, Will & Jada received a phone call during the ceremony informing them that their infant child was running a fever of 103 degrees and they rushed the child to the hospital. Therefore, when Will's category, Best Actor, was announced...the Smith's were missing. Their "relative" Maggie Smith, seated next to the couple was asked to pick up the Oscar, should he win. (Yeah, right--fat chance THAT was gonna happen).



Ian McKellan, enjoying his "out" actor status, finally offered a glimpse of his "boyfriend", who he's mentioned on Leno, Letterman & SNL. The 20-something young man with the long dark hair and the 60-something English actor looked like perfect casting for a new film version of Thomas Mann's "Death In Venice". Ian was constantly photographed holding the youth's hand or with his hand on the young man's leg.

I was really hoping for Ian to win cause I was anticipating a big, wet, sloppy tongue-wagging KISS was gonna occur before Sir Ian took to the stage. Damn,maybe next year.

If you listen to Phil Hendrie, his character Doug Danger wanted Ian to win too. He wanted this year to be the year of the gay, not blacks. Very funny stuff

Oh, and one other "couple" making the post Oscar party scene: wacko "Angel" Farrah Fawcett & Madonna's interior designer/restauranteur brother Christopher Ciccone, who Maddie "outed" in her "Truth Or Dare" flick. Just thought you might be amused to know.

I totally agree with Nicky. I think I wore out the fast forward button to watch this ordeal. I couldn't watch it live anyway as it was broadcast Monday morning due to time difference between LA and Tokyo.



I thought Nathan Lane packed more jokes in his 3 minutes than Whoopi in her 5 hours. And his were actually funny.



The rest was forgettable, and Halle's thank-you's were over-acted. Perhaps that is her trademark, but I have to confess I have not seen any of her movies. Didn't she collect $ 1 million to bare her breasts recently? And wasn't she involved in a hit-and-run?



Denzel is one of my favorite actors, but I hated the movie and the character he got his oscar for. He seems to be making very random script choices - Philadelphia (wasn't Will Smith in that, too?) and then Under Siege... nuff said...



And sorry people, I HATE Nicole Kidman. Can't stand her. She is soooooo full of herself. And what is with that hair, Mr. Crowe?



OK - enough bitching, you might get the wrong idea. That was a JOKE!!!!!!!!
