One of the things I like so much about disco are the chants that feature in so many of its songs.I would like to know your favourite chants. Here are five of mine:
5.YOU CAN DO IT:Al Hudson & One Way..."dance,shake your body down, you know you can do it, get UP, shake your body down, theres really nothin to it.." repeat..
4.KING TIM III(PERSONALITY JOCK):Fatback Band..."do it to me,and I'll do it to you.."
3.HOLLER: John Davis & The Monster Orchestra.."you really do your best, when you put it to the test,..so holler for me baby cos I never get enough"...(I can't work out all the words)
2.STOMP:Brothers Johnson..."Stomp, step down again, put your feet..stomp you don't wanna quit, put ya ear when you're feelin it, take it to the top.." (again, don't know the lyrics for sure)
1.CONTACT:Edwin Starr..."I sure like what you got, you sho nuff looking hot (dance),I sure like what you got, you sho nuff looking hot, (dance)...come on and dance..."

hey, boogienights .....how would you define a "chant" .........(just so that I know how to respond).
Yes, same question. Does it have to be repeated more than once? Otherwise, it would seem that any early "rap" sections could qualify. "Stomp" is the only one of those songs I know well and I can't place where the "chant" happens. This thread will go out of control if someone doesn't establsih a fairly firm "criterion" of what constitutes a "chant".
Guess the most obvious would be the Michael Zagar Band, "Let's All Chant." He got everyone making the oo-ee, oo-ee sound on the dance floor. And then there's "Le Freak," by Chic. That got everyone chanting. And what about "Que Sera Mi Vida" by the Gibson Brothers? We always sang the "ignition go!" part at the top of our lungs...does that count as a chant??
I really like the butch title chant on this late-70s New York classic. It's also got the 'freak-freak' high-pitched disco chant that 'Lets All Chant' popularized & spawned a zillion 'ooey-ooey' imitators.
...ya gotta beat the street......
Like when we all sing.....Get Down Tonight, Get Down Tonight...do a little dance. Get......?

Are you ready? Are you ready for this? Do you like it? Do you like it like this?
Disco chants are a tribal frenzy.
"Because there's music in the air."
"gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get a, gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get a, gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get a, gotta get away, gotta get away, gotta get a..."
"chicky chicky, ahh ahh - chicky chicky, ahh ahh..."
"ooh la la, chicky chicky, ooh la la - ooh la la, chicky chicky, ooh, la la..."
"where'd you learn to funk like that? c'est bon! - where'd you learn to funk like that? c'est bon!..."
"do it, do it, do it to me, do it to me - do it, do it, do it to me, do it to me..."
and, of course, there's always flipping the mixer's input switch, on and off, so the crowd can scream:
"One Two, Three!" (shake your body down)
"One Two, Three!" (shake your body down, to me)
"One Two, Three!" (shake your body down)
"One Two, Three awwww Shake!"

Well the dictionary defines it as a monotonous singsong voice, but I guess I would also add that it is a repeated phrase, one that is talked over and over again.
The chant happens at the end of "Stomp".Its hot! I am only interested in disco chants, as I hate rap.

Yes, Michael Zager qualifies with "ooh ooh" and Chic with "le freak, c'est Chic". Not so sure about your Gibson Brothers ad=lib...I guess!

thanks, Boogienights, for the added info on what "disco chants" are !
I'd have to say my favorite -- and I hope it meets your def --- is:
"You sexy thing you turn me on. Keep rockin' steady all night long"
(oft repeated in 1977's sultry instrumental "Quiet Village")

Here, for some reason this one has been playing in my head for days now...
Dance and shake your tambourine, your funky tambourine, tambourine, tambourine....

By the way, that Dancing Lady on Youtube (tengobaila, artemisbell) is amazing, she must've been a riot at the Discos back in the days.. have you seen the Mandolay video ?, the first one out of her three different interpretations/entries is the best IMO.

I could never get into that Peech Boys song, Nrgroove.I'm not aware of the chanting in there? Of course KDavid I love that slam bam chant in "Get Up and Boogie" very funky..such a great song..Stephan yes, a very laid back chant by one of the masters..FranceJoli fan yes I remember that song from high school..unfortunately..and Mix Machine yes, I love that song too, although I have it by Inner City Express..

Oh me neither. If ever there was an over-rated track it's that IMO. Whenever I see a tribute to Larry Levan or Paradise Garage they always go on about the Peech Boys & I just can't see what all the fuss was about, & i totally love that early 80s 'boogie' funkier electronic disco sound generally.
...ya gotta beat the street......
oh glad its not just me SandraDee. I have it on a West End compilation and I think that came out in 1983 the same year as another track on there did by Shirley Lites called "Heat You Up"...now that I like...that should get more credit I think.

Yes you're right, they were both '83 & I also totally love 'Heat You Up...' by Shirley Lites which was quite 'hi-nrg' for West End at the time, & a very good example of hi-nrg at that. I got the impression at the time that many DJs didn't play it because they weren't sure how it would fit in with their other stuff as it was too hi-nrg for funky clubs & too soulful for hi-nrg clubs. The 80s was so tiresome with all the disco sub-genres that sprung up just so that people didn't have use the word 'disco'!
