Thats really sad. I loved that heavy bass sound in Slave/Aurra.
In my opinion along with Bernard Edwards......the best bass player I`ve ever heard, died about a week ago. Adams was the Slave sound as well as Aurra and a few others. I didn`t see this posted anywhere else here.

"You can dance forever if you want to"
Hey Zef: I was getting kinda worried for a minute there. I was beginning to think that nobody knew who Mark Adams was around here. One of the most important people in The Funk.
I haven't followed their music, but I do dig that Slide and Son of Slide. RIP.
Disco Funk
Well Disco Funk: I figured you would have picked up on this somewhere. Mark Adams was very comparable to Bernard Edwards very thumpable bass. Well I know this is a "dance music" forum but disco was a derivative of funk and Mark Adams was one of the high priests of that thumpable bass sound. Gene Perez and Jeff (The Funk) Walker are real close to his sound.
That`s him on Odyssey`s "Inside Out" and Aurra "Are You Single" as well as "Watching You" and "Just A Touch Of Love" and "Showtime". to be honest with you Slave was looking at Chic. The even hired Gene Orloff for "Showtime".
Good look Disco Funk on the Al Jackson thang.
Remicks: Maaaaan "Inside Out" is such a damned good record. Funk bass with strings, four on the floor. Yes, yes,yes hehehe. Orgasmic funkateer! "Showtime" is a great album. Wheeeew!
Just to mention that Mark Adams didn't actually play on 'Inside Out'. Although clearly inspired by Mark's Bass on 'Watching You' the bass Player on this occasion was Sandy Anderson from "Unlimited Touch'. Jimmy Douglass was involved in both projects
As a bass player too Mark Adams was definitely in my top 5 bass players along with the late Bernard Edwards. May he rest in peace
P.S Sorry Tyree the bass on Aurra was played by Steve Washington The founder/producer of both Slave and Aurra
yes, I liked Adams playing but it seems many people aren't mentioning some of the true innovators of bass playing here. Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Larry Graham and my personal favorite, Andy Fraser.....Fraser in his day was simply untouchable on bass. On Free's "Mr Big" he worked a blooping tuba sound into his bass and he went even farther on his album "Andy Fraser Band" on which bass is the only guitar on the entire record....it's hard to find but worth the search because in addition to his awesome bass player he sings just like Paul Rodgers. More bass players of note: Louis Johnson, TM Stevens, Bootsy Collins, Duck Dunn, Marcus Miller, and especially, Motown's James Jamerson. Finally, of recent bass players, you should definitely check out Daryl Jones....he is smearing some SERIOUS grease on old Rolling Stones songs like "Satisfaction", "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Gimme Shelter"....I can't believe how smart and lucky they were to get him. 3/25/2011
You`re right Cory there a lot of great bass players but happily not of those died last week.....which is good news some of those people are still with us and as a future label boss (that`s me!) I get a chance to pick their brains. This was intended to be a memorial for Mark.
Actually I`ve mentioned Jamerson and Babbitt in a recent post. I believe it`s the Motown vs. Philly post. A very good work of art that post is.
That`s funny Shamir because somebody else told me that same thing about Mark not playing on those records. There`s a contingent out there that says he did and there those that said he didn`t. My copy of the 12"" of Aurra`s "Are You Single" has Mark Adams on it as well as" Drac" Hicks as guitarist. There`s maybe only one way to find out ........ask Salsoul! Interesting.
It reminds me of the Van McCoy post where we were trying to figure who actually played what.
I am Steve Washington The Fearless Leader of Slave
Mark Adams was not on Are you single or make up your mind by Aurra
I played bass and drums and guitar on Are you single and make up your mind
Mark Adams played on the first Aurra LP.
It's always a thrill when actual artists from the great era visit here - welcome Steve Washington. Can I just say that I always really liked 'Please Dont Go' from '84 - very under-rated IMO.
...ya gotta beat the street......
Yes Steve, you are very welcome to the board.
Just got in some more sad news as Steve Arrington announced that Mark "Drac" Hicks passed away yesterday. Marc was the guitarist on the "Slide" track (and of course others). He was only 16 years old when he recorded that one.
R.I.P.
Inside out was Mark Adams on bass .Master of Slave was used by jimmy Douglass without groups permission

Hey Fearless: All of these are opinions.....and they are all valid or invalid depending on the person. That`s why opinions take the subjunctive mood in the subordinate clause because they are subjective. Just opinions. I`m glad you joined the debate but you`re a little late.
