Two brothers, Stony Browder Jr. and August Darnell, together with Andy Hernandez (Coati Mundi)and Cory Daye form Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.
Later, August Darnell, Coati Mundi, and Adriana Kaegi (not sure of the spelling on her last name)become Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Darnell also co-produces "There for thr Grace of God...".
Stoony Browder Jr. goes to put out such records as "Native New Yorker". He also becomes Don Armando's Band---Deputy of Love.
Hello Fantomas, just a quick question. Who was the first artist of the song 'There But For The Grace Of God Go I'? Was it 'Kid Creole and the Coconuts' or was it 'Machine'? I have heard both, but only own the Machine version. An early 'Thanks for your help'. All the best, DJ Phil
August Darnell co-wrote "There But for the Grace of God Go I" for Machine in 1979. Darnell then regrouped with Savannah Band member Andy Hernandez (also known as Coati Mundi) as Kid Creole & the Coconuts, one of the most influential bands of the 80's, and by most accounts, a major influence on Prince and Morris Day and the Time. Kid Creole (named after the Elvis movie King Creole) and the Coconuts achieved major success overseas, but never quite made it as big in the U.S. A Savannah Band comeback album was released in 1984 entitled Calling All Beatniks.
Keep the faith and everything will come your way as time marches on!
Hey guys! Did you see the "Downtown 81" movie, with Jean-Michel Basquiat? Filmed in 1981 in NY streets? There you can see Kid Creole, Coati Mundi and the Coconuts doin' "Que pasa (Me no Pop I)" in a club, plus lots of new wave stars.
This film is known also as "New York Beat Movie" and was released in USA in 2000 for copyright reasons.
