The other day Mixmachine and I were checking an old 45. The song in this record was played at certain Jersey and NY discos prior to 1977 or 1976. The music has accordion and a lot of percussion in it. It's fast. It's sound, I would say, is a mixture of European and Latin---the voices sounded Mexican, but who knows. The name of the record is "Si Si... No No" under a CARRERE label. But what really grabbed my was the name of the group:

    HIPOCAMPELIFANCOTAMELOS.

If you can beat this name, please, be my guest.

I don't know if I can beat that crazy name, but this group name comes awfully close -- Mad Dog Fire Department. Released a funky single in 1979 called Cosmic Funk on the Shield label (subsidiary of T.K.).

The weirdest bandname I've ever heard of was not a disco group but most likely a rock group and the band name is "Red Buttocks". I haven't heard of their music but on one of those 70's programs they showed some snippet footage of a UK music show "Old Grey Whistle Test" and the host Eric Idle was introducing the acts and here's what he said:

    Hi. Welcome to...Whistle Test.

Tonight on Whistle Test, we've got ... Rex Higgins, Steve Flea, the Wretched Admiral Sphincter, Grunties, Hot Nudges, Red Buttocks, and Toad the Wet Sprocket, so... it promises to be... really good.

I just couldn't stop laughing and constantly rewind to the bit where Eric Idle says "Red Buttocks" and laugh my head off. Who in their right mind would want to name their group "Red Buttocks".

Another rock group with an unusual name is "Showaddywaddy" which was a famous UK rock group that hit the charts during 1975 to 1978.

As for disco/funk/soul here are some unusual names:

    Muscle Shoals Horns

    Osibisa

    Yambu

    Zulema

    Gary Toms Empire

    Fat Larry's Band

    Four Below Zero

    Chubukos

    Chee Chee & Peppy

    Beginning Of The End

When I was working in NYC I had a client who gave me a tape of his group. It was called "Bloody Stooling Anus." The name's pretty nasty, but the music although not dance, was pretty good.

The two best/worst/oddest band names I remember were for punk bands back in the 80's. Yeah, it's not disco, but what names!

    Gang Green & His Amputations

Claude Coma & The IV's (my first name is Claude, so I'm kinda partial to that one) :D

Eric Idle didn't present the Old Grey Whistle Test; he was actually one of the members of Monty Python's Flying Circus! Therefore what you were watching was a spoof sketch, based on the fact that groups on the OGWT generally had stupid names.

Sorry to say that I think you'll find that nearly all of the act names mentioned in the sketch are ficticious, including your favourite "Red Buttocks". This is with the exception of "Toad the wet sprocket", which was a proper group name thrown in at the end for satirical effect.

    Regards,
    Darren
