A fun morning on "The Love Boat"

Those of us in Australia will surely be welcoming our new Channel 11 which offers "the Love Boat" at 11 am and 2am. I caught todays episode featuring Charo, so felt like I had to discuss it with people that might actually know (and surely care) what I'm talking about...A middle aged couple, the man being played by the guy who played Georges Dad in Seinfeld are onboard the Pacific Princess with their four children. Corey Feldman plays the young boy.He wants some alone time, but it seems she is knee deep in motherly duties and he soon gets frustrated. When can a man get some alone time? Meanwhile the crew are delighted to have Spanish sensation April (Charo) to inject some salsa sensation onboard. In a terrific performance she sings her Salsoul classic rendition of the theme and boogies at the end of it.(I'm actually really do love her version of "the Love Boat").However she feels pigeonholed and quips "You know when you're in showbusiness, they expect monkey business". Everyone laughs. So its decided she can try some of the other duties the crew perform.A frustrated Georges Dad is downstairs after being passed over for the kids AGAIN by housewifey.April decides a boogie would do him good, but much to the crews dismay, she is a little too sexy for the role...she also later tries her hand at being a bingo announcer, but reads the Bingo balls in Spanish would you BELIEVE which no one except the Mexican man can understand. He wins a portable colour tv."Can you believe he is Mexican?" she asks the incredulous crew... But she gets disillusioned when she feels like she can't do anything right. She skips her nightly singing performance and just as she walks into the room, she sees an ex singer on stage singing a love song! Well, this is too much for her and she runs out of the room.Housewifey spots her talking to Georges Dad and expects foul play. But all April and G's dad are doing is encouraging one another. The crew convince her that she is still needed and that even they have things they hate about their jobs. Her jokes start up again.Meanwhile, housewifey is angry at G's Dad but he manages to convince her that its her he really loves, kids and all.The show ends with a freeze frame of April throwing her papers carelessy in the air whilst the crew all laugh. The end...

That`s a pretty good description of how I remembered "The Love Boat". Kinda reminds me of "TV Guide" circa 1978. I haven`t seen that show in years. There was that copy called "Supertrain" or something like that. I can remember ABC having a very popular lineup back then. Some opposing TV exec called ABC`s lineup "kiddie porn". LOL I remember "Mary Hartmann" but not the "Salsoul Strut" with was the theme music for the show.

Yeah I know its corny but finding shows from the 70s period on mainstream tv these days is rare. And especially when its right from the disco days. There are constant references to disco on the season thats on which is from 78.I often find myself with a stupid smile on my face whilst watching it.Some of the stories are stupid, but I do find myself wanting to find out what happens.Damn you Aaron Spelling! Have never seen Mary Hartman but have the song from Sounds Of Inner City, its great.Don't know the song you speak of.I think what I like about the Love Boat is that it is sweet.Theres so much smutty inuendo and violence on tv, sometimes its nice just to watch something a bit more innocent. And with much funkier fashion...

"The Salsoul Strut" was the edit version of "Mary Hartmann". Strut came out on Better Days Records in 1998. It was the theme cut without the vocals.

I recently got Season 1 of the Love Boat because it was on special. I figured it might be a nice and cheesy way to kill time, but the episodes are actually really well done. The relationship problems they had back then are timeless! :)

For sure Disco Funk.He was a clever writer no doubt about it.I guess the thing that appeared to be so in then was the stupid slapstick style humour. Its in so many 70s shows Starsky and Hutch, Brady Bunch, Charlies Angels etc.But a lot to make up for it.And tyree what do you mean it came out in 1998? Like a reissue?

I believe Joey Negro runs "Better Days Records". Back in 1998 he did an edit of "Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann" where he took out the vocals and extra stuff. He made the cut better and more fluid. It`s called the "Salsoul Strut" Think Faze Action or Loft Classics or "Journey to Phoebus" or "It`s Rough Out Here" or Above Average Black Band. Good ****!!!!
