    A Startling Discovery

It's only taken me 30 odd years to realize this, but I never used to take much (if any) notice of what was written on a record's label.
Me, I'd listen to the track at the record shop, decide whether or not I thought it was any good, take it home, paint a big 'A' on the best dance side with a marker pen, put my name and date purchased somewhere too, take it to the disco, play it and voila! That was my full interaction with it, apart from lifting certain records out of the boxes more often than others and stashing them away, once they became passe.
I never really looked at the credits on those damned things and I'm only beginning to revere them now.
(Ex) DJs, what was it like for you?

Since the record pools distributed dozens of 12” and LP’s every week weeding out the duds was time consuming, scanning labels for hints of the record’s potential before my first test listen helped the process for me, I always listened to certain labels , producers and writers first, also city pressing origins (LA, NYC, Miami, Philly, European) provided musical styles hints, and cover art many times gave away the musical content ( R&B, Disco, Rock, New Wave ), of course this wasn’t a full proof system and many times certain ‘Hits’ got lost in the shuffle until much later after the cut was requested or discovered after visiting other clubs, even today I’m still discovering some sealed good records I never played back them.
The one thing I noticed since visiting this forum is that it is very rare when I can ID any song from the lyrics, I guess that while DJing I was more into the music part of the song and most of the time you are very busy in the booth to keep up with the lyrics anyways, now after all this years I just lay back and listen to some of this old hits and just follow the lyrics to see (listen) what I missed.…

Now, This I can relate to. I didn't even realise that the punters must have been into lyrics, until I visited this site. I was floored at how easily and how quickly those lyrics get snapped up and put into context. Phew!!

No, Giovanni, I'll never become such an anorak. Best left as they were, probably.

It took me a long time before I started reading the labels for anything other than artist and the label itself (TK, Preluce, etc). It wasn't until participating in a conversation with some other dj's about the music and noticing they kept mentioning "the producers" that I realized something was up. It was then I started looking at the fine print, as it were. Up until then, it was all about keeping up with the product from the record pool and getting my hand on some imports. Thankfully, the guys who worked the record stores knew my head and where I worked. Hell, I'd hit the door and they'd start pulling records off shelves. They did it for all their regular dj customers, even holding stuff for you that was selling like crazy because they knew you would want it. It was great. :D
