    Vince Aletti`s Disco Files

I found Vince Aletti's: Disco Files by mistake in Santa Monica yesterday. Very detailed Vince. I like, I like.

That was a good mistake to make tyree_kevin. The book has been reviewed on this site

    http://www.discomusic.com/cds-more/14273_0_3_0_C/

Ive discovered several new tunes and re-visited tunes that Id forgotten about. The book must be a blast for those people who danced at the clubs listed

It's a blast for anyone seriously into dance music. It's nice to read about all the respected classics but what really makes the book is all the detailed info on the more leftfield entries, truly priceless. You keep finding amazing discoqs-veries from the pages. Not cheap in many cases but I got my copy of Bomberos: Ninas for one euro! That's one euro for Ninas!!

I love this book.It really does have some great info in,photos, funny commentary in it and suggestions.Im actually listening to a song now that it talks about "Sunshine Love" by Metal Weeds, its awesome.I use this as I've used Jussi and Alans book to turn me on to music.

Me, never been called a Rude Boy, I do take this as a compliment. Thank you. But Not Cool - in Real Life?! For your information, lots of people think playing the Andre Popp disco version of "The Washerwomen of Portugal" IS very cool.

What a great book. Gives me flashbacks over & over again.

It was a great time to be a DJ in NYC!!!!!

Me & all my DJ friends are in the book so it is especially nice to have a momento of our past!!

The Disco Files and Love Saves The Day are 2 Disco Bibles that are never far from reach. I've read and reread them both countless times.

Ah, you had me worried... like has everybody been into the Washerwomen for years without me knowing?

Well, some of those illustrious figures like the late disco guru Mel Cheren, they may not have time for us fans when we go up and introduce yourselves. And anyway, they can be private persons by nature, not everybody wants to go into conversations with total strangers. Not even about Disco (?!)

Hey Jussi: I take it that "Washerwoman of Portugal" was one of those records you were talking about with the lisping nymphettes in it.

Isn`t Vince a part of this board?

Yes I suppose just because you really like something someone has written or sung they are not obligated to talk to you.Which is a shame really, I think its a bit rude. All I know about the book is that I love it.I have been in contact with quite a few disco folks on Facebook: some are delightful and keep in contact like Pattie Brooks,Bob Esty, Andy Kahn,Evelyn Champagne King and more...others don't bother to get back to you.I think after the deaths of Teena Marie and Bobby Farrell, and the unfortunate reality of the disco era getting further away by the day,I just want my musical heroes to know how their music has touched me.

    Re: Vince Aletti`s Disco Files

The Washerwomen do moan and purr and sigh a lot but they don't actually lisp as there are no words as such. If there were I'm sure they would. Most of those vocalists working in France, Italy etc did not know many words of English apart from "Love", "Maybe" and "Yes", and had only a vague idea of what they were singing about.

I need to expand my horizons. I`m checking out Herbie Hancock`s "Dedications" as I write. That track "Nobu" is one of the blueprints of the jazz-techno movement.

I've had the Disco Files book for a couple years - I ordered it as soon as it came out - but it's just been in the last couple months that I've REALLY been digging through it and reading the columns thoroughly. Great stuff! I keep finding more and more little goodies. I only wish Vince had started back in, say, 1972.

Thats a good point Brian. Ive unearthed several goodies by trawling through the book.
Tunes like Soul Makossa are widely known but tunes such as "I like what i like" by Everyday People are not. Playlists/documentation from this period are scarce. Blues and Soul magazine here in the UK was going strong but was primarily interested in soul/r&b and not the burgeoning disco scene

Was B&S ever interested in disco? I've got copies from the late 70s where they often criticised records for being too disco & regularly slagged off records by Bionic Boogie, Cissy Houston & the like.
