Swing Jazz vs. Big Budget dance

It took me a while to see the connection between Ron Hardy`s love of of say somebody like Duke Ellington (big band dance music with orchestral accompanment) with Philly / Motown (both big band dance musics with strings).

I can remember both VMJ and MAW saying that Philly was based on big-band swing jazz as well as Motown a la George Shearing. I was looking at the track listing for MAW`s "Latin Sounds" and there he is George Shearing.
