There were a lot of rap records out before or around the same time as Rapper's Delight. I think it took off specifically because it was based around the Good Times track which was huge that same time. And I figure Sylvia Robinson was able to muscle her music into some markets to get it air time.
I heard the interview Terri Gross did with Dan Charnas a week ago and it was very eye-opening. Highly recommended.
