I think it is interesting to note(as some already know) that it was disco that kick-started the rap movement.

which is so why Chic (led by the influential/talented N. Rodgers and the late B. Edwards) deserves to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We'll know tomorrow (Wednesday) if they get in.

There were a lot of rap records out before or around the same time as Rapper's Delight. I think it took off specifically because it was based around the Good Times track which was huge that same time. And I figure Sylvia Robinson was able to muscle her music into some markets to get it air time.
