they certainly were big in disco/R&B circles during their 1975-77 heyday, though not much fuss is made of them today. Your thread brings up a question I've wanted to ask ya'll who were in the clubs back then ---- was it the instrumental version of "Dreamin' A Dream" that got played or was it the version with vocals ??? Reason I'm asking is that the "various-artist" LP compilations I've collected seem to feature both in relatively equal numbers. I tend to prefer the one with the soulful vocals.

I never heard the vocal version in a club myself, which may be why I prefer the Instrumental disco version. Heard that everywhere BITD.

Agree with the disco kid...never heard the vocal version in clubs, but the instrumental version was huge.

Regrettably ..... that one predates my club times just a tad (sad eyes)

Now is it my imagination or does:

sound A LOT like an amped up K-JEE (which in turn sounds like amped up
    Santana)

K-JEE (1971!!!!) by the way ------a product of Harvey Fuqua ----who in a few years would bring us Sylvester and his DANCE WITH ME ( IN THE DISCO HEAT)

    Very nice guys, too. :o)
My brother played Trumpet (along with 3 or 4 other guys), during the sessions for the "Do It Your Way" LP.
And "yes".... He had a blast!

    Speaking of Crown Heights Affair

It was only very recently that I FINALLY stumbled upon this elusive tune that was making the rounds in SF clubs BITD ---- which turns out to be by them : ......

How to chase down this song at the time ??? .. . "you know , the song that sort of sounds like happy Indians whoopin' and a hollerin' .... ??? ......

NEVER would have guessed : Crown Heights Affair!!!!

I always like this '82 boogie track that CHA did; & Madonna stole the horn riff 4 years later for 'Open Your Heart'! (I know, I should get a life instead of trying to spot similarities between tracks all the time!)

You guys are awesome. I've been a big fan of this band from day one. I had no idea they were behind France Joli or Empress.

Here's another cut I like from 'em.

I was thrilled when I went to the 2007 'RTP' event & Jerry Bonham played 'You Gave Me Love' by CHA - it's the track that got me onto the floor dancing for the first time that night.

France's NOW! album is a fave. Anderson and Reid did a great job of freshening her up with an r&b sound while still letting her voice soar. Great arrangements and back-up vocals too.

This one has really grown on me over the years:

ahhhhhh the Record Rack...that store was filled to the rafters with disco music. I was lucky enough to have been able to work there and have the opportunity to go thru the collection, as well as the 3 garages that Jake had as well. Plus getting to meet everyone that came in the shop, it was a meeting place for many DJ's BITD.

Even if it's not exactly the same melody, the first 30s reminds me something ...not you ?

I saw the title of the thread and then noticed that unfortunately, the discussion seems to have been diverted away from the actual subject matter.

I wondered if you intended to elaborate on the sense in which you considered Crown Heights Affair's sound to be unique, and how you would compare them to say, Brass Construction (as opposed to Kool & The Gang.)

I also wondered if anyone know whether or not Crown Heights Affair still existed or performed in any shape or form.

Did they ever tour the UK?

I certainly miss the days of real bands comprised of real musicians playing real instruments.

I`ve noticed the correlation between CHA and Brass Construction myself. Both used those latin trumpets to really bring out that full-bodied sound. I once did a topic concerning these two groups and where they were from on another board. I`ve admired how Kenny Dope champions that Brooklyn big-band sound on alot of his comps.
