This thread really got me reconsidering-- while I didn't think of Motown as one of the real disco purveyors, I could easily come up with a second set of 10 big ones...

Running Back & Forth: Edwin Starr
    Still Water: Four Tops
    Mercy Mercy Me: Marvin Gaye
    Keep It Comin': Valerie Simpson
The World Can't Stop Me: Originals
    I Need You: Temptations
My Mistake: Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross
    As: Stevie Wonder
    Big Time: Rick James
Strut Your Stuff: Stone City Band

There are quite a few Rick James songs I like. I just couldn't decide which I preferred. Oh well his proteges, Val Young and Teena Marie, are on my list.

"Machine Gun" the Commodores 5. "Anyway you Like It" Thelma Houston 6. "Pops We Love You" various Motown artists 7. "It Must Be Magic" Teena Marie 8. "Where Are You Now?" Jermaine Jackson 9. "Hard to Get" Rick James 10. "Dance Party" Martha and the Vandellas

ooooh ....good call, discodjinn, with 1974's "My Mistake" (duet of Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross). I've always thought that tune was highly danceable ! Glad you reminded me of how much I dig that tune.

    SHIRLEY,
this can't be all of those amongst us who have a thought on their choices !! ...(???)

It is HARD ! ..but give it a try ( no one's gonna print it on your facebook page ) .

most appearances thus far : DON'T LEAVE THIS WAY on 7 out of 10 lists.
Many singular appearances ....too many to enumerate ...

I find the variables fascinating ..... lots of us seem to prefer Motown's funkier tunes .... and speaking of which:

Biggest surprise so far : who amongst us would ever have guessed that Marky's favorite disco song from Motown is:

GIVE IT TO ME BABY by Rick James (wide-eyed X3) (seriously would you have put money on that horse??)

So now, maybe you've mulled it over some and are ready to commit :

YOUR TOP TEN FAVORITE MOTOWN DISCO SONGS :

    go for it !!

    *****

and yes tmob --- ties are permitted (maximum of ten)

And why is my choice of "GIVE IT TO ME BABY" such a shocker????
It is one of the most infectious dance records EVER!!!
And I first heard it at Trocadero.

    I donno ....your #1 ??? really?

I guess I'm having a hard time picturing you in the middle of the Troc floor miming along to"give it to me baby , I 'll make you holler you've had enough!" while you gyrate your leather clad hips !!! LOL !! ( hmmm..... or maybe I do have a vague memory of someone doing that ---- OMGosh ....was that you !!! )

And certainly it is a fine fine fine fine choice------------- even IF ... (thus far ) ..................yours is the only TOP TEN to include it ........ (snarky tongue out)

Well of course it is a classic ... and.... as you well know Mr. Chartman...... GIVE IT TO ME BABY went all the way to the top of the disco chart ... #1 -- for three weeks.
Still I'm a little surprised that LOVE HANGOVER or DLMTW ((( from the Buzzby days ))) didn't reserve a higher place in your heart than it .

And hey i totally expected you to counter with .....and what about your #4 song , Mr remicks ... ALL NIGHT LONG (tongue out) I don't see that making any other lists (tongue out again) .

And I was honestly surprised that as I comprised my list that one kept working its way so high. I liked it then and still do now. Well I had a wonderful brief and much needed romance right about that time ... and I'll never forget that person , knowing i liked that song, had taken the time to transcribe the lyrics on a piece of paper. I can still picture that paper , kind of crinkled from his having kept it in his pocket , and the painstakingly crooked lettering printed on it in blue. Certain memories like that impact our favorites.

    all night ...... all night

    *****

ah there's discokicks list !!nice one!!

still no GIVE IT TO ME BABY though

but no ALL NIGHT LONG either .... (sad eyes w/ tongue out)

and yet still more first timers !!!

This shows how many great tracks came out of Motown after its 60s 'heyday'. I get so fed up with music journalists & the like saying Motown sucked after the 60s - so not true; in fact I think it was just getting into its stride in 1970! I found it extremely difficult to get it down to 10 -there were dozens of others that i love.

The lack of "Date With The Rain" on this survey is staggering to me! So...

    1. Eddie Kendricks - "Date With The Rain"
    2. Bonnie Pointer - "Heaven Must Have Sent You"
    3. Diana Ross - "The Boss"
    4. Carl Bean - "I Was Born This Way"
    5. Rick James - "Give It To Me Baby"
    6. Jermaine Jackson - "Let's Get Serious"

And you can fill in the rest with any Eddie Kendricks Philly stuff of your choice.

Here's my Motown faves back when I was the turntable addict:

    1. Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
    2. Law of The Land - The Temptations
    3. Down to Love Town - The Originals
    4. Love Hangover - Diana Ross
    5. Give Me Your Love - Sisters Love
    6. It Should Have Been Me - Yvonne Fair
    7. Erucu - Jermaine Jackson
    8. Bad Weather - The Supremes
    9. Deception - The Dynamic Superiors
    10. Big John - The Undisputed Truth

And now that I see the list I can't believe "Girl, You Need a Change of Mind" is missing! Well, you pick one, tear it out and put Eddie up there for me.
